What is the 9pm watershed? What is it for? And how does it affect what we see on telly? Sam Delaney finds out in a rather peculiar experiment...

  • This is a hugely biased "documentary" where the maker asks lots of leading questions to back up his hypothesis.

I do not think that censorship is a good idea in any sense but I do think there should be guidelines and age-related restrictions on things that have adult themes.

The maker of this film says that the boy can watch all manner of violence and gore in the form of computer games but these had an age restriction on them as well - though this was clearly ignored as much by the film-maker as by the boy's parents.

When programmes or films that have been on TV are sold in the same format as games (ie on DVDs) they will have age restrictions. The equivalent when being broadcast on television is the watershed.

I do not see a problem in the watershed and I certainly don't see its existence as a reason why TV is "being left behind". If anything there should be greater regulation (though not censorship) of the internet so that it catches up with TV.

  • Their hypocrites! selling these games and yet saying their trying to protect kids? protect kids my ass! i bet they get goverment money by imposing these meaningless impositions on people.
well how do you regulate the internet? by blocking sites? sounds like censorship to me. ask china, they know all about "regulation" of information.

  • Who are hypocrites? Meaningless impositions? I don't understand your point Pcfillintent.

As for Chinese style censorship of the internet - or any source of information - that's a bad thing. I am opposed to censorship in any form for adults. Does that mean that I have to have the same opinion for 9 year olds?

Regulation should come in the form of age restrictions on adult sites, whether they have violent content or sexual content, restricting what young people can see (as in the TV watershed) is a good thing. Censorship is a bad thing. There is a difference.

  • This kids parents obviously don't care what their kid sees on the internet,i'm all for free speech, but someone mutilating themselves should not be viewable by a kid, never mind anyone else
