AT&T whistleblower says spy bill creates "infrastructure for a police state"

Mark Klein, the engineer who discovered and publicized the secret NSA program to tap much of the Internet when he worked at AT&T, speaks out against the bill currently before congress that would reform the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA).

The bill, known as the FISA Amendments Act would grant legal immunity to AT&T and others for their cooperation in the spying programs. It would also, Klein says, provide "the physical apparatus for the government to collect and store a huge database on virtually the entire population, available for data mining whenever the government wants to target its political opponents at any given moment—all in the hands of an unrestrained executive power. It is the infrastructure for a police state."

  • this guy knows what he is talking about too, he was the person who actually installed the hardware that copied all the private data which was sent directly to BushCO.

This man should receive a medal!

  • This is the most dangerous thing that the administration has implemented yet. Remember this, IBM built a computer and data base for the Germans to collect information on it's citizens for Hitler. We know how that worked out don't we?
  • I did see this already but thanks for the heads up MM!
I will look at it again to see if there is new info

  • It is creepy, Why does the Department of Homeland Security need a huge data base filled with info on us? Why do we have a huge private military? Why are there prison camps in every state? This is right out of Hitler's play book. I'm afraid, and you should be.
  • So can we finally remove the headline, "Land of the Free"? It hasn't existed for decades, and I'm surprised no American has sued for that too. This country is filled with fail.

  • This is THE reason there is an immunity clause for the telecos in the new FISA bill. They were caught red handed by Mark. He called it “the Big Brother machine”.

Included is his interview with Keith O.

Can you imagine the threats this guy’s received?

  • Unfortunatly, yes I think I can. He is one of a very small army of seekers of justice.
  • You bet we are on the list, but so are they that think their e-mails are private.
  • I have many (internet) friends in the Middle East. I have little doubt I'm being watched.

That and I vehemently abhore the current regime.

    Scary shit.
  • info = money.

    bottom line.

  • This is giving me bad feelings.
Are we safe in our own homes now?
I know I am on a list because I am a Peace Activist in Maine. There is a lawsuit going on about Quaker Peace activists being on the watch list. I am pretty sure I am on it because I was part of the protest group. When I flew to Florida a few years ago when my father was dying I was singled out both ways on the round trip as a person who was given the random extra search to..could be coincidence but I'm not sure these days. Is this right? I am a middle class wife of a small city lawyer, a mother of two beautiful children, a "housewife"....hate that word but right now I am unemployed so that sounds worse.. I am an activist and not religious person and I question the Bush government..so I feel like that might be cause for myself to be singled out in the USA. This is not right for anyone including myself to feel threatened. Sometimes I feel like my email and phone conversations are not safe. It is disgusting. It might be in our minds but why should we even be wondering.

  • I bet we're all on a list of some sort....

    Which is good.

The government should have a healthy fear of its citizens.

  • The integrity, security and safety of our national telephone and Internet communications systems must become a major concern as we look forward to Change in November.

Private government contractors monitor all U.S. telephone and Internet communications.

Some of these private contractors are corrupt or have weak internal controls.

If a competitor or foreign government wants your trade secrets, your R & D plans, your bid details or your confidential communications, they can hire a well placed private contractor to get them.

60-70% of the National Security Agency and the CIA's National Clandestine Services budgets are paid to private contractors.

See http://HappinessHacker.com for links to respected sources that document private government contractor concerns.

Are all these private security contractors honest and honorable?

The War on Terror is a $100+ billion industry, the people and organizations profiting from it will not let go easily.

Can we have fair and free elections in November if our telephone and Internet communications systems are compromised?
  • We need not only our wretched government to have a healthy fear of its citizens, but for these corporations to have a healthy fear of their customers. We pay them for service and they consequently use our faithfulness to their brand as a means by which they can take thoughtless advantage of us. Big Business is actually consuming consumers by devoting a substantial percentage of their ungodly high profits off their customers to pervert justice by writing legislation that permits them to abuse our writes and thwart justice with impunity. We need to screw these big telcos by using any service but theirs until they're once again regulated.

Face it, until we repealed regulation that contrained a single company from becoming the global corporate monopoly ATT has become just since Dumya and Cheney Vader stole office, all the baby bells existed to offer them fierce competition. There were still enough laws on the book to deter such flagrant violations of the citizens' rights to privacy then. But now, our government is little more than the enforcement arm of unregulated global business. Our government datamines us in the name of national security only to make us prey to the various industries of Big Business.
