Time for a grand inquest into Bush's high crimes

One of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's first acts upon taking the gavel was to rule impeachment off the table. She wanted Democrats to focus on challenging the president on the war and on kitchen table concerns -- from energy to education to health care. With Democrats now enjoying an increasing margin in generic polls and looking towards gaining seats in both the House and the Senate, the strategy certainly hasn't hurt politically.

But the constitutional implications are far more disturbing. This was dramatized as the Congress debated the FISA reform legislation that will provide retroactive immunity to the telecommunications companies for warrantless interception of the conversations of Americans -- and by implication, retroactive acceptance of the president's authority to order such wiretaps.

We have witnessed a staggering abuse of power by this president. Even former Bush Justice Department officials now charge President Bush with trampling the Constitution. Bush has claimed the prerogative to declare an endless war without congressional approval, to designate someone an enemy without cause, to proceed to wiretap them without warrant, arrest or kidnap them at will, jail them without a hearing, hold them indefinitely, interrogate them intensively (read torture), bring them to trial outside the US court system. He claims that executive privilege exempts his aides -- even the aides of his aides and his vice president's aides -- from congressional investigation. He claims the right to amend or negate congressional laws with a statement upon signing them. And much more.

Even this Supreme Court, stacked with activist right-wing judges enamored of executive national security powers, has rebuked the president on some of these claims, particularly around the treatment of allegedly enemy combatants. But many of Bush's claims will escape judicial determination.

  • Sounds like He has alot to cover up,but the new administration will open up the curtains of the White House and shed some light in the dark areas of this administration.

  • Oh hell, wouldn't it be a national catharsis and soul-cleansing to "interrogate them intensively"?

  • Its a laugh that any American citizen is so out of the loop of comprehending the corporate and upper class control of our government, that they might expect Congress to do anything to stop Bushit form acting like a dictator. After all he is a dictator and he was put there by the upper class as their servant.

The one percent can whimper and cry as they might. Nothing, I repeat, nothing will happen. Get use to it. The rest of fat stupid lazy scared America will go on tailgating at NFL games and thinking small and real personal.

The total collapse of the American economic house of credit cards is close at hand. If you think you see a lot of For Sale signs in front of houses in your neighborhood, you ain't seen nothing yet. Don't worry too much until you begin to see For Sale signs beginning to appear in front of your local banks. Then you can start to be really scared.

  • Pelosi's move to take impeachment off the table has nothing to do with keeping the focus on kitchen table concerns. That's a joke. All they had to do was vote and another portion of government takes responsibility for the investigation and prosecution.

Speaking of kitchen table concerns. How is our energy crisis doing? How is the Iraq war going? How is Healthcare improving? Give me a break.

    Excerpt:

"For if Pelosi's sensible political judgment results, as it has to date, in a show of congressional "inertia, indifference or quiescence," the Democratic majority in Congress may have gained a dozen seats at the cost of relinquishing its own powers, and putting the rights of Americans at risk."

Well duh. In comes the overall agenda. Rights gone. Seats filled. Obama in office with more power than ever.

This article shows the obvious lack of common sense, balls, and shows the real agenda to protect large corporate efforts, to kill the middle class, and dumb down citizens in the process.

For those of you waiting until the Obama administration takes office to prosecute these criminals, you're friggen dreaming.

Power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely. Obama is far from the angel he is presented to be. He isn't going to turn over the executive orders that Bush has in place. This is a mess that isn't going to get fixed by legislation or politics. I just hope the bow breaks soon and the cradle falls. Otherwise we are truly....
  • The agenda has been the same for some time. A select elitist class of the "new world order" has raised a military nation that looks to its big government for all things. Generations of citizens have bought into the economic philosophy of fiat (worthless) currency and a debt based lifestyle, where even children are awarded credit cards (I received my first card at 15. I'm sure many of you have similar stories). Essentially enslaving the working class. Democrat elitist or Republican elitist is still an elitist and loyal to the elitist agenda.

A new government IS coming. We are almost there. Just a few more rights left to give away. Bankrupt the economy, monopolize the agriculture industry (GMO seeds), threaten public safety and pull the energy rug this nation has built its infrastructure on and the sheeple will acquiesce to whatever government has the best marketing campaign.

  • "For those of you waiting until the Obama administration takes office to prosecute these criminals, you're friggen dreaming. "

I have yet to see Obama take a principled stand on any controversial issue. He caved on FISA and is appearing more and more gutless by the day.

  • "Her lack of judgement will be her greatest failure....."

Pelosi's problem is not lack of judgement, it is lack of courage. Sometimes, one must choose to do what is right simply because it is right. Expediency may be a virtue at times but it is no substitute for guts.

  • There are elements of truth in what most or all of you have said.

Pelosi is a smart woman, but one can't overlook the price of complacency. I suppose it depends on what's at stake - and the quality of the individual's judgment deciding.

Have Pelosi, Feinstein and others been complicit? That's a serious question we will have to address just as seriously.
