Air travel is a total hassle, man, and marijuana advocates in Denver say everyone would find the normally excruciating process a lot more pleasant if they could enjoy a few bong hits before boarding. It might even help solve a few of the problems that airlines have been experiencing lately. The way they see it, if people can knock a few back before a flight, they should be able to spark one up. They're calling on airports nationwide to install marijuana lounges.
"All we're saying is, in light of the fact drunk and disorderly incidents on airplanes are becoming more common, it really makes sense to allow adults the choice to use marijuana," says Mason Tvert, executive director of Safer Alternative for Enjoyable Recreation, the organization calling for the lounges. "There's no rational reason our government would allow people to use alcohol and not use marijuana."
Well, except for the fact the feds classify marijuana a Schedule 1 drug, putting it alongside heroin, mescaline meth and acid on its list of Drugs That Definitely Are Evil.
Tvert says many travelers consider flying stressful, so they'll have a drink - or two, or three, or... - before boarding. That can lead to problems, such as the case last week where a JetBlue passenger allegedly lit up a cigarette and socked a flight attendant. She blamed the crew for serving her three vodkas. U.S Attorney Troy Eid told the Rocky Mountain News the feds are seeing a record number of passengers - often drunk - misbehaving on airplanes. "I think sometimes people think this is a joke," he says. "They think it's funny. And they're going to find out otherwise as we do more and more of these cases."
SAFER says giving people the option of smoking a joint before their flights would relax them without making them unruly. But don't expect the feds or the airports to go along with the idea. Chuck Cannon, a spokesman for Denver International Airport, told the Denver Post he doesn't foresee marijuana smoking in the airport. "Marijuana is illegal isn't it?," he says. "All the bars and restaurants are concessions and they sell what they sell. I do not know that we are going to tell them what they can sell. Alcohol is legal and tobacco is legal and marijuana is not."
Tvert said he doesn't have a problem with alcohol being sold in airports -- although some people do, and say it should be banned -- but says people should have another option. "It is irrational and potentially dangerous policy to continue allowing passengers to get drunk before and during flights while prohibiting them from simply making the safer choice to use marijuana prior to boarding," Tvert says.

I get stoned before trips anyway...trips to the bathroom, trips to school, trips out of state in cars. Getting stoned before getting on a plane would yeild the ULTIMATE trip hahaha.
-
to each his own...
-
That gives a new meaning to "flying-high". All this talk about getting stoned, eating brownies and blazin' just reminded me about a stinky nugget I almost forgot I had.
Thanks.-

Dude, airlines would make so much money off concessions. And maybe more people would actually buy the stuff they see in the Skymall catalogue.

i too get high before i fly...definitely makes my airport experience much more enjoyable...as a matter of fact I am gonna get high right now and finish watching this spain v russia game...
-
Back when I use to smoke I took a plane trip from Virginia to Florida completely baked out of my mind. I thought it might help my fear of heights. As it turned out I had a window seat right behind the wing and I spent the entire time watching it flex up and down in absolute terror.
-
this makes no sense...why would tokers even suggest something like this...
...are you with us?...oh wait...no you're not...
what a silly idea...why would any government have designated areas for something that is illegal in their country...-

if you can't travel without doing drugs or getting drunk...you have more serious issues than just travelling anxiety...

hah so true, this isn't helping to make us seem reasonable, plus, alot of people get very paranoid n can't handle their ganj, might be just as bad as alchohol.
-
It's not travel anxiety...it's just making the tediousness of sitting down for hours on end and trying to entertain yourself in a tiny space a little more bearable.
Most people can't get through a regular day without a drink or a cigarette, why should weed be any different? Because it's illegal? It's only illegal because the government can't figure out how to tax it and there are too many fat cats in Washington who are convinced that Reefer Madness actually exists.
Alcohol does way more damage on your system than weed and a person whose high (while listless and eating cheetos) can function much better than a person who's drunk. -
Seriously, it makes no since to me that pot's illegal and drugs like alcohol and painkillers aren't. They are abused way more often and are far more harmful for you then marijuana. Can any government official give me a legitimate reason way this "terrible drug needs to be off the streets" and not some bullshit Nixon political propaganda? Of course not . . .

