Hindu priests pray to monkey god for Obama victory

NEW DELHI - A dozen priests chanted around a sacred fire in New Delhi on Tuesday as a group of Indians offered prayers to the Hindu monkey god Hanuman asking him to grant U.S. presidential hopeful Barack Obama an election victory in November.

Several dozen people took part in the ceremony held at a Hanuman temple. Many said they believed an Obama victory would bring positive change to the world.

    That's a pretty surreal thought. I know the US elections have got massive global attention, but I'd never imagined that a bunch of Hindus would be praying for the next US president.

    That's globalisation right there.

  • Huh, India is one of the few countries where McCain is pretty popular because of his support of a nuclear deal. I'm sure once Obama is more popular amongst the average person, though.

    I just worry about how disappointed people will be around the world when Obama isn't quite as good as they expected. Maybe compared to Bush they won't notice.

    Nice story, in any case. Maybe I'll pray to Dionysus in November for Obama, but I probably will stick to canvassing and the like.

  • oh great...first the "low information voter" insisted Obama was Muslim. Now they will accuse him of being Hindu. If you told them he kept a herd of flying pigs, they would believe you and find something un-American about it.

Further, to this day, Hanuman is invoked in any fight against sorcery, and amulets and charms depicting him are therefore extremely popular among devotees.

    Hanuman.. because he is accepted widel in india as the protecteor of the everage human being..... and he is supposed to be one of the biggest "links" to the more powerful gods
