US: man gets life sentence for smoking a joint

This 20/20 report shows a side by side comparison of two cases. The same judge presides over the two cases. One man is free to live his life as he wants, after committing murder, and the other in jail for life after smoking marijuana.

Ridiculous.

  • This is so unfair.
How many more days of Bush?
    This can not continue.
Like the images of the damn thieves stealing supplies during Katrina and the poor white people trying to find supplies any way they could for another image.

  • We are in need of a good house cleaning Starting in the dome and going to the basement, and inlcluding every room. That man shouldn't have even gotten a damned ticket let alone jail. It's his own fault though. there he was being black. He should know better, prolly does now.

  • This is pretty blatant. But wait, I thought Racism wasn't a 'big deal' anymore. I'm curious to see how people rationalize this one.

  • He was released from prison on March 16, 2007

  • Yes, this is an old article. I found where Tyrone was pardoned as stated.

That will be where Tyrone's real story begins, as he has been incarcerated for the major portion of his life. That will be a big hurdle for him to cross. I hope he is doing well.

As for the "good ole boy" network, it is alive and going strong. Lives are not treated equal today, and more stories like this one exist.

Just watching this story got me thinking, putting this news into the spotlight is so good, it helps us understand how injustice and inequity become so rampant in our society and eventually we become immune to it all. Then we accept this behavior, yet this is what goes on in our legislative process all day long, it is called cronyism, good ole boy, etc. We seem to be waking up and the rats will jump ship. That is my hope. (smiling)

  • Wow, I feel more pessimistic about American justice decisions with more examples that I hear of.

  • The only thing that comes to mind in situations like these, as far as an explanation, is something my favorite Government teacher always said. "You can't apply logic or reason to government, it just doesn't work and all you do is make your head explode."

But truthfully, as much I would love to say "Oh, this isn't racism" it really is. At it's very best you can say that this is just a case showing how classist and elitetist or society is.

  • Just because his father is rich and a pastor doesn't mean his son could be let off from murder. The other guy gave back the dudes wallet! What robber does that?!

Another case that shows the legal system is messed up.

  • This may be old, but it doesn't change the fact that this happens everyday in every state.
And it's not just limited to this sort of thing. Look at Lindsey Lohan or any celebrity for that matter.
LEGALIZE THE REEFER! and this would be a thing of the past.
This nation was founded on hypocrisy and nothing has changed.

  • I do not believe that fighting against "The War on Drugs" makes me a liberal or a hippie or a druggie. This video speaks for itself. Fighting in this fake war, as that judge is, as any police officer is, as anyone who puts Security above Liberty is, yes fighting in this war will only lead to your own demise.

I get the feeling that a lot of these people who believe in tough drug sentencing standards and injustice will be judged by the higher power I am sure they claim to believe in.

Ending "The War on Drugs" is the moral calling of this generation. I will participate. I will fight for the side of Justice and Freedom and the Constitution. I hope everybody here will too.

  • The war on drugs is a cover-up name for the war on the lower class.

  • Our system is the white man's mafia.
    Sickening.

  • This is infuriating. I am glad to hear that Tyrone was finally pardoned last year. I would like to see him take some sort of legal action against the judge.

  • Ok this may or may not had anything to do with race. But all you race whistle blowers need to understand that this completely was about money. O.J. Simpson slit two people's throats and got away with it. Guess what him and the gay guy related to a pastor (ironic god would give a pastor a gay son right lol) THEY BOTH HAD MONEY. This poor black kid from south dallas didnt have money.

Its all about the money, ITS ALWAYS ABOUT THE MONEY!

  • Unbelievable.

And to think ... indeed to have the NERVE to say this isn't overtly racist ... shows true head-in-the-sand ignorance. Pathetic.

This is an abomination. Plain and simple.

  • The justice system is messed up and something needs to be done about it. It IS all about money and slavery. Not to forget the POWER these morons need to survive

  • lthe bill of rights is more like the bill of privelages. i guess if your the right person (money, close friends, sex or race) then you can get rights. in this case i say money is why justice was not served.

  • Y'all should read the book called "The Innocent Man" by John Grisham. It'll show you something far worse than this 20/20 pot smoker. He did something illegal. And while what he did was in no way justifiable for the sentence he got, these men in this tale of "The Innocent Man" did nothing wrong that could be legally placed against them.

Then if you've seen "In The Name of the Father" with Daniel Day Lewis you can know that the unfairness isn't only held to America's system.

It's just a flaw of wanting to solve a case and blame someone and wanting to look good for doing it no matter the cause.

  • The footage of Tyrone Brown in jail at the end of this piece was heartbreaking.

I think until all judges aren't overwhelmingly white, male, middle-aged and from wealthy backgrounds, this kind of discrimination can only continue. What do you think?
    mischabarrett
  • oh my god, this is horrendous. Does anyone know what happened (if anything) to Tyrone Brown after this aired? Was the judge re-elected?

  • He was released from prison last year, as someone else pointed out, and I'm happy for him. But, a "conditional pardon" doesn't make up for being forced to spend half of your life in confinement because you weren't from some prominent, influential, highly respected, etc. etc. family.
