Changing your lifestyle can change your genes

Here's some very good news: your genes are not your destiny. Newsweek reports on new research showing that improved diet, meditation and other non-medical interventions can actually "turn off" the disease-promoting process in men with prostate cancer.

The changes included a plant-based diet (predominant fruits, vegetables, legumes, soy products, and whole grains low in refined carbohydrates), moderate exercise (walking 30 minutes per day), stress management techniques (yoga-based stretching, breathing techniques, meditation, and guided imagery for one hour per day), and participating in a weekly one-hour support group.

  • I think they are right. Eating right and living in a clean environment certainly help change things for the better.

  • This is encouraging since cancer runs rampant throughout my family. I am doing my best to fight the history with a good diet of fruit and veggies.

Just wish I could give up my coffee. Speaking of which.. Fresh pot is ready. ;-)

  • Just had my second cup, had to take my niece to the Airport to catch a flight at 5am ugghhh

I hate getting up this early, I wanted to stay in bed and dream lucidly. Well I am living proof that what this information says is true. I have had HIV now for almost 30 years and I almost died in 1996. Since then I have completely turned everything around and I am a vital and healthy person, with the exception of my side effects form medications.

It is truly amazing what can happen and in such a short time. I am so grateful to have been shown the way to better health through diet. Now if I could just cut out the last little bit of refined sugar I still consume by way of morning coffee. I tried the agave thing, but it is much more expensive than sugar. I love it, but I am also trying to save money too. It's a struggle.

  • Anyone looking for a healthy alternative to Coffee should check out Yerba Mate. This is a popular drink in Argentina, Brazil, and many other South American countries.

It's rich in vitamins and nutrients and is a much cleaner energy than coffee. you can buy it online
  • This is an interesting topic, as we all crave nitriments to feed our body, but suffer the same delemas of people 100 years ago. Yes we will live longer if we take better care of our (inside Bodies) so vitamins are so important. I recommend a liquid vitamin called passion4life, which can be found on passion4life.com. Feed the body and thrive. Thank you

  • If people stop gorging on the "Western Diet", then they can avoid getting (and dying from) the "Western Diseases".

An interesting book on this topic that I just finished reading is "In Defense of Food" by Michael Pollan.

  • This is good news! Solid proof that genes do not determine one's destiny. The environment affects what genes get switched on in the body and what gets turned off. It's been proven in worms and lab rats. Why not humans?
  • Well, recently there was a post which said that meditation enlarges your brain,

then another one that homosexuals and lesbians had different size brains so it it is a proof that people are born gays

now this post says that we can change our genes based on our lifestyle.

    Hm...Hmmmm.

    Food for thought

  • That the environment interacts more with genes than any one previously have thought? Or did you not read the article?
