The U.N. nuclear watchdog chief warned in comments aired Saturday that any military strike on Iran could turn the Mideast to a "ball of fire" and lead Iran to a more aggressive stance on its controversial nuclear program.

Mohamed ElBaradei made the remarks in an interview aired on Saturday by Al Arabiya TV. The interview comes a day after reports emerged that Israel conducted an large-scale military exercise that the United States believes is in part a message to Iran that Israel has the capability to attack its nuclear program.

"In my opinion, a military strike will be the worst. ... It will turn the Middle East to a ball of fire," ElBaradei said on Al-Arabiya television. It also could prompt Iran to press even harder to seek a nuclear program and force him to resign, he said.

Iran also criticized the Israeli exercises Saturday. The official IRNA news agency quoted a government spokesman as saying the exercises demonstrate that Israel "jeopardizes global peace and security."

Israel sent warplanes and other aircraft on a major exercise in the eastern Mediterranean this month, U.S. military officials said Friday. Israel's military refused to confirm or deny that the maneuvers were practice for a strike in Iran, saying only that it regularly trains for various missions to counter threats to the country.

  • Iran has never threatened the US, nor do they currently pose any threat to the US. Attacking them is completely unnecessary and would do nothing to make the US safer. On the contrary, a preemptive strike on Iran would only serve to further destabilize the region and create even more enemies for the United States.

From the look of things, WWIII isn't too far off.

  • "..... nor do they currently pose any threat to the US."

With this I agree but I don't think the same can be said for Israel. Iran continues to fund and support Hamas and Hezbollah.

  • Israel is the threat to the world, not any other middle East country. Do you know what the genocide happening in Palestine? The lens of history can help clarify the seemingly insensate events that current dominate the political climate of the middle east.

One of the saddest things with this nuclear crisis is that it has completely overshadowed the human rights situation in Iran.

  • the Iranian president and the Iranian leader are two different people. the Iranian president has no authority over the military whatsoever. so ahmadinejad has NO AUTHORITY whatsoever of the Iranian military. the Iranian supreme leader on the other hand Ali Khamenei, is the head of the military and he gets to decide if Iran attacks or not. not ahmadinejad. when Ali Khamenei changes his rhetoric to war then and only then should you be afraid that Iran will attack.

  • Shhhhh!!!!!!!!!! Don't give those neocons another reason to want to attack iran!!! -- the idea of turning the Middle East into a fireball gives them all orgasms -- we mustn't encourage them!!! lol

  • Everything ElBaradei says here is straightforward and obvious - he seems pretty level-headed.

  • Why is this spinning so completely out of control? Stone is right about ahmadinejad not being able to start a war. Apparently we can use him as a reason for Israel to attack Iran so we can then protect Israel though. If the Iranians would just quietly get off our oil things would be fine. The trouble makers. The whole world is trying to stop this and we are cruising along totally unaware of what is happening.
  • Provide hard evidence that Iran is building a nuclear bomb before any action takes place. If you can't and only rely on talk you will be in trouble.

  • I can't think of one country who is in any moral position to dictate to another who can have a weapon in their house. No country should possess WMD. As long as the next man has weapons so will I. Mao once said "that out of the barrel of a gun comes political power"....I will never believe that BS about having a nuclear weapon as a deterrent. To what? Me having one too. All is fair in war. If their is ever a conflict with Iran....they will be on the defensive. It won't be a walk in the park for any so-called super power either. Iran can hold it's own, especially with friends like China and Russia.

  • This is absolutely asinine. Our military is stretched thin, moral is at an all time low, we have done some serious damage to our international policies and image, and these war mongers are still trying to blow something up. If they are attacked, it could be the trigger for a global conflict that no one will escape from. I can't understand what our so called leaders have in their heads that could possibly justify such an irrational course of action. We all need to be concerned about this one.

  • but you have to love the logic..

    WE HAVE BOMB.
    YOU HAVE NO BOMB.
YOU MIGHT ONE DAY HAVE THE ABILITY TO MAKE BOMB.
SO WE PUT YOU DOWN NOW.

now that i type it.. reminds me of that movie minority report..

i sympathize most with families of the american soldiers who will inevitably be duped into doing the zionists' dirtywork.. washington dc has whored itself out to execute israel's agenda at the high price of american lives..

  • For some the "worst case senarios" are as inevitable as gravity so they would totally agree that eliminating Iran "before" anything happens would be just like the example of catching a dropping ball before it hits the floor they used in the movie "Minority Report"

The trouble with that example is how far in advance "before" is justified? And how can you predict that other factors won't alter the prediction of it being "inevitable?"

  • I really hope it doesn't have to come to this.

  • Im starting to feel a little sympathy for Iran simply because they have come under attack by SPECULATION.........Bush has a "War" fetish. Its something he gets off on. Just think before 9-11 he had nothing to say.....Now everybody is a suspect......name em' Iran, Iraq, S. Korea, lets not forget about those countries with struggling so called domocracies. Get his ass outer here.

if we don't attack would be to speculate about an outcome....to attack has an obvious outcome. possibly world war III.

  • I'm a bit confused by the story, it says that "any military strike on Iran could turn the Mideast to a "ball of fire" and lead Iran to a more aggressive stance on its controversial nuclear program". A strike on Iran would put Iran and whoever strikes them at war wouldn't it? It seems that Iran would be more concerned with fighting the war then to start a more aggressive stance on it's nuclear program. Is this supposed to say that Iran will take a more aggressive stance on it's nuclear program if more military exercises take place?

  • they do pose a great threat to the american empire,israel included,but a nuclear threat??gimme a break.

  • So Russia is building a nuclear plant for Iran. All while they sit on some of the largest natural gas reserves in the world. And Russia is going to transport the waste back to Russia.

How retarded is that thought process?

Now they claim they need 18 more power plants.
As if natural gas can't power an electric plant.

  • Well since DICK could nt get his oil from Iraq, he needs to make more from the American taxpayer.
He can do this by destroying and then pretending to rebuild countries. Now he has the People so frightened by high fuel prices that he can demand anything. His puppet is happy to oblige in every respect. By the way, GWB gives C- students a bad name. It isn't just that he can't speak, It is he is so stupid he can't read a prompter.
