Stuart Hill, sole owner and resident of a 2.5 acre island off Scotland, declared his independence from the UK this weekend, saying he wanted the territory to be a crown dependency like the Channel Islands.
He named the island Forvik in honour of the Shetland's Scandinavian past.

Very cool. I would definitely do that if I owned my own island. The coolest part of declaring your own islands independence is that you get to select your title as leader. Sorry, but I can't think of any good ones at the moment.

Does that essentially mean that he can do what the *&£$ he likes on the island? What an amazing place for an all out festival - 'yeah go on boys do what you like, I'm the only police 'round ere.'
Awesome! -
Its a bit more complex than that:
Citizens can benefit from Forvik's status in two ways:
There will be a land-owning citizenry (initially only open to Shetland residents) - 8000 plots will be available to buy at a cost of 2 Forvik Gulden. Land-owning citizens will form a 'Ting', or parliament. They are entitled to vote and participate in the island's unique open direct democracy system, deciding how the income of Forvik is to be used. The Ting will decide how the island's income is spent and what projects are undertaken - how much is spent on capital projects, on promotion, a fighting fund, or distributed as profit to the citizens, etc. The size of each plot does not allow for any building to be erected. It is simply a symbolic means of being a landowner on the island.
People from other parts of the world can become honorary Forvik citizens at a cost of 1 Forvik Gulde. Honorary citizens support the ideals and aspirations of Forvik and are entitled to a share in the distribution of profits as decided by The Ting.
Prices:
Landowning citizenship: 2 Forvik Gulden
Honorary citizenship: 1 Forvik Gulde
The Gulde is a gold-backed real currency. 1 Gulde is about £60 sterling. There are 100 groats in a Gulde. One groat is about £12.-

You missed the bit about him applying for planning permission. Why he'd need to as sovereign of his own state is beyond me.

I am inspired.
The Conch Republic was founded on the same concepts. Of course, the USA federal government was not amused and crushed the rebellion. Conchs forever! -
This story reminds me of Sealand - a sea fort that was declared an independent sovereign state by the family living there based on an ancient loophole in the law.
Despite the fact that no UN nation recognises it as a sovereign state, they've still made their own passports and royal family and fought out invasions. -
i wan to visit, sounds like a cool guy.

i'm moving there
