A top adviser to John McCain said another terrorist attack on U.S. soil would be a "big advantage" for the Republican presidential candidate.
Charlie Black, already in the spotlight for his past lobbying work, is quoted in the upcoming July 7 edition of Fortune magazine as saying such an attack "certainly would be a big advantage to him." Black said Monday he regretted the comment.
Black is also quoted as saying the "unfortunate event" of the assassination of former Pakistani leader Benazir Bhutto in December 2007 "helped us."
The remarks caught McCain flat-footed on a day when he focused on energy issues — first in a speech, then at a town-hall meeting and then during a news conference as he stood beside two $100,000 electric cars. McCain offered $300 million to anyone who develops a revolutionary automobile battery, and he predicted such incentives would lower alternative energy costs.
Moments later, he was befuddled when reporters asked about Black's comments. Black was similarly surprised when reporters happened upon him outside a later McCain fund raiser.
Speaking quietly, Black read from handwritten notes. "I deeply regret the comments. They were inappropriate. I recognize that John McCain has devoted his entire adult life to protecting his country and placing its security before every other consideration," Black said.

You are both right. That statement about sums up the Republican philosophy of fear and war mongering.
-
This comment should be taken more seriously. If we look back at 2000 elections, bush advisors made similiar statements just prior to 9/11. If mccain has someone in his ear advisoring and then slips up with a private thought spoken publicly, we now should be on guard for the next 9/11 event.
My feelings are that impeachment would be the only way to deter another republican attack on American soil. mccain's awareness of present day events is lacking in substance, 71 years old, is more likely to have sinility and alhzeimer disease. -
They couldn't hardly do ANYTHING else to remind me more of the Bush administration...
Bush's THIRD term, McCain!! -
Classic! This is how Americans would really react to an attack.

such foolish comments!

Dumbass thing to say but it is the truth. Some things are better left un said ESPECIALLY if you're too much of a pussy to defend what you say afterwards, this "oops I crapped my mouth politically correct dance" from politicians and their representatives is getting old. Who in their right mind would trust obama to handle anything relating to an attack retaliation? I'm sure he'd be ready to don his middle eastern garb and set up a nice friendly meeting.

And the most messed up thing about this comment is that he's right

Well, if you're desperately hoping that terrorists will attack the US in order to freak everyone out so you can win the election and get into power -- the least you can do is to publicly announce your desire and, basically, invite them to please attack soon... [irol]

John McCain is dedicated to preventing further attacks against America.
-
Just another Reason to vote for Barack.
-
President Bush may indeed work that out for John McCain if he thinks Obama will win.
-
Since much of the present administration has read like a script for "Wag the Dog", there are many who believe the timing of an attack should be completely unambiguous to most. It's not surprising these are common sentiments among influential Republicans, but rather any of them would admit to it publicly.
As much as the international community's intelligence has been insulted over the years with lies and deceit, there are still certain Republicans corrupted by relatively unchecked political power that are completely comfortable with such flawed ethical standards. Like every other scandal, it may take a considerable amount of time, but history one day will reveal just how deluded as a nation we were. -
Ok, let's say the same thing but use different words.
"I am working for the McCain campaign. Therefore, I hope he wins. A terrorist attack that kills Americans would benefit us. Therefore, I hope it happens."
Isn't that essentially what he's saying? Was this a broadcast request? What an a-hole.
Why would anyone vote for Repugnantcons anyway? They haven't made us any safer since 9/11 happened on their watch. -
The strong implication about this story is that Senator John McCain want a terrorist attack against the United States of America to occur so he can become President. This is the farthest thing from the truth. Senators Obama and Mcain want what is best for this Country. We as voters have to decide which candidate is the best person to serve as out Chief Executive. I have a strong suspicion that this person was quoted way out of context.
-
Charlie Black is not just an ass hole...he is now thee entire ass.
-
Just goes to show how stupid people are. Our risk for a terrorist attack has significantly increased BECAUSE of the Bush administration and it's war based upon lies. But yes, Americans WOULD be more likely to re-elect a republican for president following a terrorist attack. It's sickening.
-
Does McCain's own party NOT want him to win? Republicans are like parasites...they take something healthy (America) and suck it dry for their own personal gain while harming the host (911, war on terror, higher oil-per-barrel prices, more money into the pockets of the elite and less for the people they're SUPPOSED TO SERVE). I belive that McCain, secretly, also wants there to be another terrorist attack on America so he'll have something "good" to harp on.
-
Liberal_Extinction,
You make perfect sense. The guy made a dumbass comment. If the terrorist attack the United States there will be some people who will again blame our own Government, instead of the terrorists who carried out the attacks against us. -
and yet ensuring the safety of American people and promising to rebuild your relationships with foreign nations wouldn't be an advantage. oh i see.

I hope the rest of the world recognizes the revolutionary change we are ensuing upon should Obama become president. Hate for the U.S. is deeply rooted world wide but I trust in Obamas ability to ease that hate by opening lines of communication, and truly and honestly taking full responsibility of his position representing the United States. Running a presidency on peoples fears and insecurities paired with an elitist world view is seeing the last of its days.
OBAMA '08! -
Goes to show you how low republicans will stoop to win the white house even at the expense of American lives. Who are the real terrorists now??

This guys ignorant claim is not without a very present fact: This happened in 2001 in NY.
-
this is a hilariously dark example of how disconnected politicians (particularly political advisers and annalists) are from actual voters. although i've heard worse from the media!

some people need to think more and speak less. The current administration got by by projecting and instilling fear and terror on the collective American psyche why would the McCain front do any different. the McCain campaign is desperate, the Obama movement got them shaking in their boots.

Irresponsable words, from a irresponsable person that shouldnt be allowed to be close to any type of government.
-
madness
-
based on the comments, you can obviously see what kind of man he is. He is a politician who cares about personal gain and doesn't care at all about his country. Who honestly says things like, a terrorist attack is an advantage?? Seriously.

Obama 08'

a name like liberal_extinction says it all. Their are certain things people DO NOT say. To put the words "Terrorist Attack" next to "Big Advantage" = Very very bad choice of words. And if people are going to attack Michelle Obama so fiercely on what she said. I'm thinking saying something like this deserves to be criticized. No one is suggesting they WANT a terrorist attack. Or are responsible for a terrorist attack and to draw that conclusion out of the few words I gave you, makes you a very talented idiot. You have to question someone's character when they say words like that. Those are some pretty strong words to just have slip out. If you are going to cry over this comment however, I do have a box of tissue for you.
-
This is shameful. To even suggest such a thing directly points to the character of whoever said, yet, again, I see people making excuses for war mongers yet again. And then it is such a big mystery why so many citizens have lost faith in our decision makers. Yet another example of the typical double standard view point that the ignorant and cowardly cling to.

Yesterday, John McCain quickly disavowed adviser Charlie Black's remarks to Fortune Magazine that a terrorist attack on the United States would be a "big advantage" for McCain.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Despite his disagreement with Black's comments, McCain has made similar remarks in the past.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
On the campaign trail in October 2004, McCain responded to concerns that a recently-released tape from Osama bin Laden would impact the election:
-------------------------------------------------------------------
"I think it's very helpful to President Bush," said McCain, R-Ariz., while stumping in Stamford for U.S. Rep. Christopher Shays. "It focuses America's attention on the war on terrorism. I'm not sure if it was intentional or not, but I think it does have an effect." -
I do not understand why this story is not picked for the news. It has had more views than any story on the homepage all day and has way more comments.
what gives? -
Disgusting!
I guess this means that we can plan to see another attack, and I'm sure as hell that the republicans will be behind it ... again!-
