Nokia has decided to try their hand at a green phone, it is a growing trend so perhaps it’s time for them to jump on the bandwagon as well. Although this is still a concept design, the fact that they are trying their hand at it even is a good sign. The phone was made using old PET bottles, soda cans and car tires to show how the process of Upcycling can be used to create new, environmentally-friendly products.Hopefully we'll see something like this reach production soon.

How much of a difference is this really going to make? Is this a jumping-on-of-a-bandwagon or a genuine environmentally beneficial idea. The main issue with this is that the release newer phones will inevitably encourage users to buy newer phones that they don't need. Why buy a new phone and recycle [or the much more likely option of dumping] the old one unnecessarily.
So long as the old phone works, that is it can make a call, why replace it? -
Nice piece of design...

Good to see some big companies trying to be more environmentally friendly.

While that is a very good point, I think Nokia has made a huge leap forward. It would be possible to phase out old phones and have a sustainable cycle of reusing and recycling phones to be made into new ones.

Cool, now if the US gov would just wake the hell up and take a real lead on the issue...
I guess it's going to have to be one person at a time, one company at a time, one state at a time.
Starts with YOU (me). -
Cheaply made cell phones manufactured by Chinese slaves made from garbage and sold to green loving westerners at a premium by multi-national corporations. Brilliant!

.,,and you won't hear those detais in their commercials!

i like this idea, though i am concerned, as with any standard recycling program, how much energy is spent and waste created during the recycling of the PET bottles, car tires, etc.?
don't get me wrong; maybe this is just one step in the right direction, but what about the long term? -
Yay for businesses taking the initiative to go green!

They've come such a long way since the 3310!
Good work Nokia. Now sort your ringtones out. :D -
I'm surprised these things aren't made of 100% old nokia phones.
Man those things were garbage.-

I was watching Tyra (I know, I know, I'm a hypocrite because I always diss fluff tv, but I'm gay, she's a fierce black woman, and us gays love to emulate fierce black women), and she had some lady who sold cowpatties in the forms of clocks with cute phrases on them.
Nokia should make a cell phone out of petrified dung patties, that way you can say your phone really is "the shit". HAHAHA. -
How many of you dissing the phone companies own one of their cell phones?
I can actually criticize them because I haven't owned a cell phone in over 7 years. I finally recognized the beauty of not being able to be contacted when I don't want to be. I know I can simply ignore the calls, but I wouldn't be able to take a self righteous position on the subject of cell phone use if I owned one.
I just make sure I am always with someone who does own a cell phone and I give their number to my boyfriend for emergency calls for me. My friends don't mind me using them to take a self-righteous stance on cell phone use.
I hope I'm never alone in a dark alley without a cell phone, then I'll have no one else to blame when I get my self righteous ass mugged or even worse raped/killed.
I'm sure eventually I'll own one again, but I'm trying my best to resist. -
If the tecnology is there, everything should be made of rubbish. I dont see why not.
-
There is so much electronic waste in the world, there should be nothing "new" being made.

You think we'd be more organized with what we do with our waste by now. It should be illegal to throw away plastic or anything that can be reused and recycled in any way.
-
my family has always recycled. im 40 years old now and used to take a load of shit from friends about how we never threw anything away. its the least we can do 2 help each other out. Yeah! Nokia! Ya gotta start somewhere!!
-
I hope that now that it's "CHIC" to be earth conscious, the formerly wasteful will join in.
My phone dies every year. Made for obsolescence and the sales force n the stores are complicit within the scheme. In the good old days there were "loaners" that you could use until your phone arrived. This, if it was an insurance claim or other covered loss. They also get to have your soul for another two years. Wouldn't it make sense to recycle all phones and give them to people who can't afford this shoddy workmanship?
I don't know when the new breed of greedy people will realize that you can get just as rich running a straight ahead business as you can running a scam. Kudos to Nokia for the effort. I need to do a bit more research. I guess I've become a tad leery. Private Ibber-

Love this.
And yeah, privateibber, I swear phones are designed to die the minute your 18-month contract ends. How do they DO that?!-
