Only three survivors have been found after a ferry with more than 700 people onboard capsized near the central Philippine island of Sibuyan.

The boat capsized before a rescue vessel could reach it. Four bodies have been found floating in the waters.

The crew of the MV Princess of Stars reported Saturday that it ran aground after its engine failed during its regular run between Manila and Cebu City.

Radio contact with the ship was lost Saturday afternoon, and rough seas stirred up by Typhoon Fengshen have slowed efforts to reach the ferry. The typhoon made landfall in the eastern Philippines early Saturday.

The typhoon battered the islands this weekend causing flash-flooding and forcing thousands out of their homes.

This website predicts it'll move toward Taiwan on Sunday: www.tropicalstormrisk.com.

Small ferries were prevented from leaving ports for a time. I guess people thought this ferry was sturdy enough to continue its regular timetable.

I hope rescuers recover the bodies quickly - how terrible for the families waiting for news.

One of the few survivors has said, "There was just one announcement over the megaphone, about 30 minutes before the ship tilted to its side." Check out the link for the latest on this tragedy.

What a horrible set of circumstances...a course set ..and climatic changes placed the typhoon on the ferry's path...

Diesel engines are very reliable....I am a captain...if a storm...with its waves ..chokes up its engine ...it is very likely the sludge in the diesel tank will get sucked up into the venturis. Then the engine chokes and there is nothing you can do to start the engine. Sludge and algea is a normal accumulation in a diesel tank. Tanks need to be purged on a regular basis...there are specially designed purging agents made for that.

This very event happened to me....I was sailing in waves and the engine choked...I nearly had a collision with an oncoming vessel. Luck was our only saviour.....our tanks had a TWO stage filtering system ! Yet the sludge dominated both filters...Many factors affect sludge... of course the quality of the diesel... but also ...condensation, heat and growth...maintenance of filters...where the tanks are positionned and the design of the boat...and many more factors.

The normal human response is to try to find the 'one' culprit. but I do not think this is a 'one person' blame...it is ..as it is most often ...a 'set' of unfortunate circumstances.

I am a Canadian with ties in the Phills. When I heard the news, of this boat that I had seen so many times before, I felt the desperate and horrorfying emotion they must have lived.