I don't go anywhere where I'll be in contact with the general public without getting high because I know I'll be encountering stressful situations and running into at least a couple of douchebags while out. Smoking a joint helps me maintain my cool in otherwise irritating and stressful situations.
Just don't give the pilots a joint, the last thing I need while flying is the pilot performing a loop de loop in the air. I know if I were a pilot and high that would be hella funny to do to the passengers. -
Weeds illegal, there's no way really around it. But being high can help with the stress of the airport for some, and for a lot of people it would freak them out. Hella security cameras all over and people with guns looking for anyone acting suspicious; SKETCH.
But lets imagine what it would be like if there were cafes in airports. I foresee many missed connections and a lot of confused travelers.
Its a lot better if people just do it on their own with friends or family before walking into the airport.
GO SPAIN! -
I'm still going to blaze before my flight, whether or not they do go through with this. But I have to admit this will make it that much more easier and pleasant.

Airport vendors could make a killing!-

I've done that a few times. It can get real tricky knowing where your connecting flight is.
-
if you know how to smoke pot then your not gunna forget what time your flight is. thats just dumb.

the little bag of peanuts wouldnt be enough for the munchies.I would be too paranoid and think everybody was staring at me b/c thay all know were about to crash but me.
-
Ah yes, if it were only legal. The whole thing is: IT SHOULD BE! There are so many people in jail for nothing more than having pot on their person. A most heinous crime indeed.
Decriminalizing weed would solve more problems than it might create. Emphasize might.
Have you ever heard of a murder where the motive was a bag of weed? Or robbing grandma or 7-11 so they could get their pot fix? On the 6 o'clock news: A man was arrested today for causing a 5 car pile-up. He was driving under the influence of marijuana.
Of course not! It just doesn't happen.
I believe marijuana is less destructive to self and others than alcohol. But alas, alcohol is legal.
It's true, the government wants us to believe pot is a "gateway drug", causing a lifelong chase for the "bigger high". Whatever. It's classified in the same category as heroin and cocaine. WHY??? They are complete opposites!
Reefer Madness? Absolutely hilarious!!!-

Alcohol doesn't make people relaxed. It generally f**ks them up, depending on how well they can handle it. Socking an airline attendant? Really. Since when has pot made ANYONE agressive? Screw this gateway drug thing, I say just legalize it already!

There is a distinct difference between an alcoholics and a pot heads. The social disfunction that follows alcoholism drains society so much more than lazy hippies. However, the diverse economics are staggering. Between the War on Drugs and jailing pot dealers and "water pipe" vendors, taxing marijuana would probably pour money into a very weak economy. Meanwhile, Absolut comes up with a new flavor every month (not that I'm complaining).

Most parents want their kids to stay away from drugs and alcohol. Legalizing marijuana will definitely keep it out of more kids' hands. Weed is available to everyone when it's illegal--I once met a 14-year-old kid who was selling it. His primary customers were other 14-year-olds. If it was legalized and regulated, that would be a much rarer thing.

Look at amsterdam... Its legal there and how often do you hear bad things that happened there... Rarely.. Last time I heard something it was about some girl who accidently killed herself.. But it wasn't from weed, it was from shrooms. Even here in the US, whenever you hear something about weed its the police seized 100 pounds of weed in a car or house. Not Jane or John Doe died of overdose of weed.
The only thing making it illegal is doing is making people want it even more. It falls into the whole want what you cant have thing.
And with the gateway drug thing, me and quite a few of the people I know that smoke.. Started with other drugs then started smoking weed.-

Always fly high. Especially on long flights, never seem to get jet lag, so smoking has its benefits. blaze1 for the nation!
-
Legalize it, people are going to do what they want anyway. I am waiting for the day pot clubs are legal, just like bars.
