California to drivers: Drop the cell phone, dude!

Several U.S. states and some two dozen countries around the world already have restrictions on mobile phones while driving but now such a law has come to California -- where the car is king and much of life is spent on the famously snarled freeways.
Californians interviewed by Reuters mostly supported the law requiring hands-free phones in cars and outlawing cell phones entirely for drivers under 18, which takes effect on Tuesday -- though they were puzzled by a loophole that allows seemingly more dangerous text messaging.

Only in the same way that the morons in Sacramento say that cell phones cause accidents. Prostitution will happen with or without condoms and automobile accidents will happen with or without cell phones. The law is a stupid invasion of your and my privacy by Big Brother. Another attempt by the government to stick its nose in where it doesn't belong.

I still don't agree with your analogy. Condoms make sex safer, cell phones make driving more dangerous. It is not an invasion of privacy, it's an attempt to make the roads safer which, as a pedestrian who's almost been run over dozens of times by careless drivers, I appreciate. Driving is a privilege, not a right.

Banning cell phones while driving to reduce accidents is like banning condom use during sex to reduce prostitution. Neither will work and both are too stupid to be credible.

great, have you ever just made yourself aware of how many people are on the roads, bridges, streets and talking on the cellphone. It is very scary, this is a good law that hopefully will prevent accidents.

It's about time, for once, I hope Texas follows suit. I will not answer my phone when I'm driving, if I absolutely need to make a call (directions, mainly) then I pull into a parking lot and make the call, or have my passenger do it (if I have one with me) :) That's the way it should be!

Unless it's an emergency (which 4 year olds should be able to identify) there is no reason to use a cell in the car. Unless you're on a road trip, you're not in the car for more than one hour at a time. You'll live without talking to anyone for one hour... And you should have someone in the car with you anyway. (Carpools ftw)

When you're taking pictures, make sure you photograph the cops that talk on their phones and drive around in police cars, okay?

That's good and all, but it's the act of being immersed in a conversation that takes away from a driver's concentration on the road.

I work nights, Friday and Saturday nights always afford a good number of scary drivers (weaving, speeding up/slowing down/braking for no apparent reason etc.) Half these people I see are on the phone, the other half are probably hammered. Or both.
How did we ever get by, back in the olden days before cell phones? (/sarcasm)

i've listened to several mates who're EMTs , and their stories are enough to convince me that anyone on a cell phone while driving is a liability .

This is actually something California has done that I like. I do find it odd though that they let text messaging be ok. Oh, you can't talk to anybody while driving, but you can type to them! How is it personal freedom when some moron is driving with one of those squawkboxes attached to their face, paying no attention to the road and kills someone? Didn't that person just infringe upon the other's personal freedoms? It's common sense. You get in the car, TURN THE CELLPHONE OFF! You're driving, you're busy. You can call them back. The fact that there has to be a law for this is evidence for the reason that I have no faith in humanity.

A few years ago, I was coming home for lunch and while I was safely taking the left turn into my subdivision, a neighbor who I didn't know, almost ran into me because she was on her cell phone.
Honestly, I would have liked to tell her to be more careful but I did not have any time to do so.
I do hope that most states will rapidly follow suit.
I don't mind if folks use their cell phones if they are not driving ie they've pulled to a stop and parked the car.
Doing this ( and this includes TEXTING which I find to be just plain stupid ) while the vehicle is moving is just asking for trouble.
Care enough about the folks driving around you and you will realize that your health and welfare and their health and welfare are much more important than that phone call.

Californians spend so much time in their cars, it's unreasonable to think they will stop using their cell phones, especially when pretty much stopped in traffic for hours.
But they'll pass the law, like the one they passed in Santa Fe, then later in the whole state of New Mexico.
Just another step in getting Americans to give up their personal freedoms.
Live free. Resist.

It's unreasonable? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think there was a time when people drove cars and cell phones didn't exist.

It's actually been proven that hands-free sets don't do anything to improve you're driving while talking on the phone. It's still as dangerous as driving drunk.

I dig manuals so this issue has never been a problem for me. This is a great law though. Way to many people die each year in car accidents.
