The rise of hate

I know I talk a lot about race and the irrelevance of the concept, but I think it is important, while we discuss the possibilities of having the first non white dude in the Big Chair, that we still have a lot of people who do not want to see this happen simply because his skin contains a bit more melanin. Racists and supremacists exist in the dark crevices of our society. I think now, when American culture is the state of flux and old-world rule systems and beliefs are being challenged and broken down, we need to shine a light on the ugly history of our country and put in the blood sweat and tears to make sure the world knows hate, bigotry and racism will not be the legacy of our country. I know it's ugly and a lot of people don't want to read or even believe this type of ugliness exists for that matter, but untreated wounds will only get worse. We need to deal with this now.

  • I say stay out of the churches, don't walk alone, and move to the city. It's gonna get ugly.

  • The whole world has race problems. America is nothing but part of the world.

  • Yes, I am sure that a few folks won't vote for Obama because he is black. But I find it disgusting that some want to throw the rest of us who are not black, under the bus because they think we are racist.

I think it would be very unwise to point a finger.

I say, before you point the finger, look in the mirror..
you might be the racist one, not the person you are pointing to.

Most folks would not talk about their Grandmothers as
a "Typical White Woman" especially someone who is of mixed heritage whose Grandmother raised him.

To me, that statment, written (and NOT thought about by anyone on Obama's staff) is one of the most unkind, cruel and racist statements I have ever read or heard of.
  • Problem is that liberals have already pre-determined that anyone NOT supporting obama is doing so b/c they are a racist. It's too complicated for them to understand how anyone could dislike him based on his ideological stances so they press the easy button and start screaming the "R" word. I personally could give 2 shits less what color obamas skin color is, hell depending on the audience he changes which part of his heritage that he plays to anyway. His policies, voting record, and lack of experience disqualify him from getting any support from me.
  • It's just like people who go OMG he's going to be the FIRST Black President...CHEER it up....

If it doesn't matter, it doesn't matter no matter the side you stand on.

  • Another good article AreOh, It is disturbing how racially split this nation was(and to a point still is). I'm a Caucasian and I've never understood why others have an issue with someone who has a different level of melanin. The irony is that we all came from the same primordial "soup". Prejudice is a problem, and it's one we'll all have to deal with.

  • you cant change some things in this world racisim is one of them no matter how hard we try there will always be some kind of hate or malice
  • i'm not sure if the spike on neo-nazi websites are due to the next presidential candidate. it could also be that visits to these sites are due to factors other than interest in joining.

interest in white supremacy information might also be caused by the recognition of award winning work by Current's own Christof Putzel and the Vanguard Journalism team this past May. the irony.

  • We really need to come together as one and refuse to let racism exist ......but i do also believe that we should learn our history and know what happened so we can heal as nation...I dont believe in saying "get over it" or ignoring..or pushing it aside like it never happened.... i mean there is nothing to feel guilty about..and i dont blame anyone for what happened in history.. no one was there... but i do have a problem with people thinking that it somehow doesn't affect life today...Knowledge is power!!

  • Racism is fact. We need to live with it.
It's going to get rough out there, this race has brought out the ugliest in a lot of people, a lot of deep seeded racism that went undetected all these years. I don't know why people are surprised as to what many knew about for years.

  • Hate predominately stems from religious beliefs that are ingrained so deeply as to prevent any form of rational objectivity and empathy.

  • Race shoud not be part of the issue. Honesty, intelligence, and the ability to put the people of the United States first and formost are the qualities we should look for. Mr. Bush has spent the last eight years putting the special intrests and Iraq before We the people.

  • This article is titled "The rise of hate," but I feel like it would be better titled "The search for hate." Has there really been a rise? What recent events point to a influx of haters?

Maybe because I live in LA in a mixed marriage, I just don't see it. I'm also not looking for it.

To combat hate, we must love. Not point out, reprimand, or condemn.

If I disagree with someone's view, I believe this issue is served best by accepting and not judging their opinion. By accepting their view, I can only hope they will accept mine. And, in turn, they may eventually have a more open mind to the situation and see the truth.

  • It's really easy to distinguish people who hate because of race from those who don't. Some people are more upfront about it. These people are generally lacking in intelligence and are verifiebly crazy. However there are others that mask their racsim. That is usually people who benefit people of their own color and societal commonality and deny people who differ in the color of their skin. Then, there are others who literally mask themselves. I see them as one in the same, but the masked ones' outwardly seem more dangerous.

  • akira- did you read the article attached...then maybe you would understand the title of the article....
    but i digress....
the people in the article are just the people that the washington post spoke with...so for them to say what their numbers are one would think that they could be exaggerated on either side....what is scary s that many people are choosing racial sides as they did in the fifties and sixties...what i find bleak is enormous amount of hate on both sides of the plate

  • Kinda all boils to one thing. There will always be a segment out there that will find something about the other person that they don't like. If you search enough you can always find ways that we are different. It's a little more difficult but if we take the time we will find those small ways that we can connect. Do this enough times and watch your blood pressure drop.

  • Thank you AkiraChevelle.

It's really, really easy for some folks to jump all over someone just because they don't have a prevailing opinion.
  • "Nothing has awakened normally complacent white Americans more than the prospect of America having an overtly nonwhite president."

I hope this kind of idiocy doesn't lead to anyone's death.

  • Very enlightened. Encouraging actually.

