Danish Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson has unveiled his latest project in NYC. With all spigots finally a-go, this $15 million dollar environmental installation project is cascading water on the banks of NYC’s East River and NY Harbor.
The four waterfalls are located on Governor's Island, under the Brooklyn Bridge, and on two piers. They are visible by day through October 13 from both the Manhattan and Brooklyn sides of the East River.

I spent 8 years living in New York, it's such a great city for these outdoor installations..wish I was there to see this one!

Check the site for more info. I wish I had a trip to NYC planned this summer - that looks awesome.
-
damn now I really wish I was going to NYC in the fall! Olafur Eliasson is an amazing artist...Im so glad I got to see his exhibit at the SF MoMA, it was by far one of the most breathtaking and mind blowing shows Ive seen in quite some time.
-
I went to the MOMA, to see his exhibit, the one that was just in San Francisco, and the coolest thing about it was that they had orange lights, which made everything look black and white. I felt like I was in Casablanca or something.

apparently this is gonna help boost tourism...it seems pretty wasteful as far as the environment is concerned though.

I think it's cool to revamp cities with innovative ideas like this one.
-
This is really cool and all, but is this really the best way to spend $15 million dollars?

15 million for a "waterfall", im in the wrong business.
-
A continually functioning waterfall along with ways to maintain it and keep it looking great. Doing works with water is far more difficult than just 'just'---as in JUST a waterfall.
-
how long think they just have this waterfall?
-
i really dont think that looks very cool at all, maybe im just a skeptic
-
I suppose its cool... i guess... but... *cough* waste of money *cough*

through october? why would you spend 15 mil on this installation just to tear it down? I love it, our urban sprawls can be so dull and grey, this is a great way to fight the ugliness of our forceful expansion of drab.
-
Hey Olafur Eliasson.... which is it? Danish or Icelandic? Pick a side! ;)
-
I like Olafur's work a lot. And as far as the $$ question goes, I would rather spend 15 million on art than spend a dime (let alone trillions of dollars) in Iraq. There are better resources to take from than art spending, imo.

As a transcendentalist at heart and a big fan of Emerson and Thoreau, I love the idea of bringing a slice of nature to cities that otherwise have little of it. Although I love the idea, I just think that there's something very artificial-looking about this instillation and if you're going to spend $15 million, do it on something that will have more lasting effects.
-
i guess this is cool, but this money could and SHOULD be going somewhere else. no offence, mr. eliassson.

I think I went to the MOMA about 10 times, just to see his "take your time" exhibit. very cathartic.
-
i love ny anyway! road trip pending. the waterfalls r beeyutifull!!!!!!!!!!! i hope the native ny'ers appreciate it. they can b fickle about art. FEAR NO ART!
-
Brilliant... ???
-
seems like the word "art" is being used a bit liberally to me..
-
I think its bull crap that u can call ne thing art. Fine... I made a sculpture in my toilet this morning I would like to put on display. BTW- it didn't cost millions.
-
I've been to huge DJ parties inside the anchorage of the Brooklyn Bridge years ago.
Good to see they're using the bridge in new ways. -
i think it's amazingly stupid.

Wow. Beautiful.
Wish they could keep it going always.
Waterfalls aerate the water.
Good for fish and all water life.
Spray from waterfall adds moisture to
surronding air and creates a verdant
ecosystem. Plants will thrive.
It's beautiful and will enrich the souls of
New Yorkers, especially the kids who live
in poverty in the projects on the Lower
East Side east of Alphabet City where
we used to live.
Brava and kudos to the artists. -
waste of money and energy. not to mention how nasty that water is. they're gonna have clean them out every week. even more money gone. and who wants all that dirty mist in the air?
-
It's like putting a plastic bonsai tree on my desk at work.
If you are amused by an artificial waterfall I do feel sorry for you.
Could NYC's shelters ( homeless, dog, IDK anything) not find anything to do with 15mil?
Christ.-

saw this on the news this morning, i think these things are kind of ugly. i mean, the one under the brooklyn bridge is quite nice but the one just standing up with nothing near it is just not that aesthetically pleasing.
-
If you're planning a trip to NYC just to see the waterfalls, why don't you go a little north instead to the Niagara Falls? You'll thank me.

Read this link on water quality improvements in East River.
"The water quality of the East River has improved considerably after the Clean Water Act of 1972.(18) The water is well oxygenated, clearer, and the level of coliform bacteria, in dry weather conditions, is low enough to fish and boat.(19) Bathing is not yet recommended."
Not nasty, and improving thanks to the good folks who work on saving the Hudson River. -
Captain_Beefheart, waterfalls are "fast and bulbous".
-
Children living in poverty care about art.
The money raised for the waterfalls art project was from private donors. Think the current U.S. government would have raised that kind of money to help kids living in poverty? If they did, how much of the money would have actually ended up helping children and not just in the pockets of Bush/Cheney cronies.
Ask Chicano artists Gronk how much art mattered to him as a kid growing up in East L.A. Gronk, now an internationally recognized artist, credits artist, educator Betty LaDuke (Winona LaDuke's mom) who taught art to him and other kids in East LA in the 1970s, whether art matters to children living in poverty.
Art matters. It can and does change lives.
