Spain beats Germany to win Euro 2008 title

Spain finally ended their 44-year wait for a trophy when Fernando Torres's exquisite first-half goal gave them a deserved 1-0 victory over Germany in a fast and furious Euro 2008 final on Sunday.

Spain, appearing in their first final since 1984 and seeking only their second trophy following their 1964 Euro success on home soil, were worthy winners as their crisp passing, wonderful technique and defensive discipline left Germany flailing.

Torres's goal after 33 minutes was also fit for a final as he showed all the speed, determination and quality of finish that summed up his team's whole campaign.

    But seriously, they deserved it. They commanded the ball throught the game and were rarely on the defensive for an extended period of time. All around a well played game on their part.

  • The Torres goal was fantastic, he didn't manage to get it under control on the first touch and had to round the defender to beat Lehmann to the ball.

    Spain often imploded in the latter stages of revious competitions but this time they played with flair till the end.

    Will Villa come to North London or go to the Mersey,,,,?

  • Finally a tournament where the best team won! Spain have been awesome and by far the better team in every game they have played. They pass and move crisply and it is a joy to watch.

    Given that the last time they won anything was 1964 and the last time England won the World Cup was 1966 could South Africa 2010 be our year?
