Like A Local reflects the desire for a new group of upwardly mobile, young, hip travelers to get a different experience when visiting new cities. Rather than offer the typical cheesy, tour bus experience, Like A Local (started by three young Dutch girls two years ago) hooks clients up with cool, young knowledgeable locals in any of the cities they service (there are about 20 now, NYC, London, Barcelona, Amsterdam, etc). Basically, you can log on to the site and within minutes you can literally line up and RENT a local to hang out with in a given city. Our pod follows Maru and Dirk, a young couple who live in the Gracia district of Barcelona as they host a young Milwaukee couple who wants to see a cooler side of Barcelona.

  • this is a pretty rad resource, soskin. i, personally, want to eat at saskia's restaurant, as fetured in your shot of the website. impostor!

  • I dont think i would like this program. I would much rather do my own exploration, there is much better ways in my opinion to look non-touristy and have fun then playing follow the leader.

If i would go to any of the cities they offered i would give it a try, but i am bit skeptical of the idea.

  • I enjoyed the video and the idea.
I would try the Like A Local service. I am not in the market for it now but perhaps in the future.

i'm spending my summer in ny right now and all of my family is busy so i can't get around. it would be great to find local clubs and things to do since i don't like tourists attractions.

  • like a local is awesome! after my foreign semester i always make a point to stay in cities where i have friends because they give the best tours. how smart for a company to capitalize one that! wish i thought of it!

  • I think this is truly awesome! Im finally at a point in my life where I can start traveling and Im definitely all about seeing a town thru the eyes of a local. My bf is lucky since he gets sent all over the world for work and when he gets to those cities the company has local employees that show him around. Im heading to Japan this fall...I wish this program existed there!

I hope they set one up for San Francisco soon! I know tons of people (myself included) who would love to participate in this!

  • Still, it's hard to beat the experiences and free opportunities offered through CouchSurfing. From what I can tell, you can get all the same services that Like A Local provides for no cost via CS-- and it feels much more like a true community of travelers, hosts, and friends rather than a business.

  • This sounds awesome! It's exactly what a lot of people are looking for nowadays when travelling - not to be bunched up with a crowd of other people who are just like you viewing someone else's world from behind a sheet of glass, like some sort of exhibit!
It's so much more refreshing and eye-opening and fun to get to know a place that is so different and yet so similar compared to where you live. If I travelled more I would definitely be up to this.

  • Another site that offers similar services, however couchsurfing has many homes to say at and it is a person by person basis, almost like a dating service...but instead of dating your chilling at their place :)
oh and many 'Couches' are FREE.

  • Great pod man. Surprisingly I have never heard of the site before.

Also, I see that your boys just won the Euro Final. Congrats!

  • This was great, I hate looking like a tourist. I am always in awe of monuments and good architecture but I hate being another gawking tourist. Great Idea!

  • Whenever I travel, I try to see things from a local's perspective. This will be helpful.
