Israel keeps Gaza crossings closed for second day

Israel said it would keep its border crossings with the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip closed for a second day on Thursday, prompting the Islamist group to warn that the move could wreck a week-old ceasefire agreement.

Israel closed the crossings on Wednesday in what it said was a response to rockets fired by Islamic Jihad militants. Islamic Jihad said the attack was retaliation for the Israeli army's killing of one of its commanders in the occupied West Bank.

The truce, brokered by Egypt, does not cover the West Bank.

A cease fire is a cease fire. Why in the world did Israel go and break it?

  • I had real hopes for the ceasefire, sadly it seems that overcoming their differences is going to be much harder.

  • Israel needs conflict in order to justify it's existence plain and simple. Now they have forced extremists groups to use conflict to justify their existence. From the little research I've done before as well as accounts from older Palestinians, there was relative peace between Jews and Arabs in Israel before the late 19th Century.

  • It appears that certain special interests have been stirring the proverbial hostility pot over there for some time now...the knowledge and the mechanisms are there to know how to stop this beligerent activity...but getting these people on the same page seems to be a much more difficult task...what are their incentives..?

  • I have written on this subject many times.....so now I am going to plug a movie....Kite Runner.....I had put off watching it because I am depressed enough.....watched it last night and I believe it is one of the most authentic portayals of what life is like for so many......and how much we take for granted.....there.....that's my Maultin minute.....I do hope with all my fiber that something can turn around....all over the world......Golden Ruler....Will....
  • It's a pretty ridiculous statement to say that "Israel needs conflict to justify it's existence." Do some research on Israel's economy. It's booming. The conflict does nothing but hurt Israel, hurt it's economy and it's reputation. They would be doing a hell of a lot better without it. Now take a look at Hamas, Hezbollah, and the like. Now tell me, who needs conflict to justify it's existence? You should understand that the Israeli/Arab conflict is a great way for these oppressive regimes to take the focus off their own misdeeds, their repressive laws, their nonexistent jobs, their lack of infrastructure and their lack of services for their poverty stricken people. Why do you think the Palestinians have received so little help from the Jordanians, Lebanese, Syrians, and Egyptians? Unfortunately, the Palestinians are a pawn.

  • dgold0101 You contradicted yourself in less than three sentences. How can the Israeli-Palestinian conflict be hurting the economy when the economy is booming?

Let's think about it logically for a second: if there is no conflict between Israel and the Middle East countries, there would be no reason for the US to give monetary support and arm poor defenseless and rich little Israel.

  • I fail to see the contradiction. It could be booming even more if tourism wasn't being so affected and if businesses weren't wary of setting up shop there. If you want to research it, simply google the Israeli tech industry, and the Israeli tourism industry. I'm confident you'll find what you need.
You're sidestepping my main point, however.

  • The nation calling itself "Israel" is not the Israel of the bible. They are violent terrorists who have rejected God and are trying to "play" God on earth. Zionist Christians are blinded to the fact they are not the Israel of the bible because most Christians are ignorant of serious bible study.

  • robroy, did you read the article at all? The truce was broken on day 2 BY HAMAS WHEN THEY SHOT ROCKETS INTO ISRAEl. Your analysis of that incident is that the Israelis broke the ceasefire? So far they've neglected to strike back and have not thrown out the truce, so you tell me, who is keeping their side of the agreement here?

  • New TV series that exposes hypocrisy in religion. The number one hypocrisy being that it's OK to kill over who is right about the concept of GOD. It's a primitive savage brutal existence for all you hypocrites out there. That's another way of saying, YOU'RE ALL IDIOTS. Which is why we're making this show. If you kill in the name of any God, whether that deity be God, Allah, Hashem, Buddah, or Shiva then you are a hypocrite.

  • To think about all the war and killing that is goning on in this world is sickening. CANT WE ALL JUST GET ALONG?

  • why does the "truce" not cover the west bank? a truce should mean peace. what the hell is wrong with people?
    adam_romano
  • Gaza and the West Bank are currently two separate entities with two separate regimes in power. Gaza is governed by Hamas, who the truce is with, while the West Bank is governed by Fatah. Also, Gaza is technically a free state since Israel has pulled out and removed all settlements, while the West Bank is still under Israel's jurisdiction.

  • Degold101 you need to read and get out more. Israel broke the truce but not in Gaza, the Palestinians were just responding in the appropiate manner. I don't believe in war and killing myself and I would much rather see peace in the world and if Israel were to declare real peace without killing someone at the same time I know the world would be a much more plesant place and we could all begin to enjoy peace. Until then as long as Israel keeps killing and making war people like myself will voice thier opposition at least I will.

  • You're wrong. The truce was with hamas and with gaza, not with Israel and the West Bank. You can read about it here, from a whole bunch of different sources

    The gist of it:
The initial objective of the deal was to halt the rockets and mortars that have bombarded southern Israel for years and ease Israel's bruising blockade of Gaza.

Israel resealed its cargo crossings with Gaza on Tuesday after militants fired three rockets into southern Israel. The passages have remained closed since then, cutting off shipments of basic supplies that had been increased slightly as part of the cease-fire deal.

I admit, the situation is complicated. Hamas refused to police other militants and said that they could not be held responsible for attacks undertaken by other groups from Gaza. Those who claimed responsibility for the rocket attacks from Gaza are from the Al Asqua Martyr Brigades an offshot of Fatah, who said that they did it because they want a truce to include the West Bank as well.

So you've got a truce with Hamas but rockets still flying from gaza. You've got a group that FIRE ROCKETS BECAUSE THEY ARE UPSET THEY WEREN'T INCLUDE IN A TRUCE from Gaza. Meanwhile, Fatah and Hamas are enemies as well. It puts Israel in a strange position. Hamas has a bit of a point, but they should be responsible for anything that comes out of Gaza, since they are in power.

That being said, Israel did not violate the truce. You're wrong.
