The world seems to be losing the battle against the production, trafficking and use of illicit drugs, a UN report has warned.

The 2008 World Drug Report, released on Thursday in Nairobi, indicates that an upsurge in supply and the development of new trafficking routes, mostly through Africa, could eventually strengthen drug demand in developed countries. This, it adds, will see the creation of new markets for some of the world’s deadliest substances.

So why is the U.S. continuing to spend billions of dollars every year on a "War on Drugs" that spills over into sovereign countries? (As a side note, I'm sick of all the endless wars being waged on abstract notions). Roughly $45.5 billion was spent in 2005 fighting the war on drugs. If these efforts are not working, how about we try a new approach? Education, adequate treatment facilities, and investment in communities would do wonders to reduce the use of drugs. Not only could we reduce spending on law enforcement, but also reduce the number of potentially productive citizens locked up in the prison system sucking billions more tax dollars.
