Domestic Disturbances: America Loves Abused Puppies Approximately 2.5 Times More Than Battered Women

For a brief time, I did some volunteer work at a shelter for domestic and sexually abused women. I spent time with their children, while they attended counseling and other related appointments. While visiting there, I felt severed from what I identified as "normal" life. I felt sad, guilty and anxious. I wondered why I felt guilty, because I never abused a woman in any kind of way. However, I did realize that I saw it done. Sometimes it was verbal or a slight shove and maybe more when I looked the other way. In the end, I discovered that my cowardliness or indifference helped create the atmosphere necessary for this type of abuse to be so prevalent. It deeply saddens me that the resources for these women are severely deficient."These women" are our mothers, sisters, wives, aunts, cousins, friends, lovers, co-workers, teachers, doctors, legislators and so much more. Perhaps, we as a country are guilty of the environment that allows and facilitates violence against women. What's wrong with us?

  • we're becoming immune to it. the general public in japan don't care about those who kill themselves and think of it as an annoyance and inconvenience for them becaue it happens so often and so casually...

    ...same idea with domestic abuse.

  • For some reason, America has this strange thing about violence. Canadians are more able to purchase weaponry than we are but for some reason, shootings are higher in America. Same applies with women. We have a BIG BIG problem with rape in our country. Approximately 25% of the women population have endured some sort of sexual harassment and/or attack ranging from name calling to rape.

  • can you really compare an abused puppy to an abused human? i mean, i have empathy for both but i think people gravitate to puppies more because they are easier to care for and you can find them a good home with ease etc. this is a sensitive topic but i don't think comparing abuse victims is the way to approach this topic. abuse is abuse and neither should be accepted but there are people out there who are fucked in the head and those are the ones who need help as well.
