Murray the last Brit standing in SW19

The much-loved British tradition of roaring on our tennis heroes and tennis zeros continued in fine fashion Thursday night after schedulers arranged for both Scot Andy Murray and Englishman Chris Eaton (ranked a lowly 661 in the world!) to play in the day's last matches on the show courts.

Murray came through in straight sets against Frenchman Fabrice Santoro, but the real drama surrounded until-now-unknown Chris Eaton, who was willed on into the night by an army of young, good looking fans, against the number 25 seed, Russian Tursunov.

Placed over 600 spots lower than the Russian in the rankings Eaton impressed in the first set taking it to a nervy tie-break but eventually fell in 3 sets after forcing Tursunov to serve for the match.

Me thinks we'll be seeing more of this Chris Eaton, hopefully on, but definitely off, the court too if his screaming female fans have their way.

Oh - and the last British womens' hope crashed out of Wimbledon yesterday too losing to defending champ Venus Williams.

So I guess we'll only be hearing "C'mon Andy" for the next week, and perhaps the odd "C'mon Tim" from the nostalgic jokers amongst us.

  • Murray is a plonker

  • Wimbledon sucks. I hate the way the press is always going on about the British players. Most of them are truly average. Does the US media make such a fuss if an American player does well in the US Open? Ditto the Australian press? Its this annual celebration of the average that is really grating.

To be fair to Murray, he is a good player. I can still remember when Jeremy Bates was our great British hope.
