All so you can have a burger

onechance
Three cows too sick or weak to stand were sold at the Portales Livestock Auction in Portales, N.M., the Humane Society of the United States said. Such cows pose increased risk for mad cow disease, E. coli and other infections, partly because they typically wallow in feces and their immune systems often are weak.

But the facility’s owner said he was certain that there was “no way” a so-called downer cow could have gotten into the food supply, and a top federal official agreed.

More on the story below this video from The Associated Press, broadcast June 25, 2008. Warning: some viewers may find this video disturbing.

    • It's about the numbers. It is not okay for all of us to eat meat. It's not sustainable. It increases the demand and ergo precipitates the cruelty to these bovines (and fish and foul). It is also not in our genetic code, as some would imply above, to to eat meat. We started out as herbivores and went to meat when forced in periods/areas where vegetation was not to be found. We're like cockroaches in the way we can eat almost anything. Nonetheless, our primary food is flora - it's what is best for our systems - and not fauna. And, the meat eating, particularly beef, is not only not required for our livelihood, it is not part of our design to eat as we have digestive troubles from it and our teeth are primarily structured for chewing vegetation. We have two incisors - not a mouth full of them. Thus, if you want to make a difference for the cows suffering around the globe, modify your diet. If enough of us reduce, or better yet, stop, our intake of beef, fewer animals will need to be slaughtered. Yep, it's the numbers that count - the supply for our demand.

And on that yawning point - please, let's step up the intellectual discussion.

    • I swithed to Buffalo & Bison a long time ago because of these problems. It's healthier because it's leaner & doesn't need to be cooked as long or at such a high temp. Free range, grass fed is the way to go. And I tell people who don't know only after they've eaten it & have converted many. Try it-you'll love it!

    • Yikes! I can't call myself a vegetarian but I eat less beef than ever and don't miss it at all! Working toward a better eating style constantly and certain organic is the way to go. This is disgusting! Pass the veggies please!

    • Here is another interesting story about yawning from the NY times. It says that animals who are cloned do not yawn.

      Very weird.

    • I looked up the reason people yawn on this website called "How Stuff Works" and it made for an interesting read.

I couldn't find any reference to meat eating as J_Jammer stated above.

Perhaps he would share his research?

    • This administration is not going to devote any resources to a stepchild agency such as the U.S.D.A. This should be one of the priorities of the next administration.

    • yet another reason to support your local farms, farmer's market, or co-op. in my opinion, you should only eat what you know you can kill yourself. barring that, i guess it's okay if you can raise it up yourself and take it your local whack and pack for the killing.

    • Most of you guys are all missing the point, I realy cant believe this! I got invited to comment on this for some reason & all it has done is frustrate me. Eat meat, please do. Its not about that though, its about cruelty to animals.

Oh & another thing... I quote "and they should turn the stomach of every American" ...so why couldnt he say something like 'everyone' or every good human being or something like that? its like these guys are trying to piss me off or they realy do believe that the rest of the world (yes it does exist) are all savages. We had a programme in good old GBR called 'Kill it, Cook it, Eat it' where various different animals were slaughtered on live telly.

The slaughter house was connected to the butchers which was connected to the cooking bit & everything was open to SEE (obviously not open to tresspass or to spread whatever) so you could see everything & how clean it was & how fast & painless it was. Granted, it was diturbing but if your gunna eat it your gunna have to deal with it. The issue with this video is the poor quality of life... well more like the disasterous shitness of the life this poor animal must have led.

Shocking behaviour by those twats. pulling the eyes out & that, I mean what the fuk? People are put in jail for assaulting a human... dude, these things are a-fuking-live. Wake up to this fact. They think theyre all high & mighty just cos theyre humans, Bull Shit!*

      *(no pun intended).

    • Raising animals for meat takes massive amounts of land that could instead be used for growing a much more plentiful crop of whatever can grow there.

As much as I disapprove of eating meat and slaughtering animals to get it, American farmers should realize why Kobe beef is way better than the **** they sell. They feed the cows booze and massage them...

    • Eat only meat from local ranchers and butchers that sell only free range and grass fed beef.

Otherwise don't eat the poison they sell in the supermarkets that they call BEEF....ITS WHAT'S FOR DINNER.

There's something to be said for that... I grew up on a farm.

It's when it's based on disgusting greed and complete abuse that everything goes wrong.

I've said it before, but if you can't look that animal in the eyes and end its life, you don't deserve to eat it, or defend eating it.

      I can't, so I don't.

    • It all comes down to cost, you eat what you can afford, don't blame the people who eat it, try and stop the people who are doing it.

For the record I find Vegan and Vegetarian food to be pretty bland and tasteless, we have teeth made for cutting meat, you might as well use them.

Meats + Veggies + Grains, eat balanced!

    • According to studies the animals that yawn hunt for their food. Yawning has been linked to keeping the person aware of the surroundings, like a offense mechanism that's suppose to keep the yawner more aware and keep them from falling asleep when they shouldn't. This means that if you yawn then you are a hunter someone that should be eating meat, for if you were truly a herbivore you wouldn't yawn at all for there's not a single herbivore that yawns.

As for the way meat is treated it is wrong to mistreat animals for profit. I dislike cockfighting because it's vicious and it's like tying blades to three year olds and letting them have at it. It's pointless.

I'll continue to eat meat but agree that cows, pigs and chickens do not need to be mistreated in order to be eaten. Not even Carnivores of the wild tease and abuse their pray. It's an odd form of respect.

    • Cut down on eating meat.

      It will make you healthier.

Buy organic meats. If you're buying less, the higher cost is bearable and buying organic is good for the earth and all our relations.

Eat more rice and beans. They're delicious and healthful.

Read DIET FOR A SMALL PLANET. This seminal book is even more timely today.

    • I am not against eating meat, but I do not support factory farming practices. I get grass-fed beef from sources that humanely raise their cattle. I won't eat tortured beef.
