US congress approved funding for clandestine operations against Iran?

Someone, PLEASE, tell me I a reading this report wrong. Basically, it says that the USA-CIA is funding certain groups in Iran to promote a regime change. These include certain members of one group Jundallah, also known as the Iranian People's Resistance Movement, according to former CIA officer Robert Baer.

"Council on Foreign Relations analyst Vali Nasr described it to Hersh as a vicious organization suspected of links to al Qaeda."

Suspected links to Al Qaeda! WTF! I know the American, trustworthy, and 100% correct in their investigations CIA has to know this. This article also suggests that Bush is going to give more money to them. OMG, what is this world coming to?

Here is the article, or just click the link to see that it matches word for word ... except for where I put the words "here's the kicker" to highlight the section stating this. If I am misreading this, please let me know ... one way or another ... let me know! Peace out!

"U.S. congressional leaders agreed late last year to President George W. Bush's funding request for a major escalation of covert operations against Iran aimed at destabilizing its leadership, according to a report in The New Yorker magazine published online on Sunday. The article by reporter Seymour Hersh, from the magazine's July 7 and 14 issue, centers around a highly classified Presidential Finding signed by Bush which by U.S. law must be made known to Democratic and Republican House and Senate leaders and ranking members of the intelligence committees.

"The Finding was focused on undermining Iran's nuclear ambitions and trying to undermine the government through regime change," the article cited a person familiar with its contents as saying, and involved "working with opposition groups and passing money."

Hersh has written previously about possible administration plans to go to war to stop Tehran from obtaining nuclear weapons, including an April 2006 article in the New Yorker that suggested regime change in Iran, whether by diplomatic or military means, was Bush's ultimate goal.

Funding for the covert escalation, for which Bush requested up to $400 million, was approved by congressional leaders, according to the article, citing current and former military, intelligence and congressional sources.

Clandestine operations against Iran are not new. U.S. Special Operations Forces have been conducting crossborder operations from southern Iraq since last year, the article said. These have included seizing members of Al Quds, the commando arm of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, and taking them to Iraq for interrogation, and the pursuit of "high-value targets" in Bush's war on terrorism, who may be captured or killed, according to the article.

But the scale and the scope of the operations in Iran, which include the Central Intelligence Agency, have now been significantly expanded, the article said, citing current and former officials. Many of these activities are not specified in the new finding, and some congressional leaders have had serious questions about their nature, it said."

HERE'S THE KICKER -

"Among groups inside Iran benefiting from U.S. support is the Jundallah, also known as the Iranian People's Resistance Movement, according to former CIA officer Robert Baer. Council on Foreign Relations analyst Vali Nasr described it to Hersh as a vicious organization suspected of links to al Qaeda.

The article said U.S. support for the dissident groups could prompt a violent crackdown by Iran, which could give the Bush administration a reason to intervene. None of the Democratic leaders in Congress would comment on the finding, the article said. The White House, which has repeatedly denied preparing for military action against Iran, and the CIA also declined comment.

The United States is leading international efforts to rein in Iran's suspected effort to develop nuclear weapons, although Washington concedes Iran has the right to develop nuclear power for civilian uses."

  • Just arrest him and hospitalize him to protect himself and the American people.
    Why?

I think there's too much lead in the water pipes at the white house and this is driving him crazy! He needs close observation and medical care.
He's suffering from illusions of grandeur and thinks he's the Saviour.
Moreover, he thinks he can take over the world!!

Someone please at least check them water pipes (maybe the paint too!)

At least in the hospital under observation, he can think he has the staff under his command and that the hospital is the last and final hold out in the world.

The medication can really help a man like him.

  • Its worse than you think. At root, Al-qaeda is a CIA-MOSSAD funded organization.

  • This really shouldn't suprise anyone. The CIA, etc. will finance whatever thugs for whatever immediate short-term goal is right before them. The long-term effects, the betrayal of American ideals never effect their decisions.

  • From Wikipedia: Though there is no evidence that the CIA directly supported the Taliban or Al Qaeda, some basis for military support of the Taliban was provided when, in the early 1980s, the CIA and the ISI (Pakistan's Interservices Intelligence Agency) provided arms to Afghans resisting the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, and the ISI assisted the process of gathering radical Muslims from around the world to fight against the Soviets. Osama Bin Laden was one of the key players in organizing training camps for the foreign Muslim volunteers. The U.S. poured funds and arms into Afghanistan and "by 1987, 65,000 tons of U.S.-made weapons and ammunition a year were entering the war".[16]

    - So back in the 90's it was a great, GREAT weapon sale.

So what im trying to say is, that may it not be strange to you that the US is funding terrorist organizations. They have done that all the time. They did it all over LatinAmerica:
    Pinochet in Chile.
    Or the Contras in Nicaragua
    Or the Guerrilla in Guatemala
    Or Noriega in Panama
And so on. If you go to every country and read their history, you will notice that in times were there was a 'coup, the US had always been involved. Including the School Of Americas.

In the Middle East, the story repeats itself.

