While more Americans are seeking new transportation technology that is clean, green and electric, this new category could result in a five- to ten-fold increase of affordable (under $20K) zero-emission vehicles being driven on our nation's roads today.
Modern Electric Vehicles capable of going 35 to 40 miles per hour are currently available for sale, yet they are limited by Federal low speed vehicle (LSV) regulations to 25 miles per hour. People driving in Montana and Washington have modified these zero-emission vehicles to travel at 35 miles per hour under new state laws that permit a faster speed. That speed is opening up the market in those states as people find the new speed works for local trips and their second car uses.
As a recognized business offering consumers the option of driving 100% electric cars, EnVironmental Motors has become the lead sponsor to help formulate a new Medium Speed Electric Vehicle (MSEV) classification. As part of a joint effort with The MSEV Coalition consisting of at least eleven Electric Vehicle manufacturers and numerous advocates, the group recently submitted letters of request to The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for rulemaking review.
These same vehicles are available throughout America, although our federal law has not been updated to reflect the latest innovations in transportation technology. Many customers are happy to have this choice available to them for all their local driving, as the actual energy costs are about 2-3 cents per mile.
Per Santa Monica Fleet Superintendent Rick Sikes, "We could replace more than 10% of our fleet with MSEVs, limited to 35 mph, without a decrease in service or operator acceptance."
EnVironmental Motors sells the ZENN luxury Neighborhood Electric Vehicle (NEV) which comes equipped with a solid aluminum alloy frame used for highway cars in Europe, along with a robust AC drive motor, heater and option for air conditioning. The ZENN is one of several cars that can satisfy the need for a zero emission 35mph second car right away - once the Federal Government removes the legal obstacles.
This is the natural progression for electric vehicles from golf carts at 15 mph to NEVs at 25 to around town cars at 35 mph. This would be easiest, fastest and most affordable way to get zero emissions vehicle on our streets says Russell Sydney, Coordinator for the Coalition.
To join the efforts and support the greening of our city streets, or for more information about the Medium Speed Electric Vehicle Coalition, call 310.450.7419 or email: Main@sustainableclub.org. For anyone who would like to learn more or enjoy a truly ZENN experience (the name ZENN is an acronym for Zero Emission No Noise), visit www.EnVironmentalMotors.com or contact EnVironmental Motors directly at 818.244.MYEV to schedule a test drive appointment.
PLEASE sign this and PASS IT ON. It's another step in the right direction, even if it was prompted by business.
Also, in other news, only 27% of Schiff's constituants are idiots!

I do not see why there is a limit, how dumb! Let us have electric cars!

the whole exterior of the car should be a solar panel.....there is a great awakening......it takes something like a shrinking billfold to really hit home.....can you imagine this world if electric cars had not been shot down in the early 20th century......and oil had not become God.......Golden Ruler.......Will.....

Electric cars have been here before, many people don't realize that they were taken off the road and destroyed. I highly recommend this 2006 documentary.

Question:
What is generally used to generate electricity in the US? Coal?
Pardon my ignorance.
If we are using coal to generate electricity, doesn't that make electric cars... well... not so green?
Solar powered cars are the way to go!
-
I agree iameam. my question is....what can be done with the infrastructure of coal plants that produce electricity. Afterall, there is a HEAVY investment in this infrastructure. How can it be reasonably changed to support solar powered cars?

With the new technologies out there, solar paint would not be a problem. They have solar cells now that are the thickness of paint and would not add any real weight to the car, which would make charging the batteries a breeze.

Go nuclear. Nuclear cars FTW!
Really, was there ever a reason given to limit electric car speed?
And why doesn't it apply to the Tesla Roadster, which is capable of 130mph?-

There are actually several ways that electricity is produced...by coal, not so good... by feul oil, not so good...by hydro-power (huge water driven turbines) a much better source...and now, wind-power, much better even...solar is good, also, and advancing in popularity, but solar cars seem to be a long way off, due to the low rate of efficiency. If more funds were spent on R&D, then we would probably already have solar cars, but tell that to 'Big Oil'...they and the auto industry are running the show...

Screw the low speed vehicles, why don't we focus on the problem with normal high speed electric cars.
I think the real limit is when car companies decide that environmentally conscience people like driving around ugly electric cars. If they're smart enough to make an electric car, the must have eyes; and realize how ugly their car is. -
um, if you read some of the OTHER links about this post, it seems that they're arguing for vehicles which might NOT have many kinds of "safety features" we're all familiar with, to be permitted to join "full-fledged cars" on roads at 35-45 mph.
it looks like the legislation they're trying to overturn or get a new classification set up for is really to allow a hopped-up electric golf cart to go play on public streets at 45 mph.
if you want an electric car and safety at the same time, signing THAT petition might not bring it to you.
read the fine print?
-
I think it is a great initiative! However, what about just building these cars to be affordable and to go 130 mpm and thus be compliant with most Hi-Way speed safety. Come on, these cars have already been built at $2,500 in Germany, Japan and India...What are we waiting for?

There's a limit on smart ideas? .... only in America.

Everyone needs to see 'Who killed the electric car?;. If you haven't please do. The technology is here and has been here.
I do not understand the limits either.

The people who want the US to stay a "Consumerist Culture" killed the electric car. We have to stop with the obsession over profits and save the world.

Yes, we need to do away with the pork and fund projects that improve the quality of our environment and existence in general, such as more electric cars... If our elected officials don't want to do what's right for 'we the people', then they need to hit the road...we'll vote for someone who will...
Making the cars aesthetically pleasing should be a no-brainer...

Good point Skyler. We see that "Consumerist Culture" being played out right here in this thread. We do not need a solar car. We need Solar power. The use of electric transportation is proven to work so there is no mystery there. Charge the transportation system ( cars, bus, trucks, trains, boats) with a solar/wind power grid. This too is proven to work. What is the hold up? Me and You. The consumer must step up and demand these changes. Waiting for a big corp car industry change is like waiting for your pockets to be picked again. The big corporation's concern is YOUR MONEY and YOUR MONEY alone. NOT your safety. NOT your image in your fancy car. NOT your fuel expenses. NOT your maintenance. JUST YOUR MONEY. What do you want? Do you want to cut those ties? Cosmo is right in the above post when he says "The fat hogs who control the auto industry in America must be sent to the packing house." It is You and I and Me and You and We who will send them packing.
-
What kind of stupid law is that, an electric vehicle speed can be limited.
-
maybe if politicians started investing in companies that profit from the manufacture and sale of electric cars.
-
Now if they'd just sell these cars in New Mexico... I'd love one.
-
Actually the earliest cars were battery electric, until the longer range gasoline cars took off in the market 100-110 years ago. Strange ehh...

It really depends on how the electricity is generated before I can comfortably back the proposal. Solar, wind, hydro & thermal trump coal, oil, hydrogen & certainly nuclear. Hopefully I can get more of a handle on biofuels because I still haven't figured out if the pros outweigh the "corns".

Recent studies have shown that the off peak electricity produced at power plants could charge several million electric cars with no increase in the power produced, at the moment off peak power is wasted, you cant just shut down a power plant when the electric demand is low.
The MSEV is a dumb idea entirely. I am currently building a full speed electric capable of driving on the freeway. All of the medium and low speed electrics simply encourage the population to think that electrics cant do the job of gasoline. They can and will.-
