Volkswagen's been toying with hybrids for awhile and got electric-vehicle advocates in a lather over the diesel-electric Golf it unveiled a few months ago. Now the company's promising a plug-in hybrid by 2010 and the German government's written a big check to make it happen.
"While the e-motor on a typical hybrid model just supplements the combustion engine, the exact opposite is true on Twin Drive," Winterkorn said during the car's unveiling in Berlin. "Here the diesel or gasoline engine supplements the e-motor."

Funny how this is coming from Wired mag, the same publication that recently denounced hybrids for their heavy consumption of resources.

*cue whiny voice* I wanna diesel-electric golf!!!!

Why use a gasoline or diesel engine at all?
It is possible for any automobile to run on 100% electricity. The only thing keeping us from this is the oil companies with the help of the government. Ever seen "Who Killed the Electric Car"?-

Can the price of these hybrid cars go any lower? I like hybrids but they're still expensive. I'm planning to get an all electric or hybrid car by 2010.

Hey VW wanna bring this up to your Audi? Cause I'll wait for the electric TT.
-
If they chuck in one of these, I'll take one!
VW ist wunderbar! -
Dose the distance the VW can travel depend on how long the wire is that is connected to the plug?Just curious,

VW was my first car when I was 18. Wow! Can I come back to be 18 again? Ha! Sure not but the car still here with many great improvements. Go Buggy!
-
nice work, you crazy Germans.
-
Nice, yeah, but does it chat up random women in a zany German accent?
-
What is it with hybrid cars and that stupid bubble shape?
-
And that is why I tell everyone to buy German cars, they are just better engineered and, if you are like me and love performance, they are better cars over all. BMW, ftw! (haha, in a VW thread) I love VW, too! (promise :P)

This sounds nice but we need much more ambitious plans than this. Electricity is still mostly generated by burning coal anyway. The German government investing $23.5 million dollars in hybrid programs isn't exactly a huge boost. And they're hoping for 1 million hybrids on the road by 2020? In 12 years I want a solar car! I think everyone should aim much higher.
-
I agree, Jay -- it's no good substituting coal for oil. That's why the price for solar PV panels (or dishes) needs to come down, and we all need to be plugging our cars into our solar panels :-)
-
This is the way of the future.... I want one!!!

O.K. for all of you who think electric cars are a tit for tat answer to the problem think about this......
A car paying 200 per month for gasoline could instead be paying 17 to 20 dollars for electricity to charge an electric car.
So keep your hybrid until it comes with nothing but a plug..-