  • Yes this is what the CIA does with Presidential approval. They are doing it in Venezuela, Cuba, and where-ever a country says no to the US. Instead of finding a peaceful solution, the CIA finds some a-hole that is greedy and power hungry enough to take over the country. Remember these CIA bastoid dictators: Sadam, the Shah (not Shaw), and Pinochet?

  • Of course the CIA have been funding terror organisations for years. Who do you think trained and armed Osama Bin Laden in the first place. It's not the first time they have tried to fund and create a coup in Iran they did it in the 1950's when Mossadeq was overthrown and the puppet government of the Shah was put in place, and why? OIL.
Mossadeq nationalised the Iranian oil industry and took it back from the British and US who had been raping it for years so what did they do create and fund a coup that put them back in control of Irans oil till the Cultural revolution happened and now they want it back again.
The Cia and Mossad are the biggest terrorist organisations out and there is good reason to believe the 911 attacks were done by Mossad(Israeli intelligence.

Sounds like these peeps are a bunch of hit men as well as terrorists. Doesn't Italy still have an arrest warrant for 12 of the USA agents?

  • How did we ever let it get this bad? I have been living in Europe for fifteen years now, watching in disbelief, see history repeat itself in a truly grotesque ways. But my countrymen seemed blind, are your eyes open now?

Can we ever find our way back to even a Republic. This is starting to look more and more like Rome in 150 AD.

  • Dear Larznero...

What is his name? I dont read arabic and would love a translation.... could you post one please?

    Also,
    economically speaking...
so 15 or twenty years a go we were around the 92 oil crisis, as well as a few surge and dips in our economy. We fund a group that can potentially destabilize an entire region. Its kind of like this...
an old western american town sheriff is about to get fired because his towns to damn peaceful. So he calls up his brother who happens to be a bit of a clepto or a pickpocket or maybe just not to nice, maybe even just in need of some gambling money, who knows or cares, and then asks him to get someone else to start attacking the relatively peaceful towns around his as well as his... He provide money, assistance, and probably a bit of fun training, and then waits..
The scapegoat does his part dies in the process and then the sheriff gets a raise a bigger territory and some glory for cleaning up a mess he really started in his living room.
    Now... realistically.... if it works...
    barring the human death toll
barring the blunt detriment to the emerging adults want to be peaceful
barring the destruction any level of violence causes

its a way to selfishly grow, continue, and protect the things in your life you value...

Everything has two sides I guess and Im getting caught up in the devils advocacy HOWEVER what I was getting at is..

sounds to me like this war made certain people awfully fat and happy....
it makes a buttload of sense to try a similar thing again...

Tell me again how the "good christian" conservatives are the moral majority and know what's best for everyone in the world. How is it these people are not totally ashamed of themselves. The self-rightious seam to be beyond reproach.

  • One day freedom fighter. Terrorist the next. Sht like this always happens.

This picture was taken during carters administration....

We change dictators in different countries all the time. I know someone has a comprehensive list of all the different countries we appointed leadership to. Come on, cough it up.

Has anyone seen the film Persepolis (based on the comic books by.Marjane Satrapi). It has the Iranian Revolution serving as the backdrop to the story. It's a good film, but according to it, it says that the Brittish government stopped a democracy from forming there.

"Why be president, when you can be emperor?" the british ask the prospective Shah.

"You give us the oil, we'll take care of the rest!" he goes on.

Don't know if it's true though.

  • Why is this so surprising? funding movements in order to disrupt a country's initiatives is not new to the United States.

Furthermore, it's not new at all for many other countries in histories past.

Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I would suppose that whether there is a better way is situational. But if it were up to me, I can't say I wouldn't consider that option considering it's not only saving American casualties but anyone we consider a friend.

Think about it, if a country has dirty work to be done and lives will be lost, why not have an enemy do it for you?

    Just something to think about...

  • There is one other thing we could hope for.

    INDIVIDUAL ENERGY INDEPENDENCE!

I am visualizing and meditating on the discovery of an advanced new battery technology that can out put several thousand jewels of electricity, let's say enough to power a car for 10 years or a home for 5 years without recharging, designed and developed by some underground nerd techs who take their invention to the public and become a power house like Google. People flock to buy their battery packs to power everything and no one has to buy oil or coal energy anymore.

Lets say the battery works using the power generated from a mini big bang contained within a magnetically sealed chamber that generates massive amounts of electrons flowing out of the chamber through special nano tube conductors. The amount of energy and the length of time the energy can flow depends upon the size and amount of matter/anti-matter in the matrix.

Of course if you tried to open the batter to reverse engineer it, you and everything within say 1000' would be utterly vaporized into a mini black whole; so no one would dare mess with them.

And the company is setup so that everyone who buys one of these batteries becomes an automatic stockholder. You might pay $20K for such a battery but with the profit sharing over time, your battery will pay for itself.

    How does that sound?

  • when are the people we elect or sometime select begin to act in our best interest? are we not tired of making up threats (enemies) in order for Halle burton, G.E., Dupont,