  • maybe white people are worried that a black president will favor people of color because they feel like white presidents favored white citizens...

    ...who knows?

  • I continue to be baffeld by people who hate so much over race. They love to spout on and on about how "blacks and latinos" are taking jobs and bringing crime to America. The economy is not in the slump because of immigrants and "blacks". The economy and perils of our "homeland" are due to a massive unstoppable force. That force is a corporate and political structure which favors poor performance and greed. Who leads this structure???? Rich white men who don't do thier jobs. Obama, if elected would do more for these people who are disgruntled than any rich white republican would ever dream of. Yet they want to string him up in tree. Where is the common sense or logic in this? There is also something to be said about a group of men who claim to want a unified white America yet would rape thier fellow white man in prison. Think about it. If you live acoording to hate it is possible to hate anyone. Time for some new thinking folks.
And by the way, I am in no way affiliated with the Obama campaign. Just one white man who wants to learn from our past and move forward without blaming others for my problems.

  • If something like 95% of african american voters support Obama does that make them racist?

Because if 95% of white voters voted mccain, most of you would blow this site up about how racist people still are...

can't have your cake and eat it too folks.

  • Don’t these birdbrains know Halloween is over? Plus, they must get pretty warm during their so-called “Christian cross lighting ceremonies” & what about the ash and soot problem of keeping their whites so white? I can’t believe I’m wasting time on these pinheads. It’s truly unbelievable that these organizations continue to justify their preaching of hatred, ignorance & separation while teaching this MENTALity to the next generation. Hopefully the shrinking number of these numb nuts will inbreed themselves into extinction & leave the dispelling of ignorance & cleansing of evil to those who are not. I try to remind myself that certain less evolved individuals & groups of people will hopefully, someday reach a higher levels of awareness by any means necessary in order to build a stronger more unified nation at a time when the world truly needs to stick together, compromise & use their energy to resolve looming global issues.

  • anyways racism is a part of our society and the world, but to bring it up everytime someone of color is trying to get something accomplished is a sign of digression not progression. How about the character of the person or the judgments they have made?

Why always first black this or first black that????

  • If you have any fascists/supremacists in your neighborhood and you have concrete evidence of it, organize a public fascist outing so that the whole community can see these snakes in the grass.

  • I am not sure about all of this..
I want things to get better, not worse. We need to put race and religeon behind us.
  • Little difference. Major indifference.

I will be alot of fun to watch everyone try to avoid saying something that could, maybe, sound a bit on the racist side on the news.

I SAY!!! Let it fly Barrac Hussein Obama is a black man. big deal

He is also Dick Cheney's 8th cousin. big deal

He had some Islamic education at around 6 to 10 years old. big deal

Vote for the dem. party if you like their policy; he will have to fall inline if he wants to survive the political malestrom that is Washington.

  • Race is still an issue today, due to the fact that it is deeply embedded in American culture. Racism lives within the United States so called Democractic Capitalist society and its not going anywhere, because White Males rule this country. Even if Obama would become president he wouldn't be running anything, or even make the "change" he is preaching. The United States is run by big businesses and C.E.O's, and the people of those groups are White males. In order for there to be any change that anybody is speaking of, their needs to be a change of the system. One can't just repairing a system that has a multiple broken pieces over and over and over again. The United States is like a completely thrased engine. It's been running for quite some time and it has already had its prime; however, now its starting to fall apart and detiorate due to over use. When an engine starts to habitually malfunction over and over again, do you keep spending more and more money to fix it? Or do you by a new one?

I suggest that the U.S. gets a new engine. All of the problems going on just in the country alone are ridiculous. The U.S. is just as divided as any "developing country" that we say are barbarian. The U.S. is barbarian, and slowy, but surely we are killing ourselves from the inside out with all of this ideals such as: racisim, discrimination, capitalistic globalization, etc. The United States is going to have to change the entire system to make any change because the system now is beyond malfunctioning.

  • I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but racism is here. It comes in the form of different color, different beliefs, different ways of dress.
Its worst form is religious racism.
Racism isn't indigenous to the US and I can't figure out why people blast the US the way they do, it's everywhere that human's inhabit.
It is going to take many generations to eradicate racism, if it can be eradicated.

  • here it is!!!! you lefties you will not win the election w/o us blue collar whites.keep up bringing up the past. obama will lose in alandside if you lefties keep bringing this shit up

  • Slavery built this country. We had slavery almost 50 years after most of the world outlawed it, and it gave us an economic boost that most countries still fail to surpass. I'm not saying that it was a good thing, but it made us a super power in such little time. A wise man is even tolerant of intolerance.
  • CSMONUT..You are correct. Racism is not indigenous to the United States. And this country should be more than blasted for it since these so-called leaders and most of Americans think we are in such a good moral position to police the whole damn world, deciding who gets fed and who doesn't, who can have a weapon and who can't, people who are suppose to have high standards for living, yet you can walk down any street in any major city and step over homeless and hungry people. That's not even civilized. The U.S. should be blasted.......a paradigm of what? Try Tahiti....there's a start for unbiased living and relaxation!

  • A bigot is a person consumed by fear.

The people who would control us are the people who will attempt to create a situation where people of different races (or anything different) will be caused to violently exhibit the fear that consumes them.

Everyone is fearful of something. But the people who would control us as a culture will use fear of the unknown to keep our people divided and therefore conquered.
