US preparing the battlefield in Iran, while Iran digs 320,000 graves

The Bush administration has launched a "significant escalation" of covert operations in Iran, sending U.S. commandos to spy on the country's nuclear facilities and undermine the Islamic republic's government, journalist Seymour Hersh writes in an new article for The New Yorker. Hersh told CNN that Congress has authorized up to $400 million to fund the secret campaign.

Iran isn't taking the threat lightly. Iran's parliament speaker, Ali Larijani, warned other countries against moves that would "cost them heavily." In comments that appeared in the semi-official Mehr news agency Sunday, an Iranian general said his troops were digging more than 320,000 graves to bury troops from any invading force with "the respect they deserve."

"Under the law of war and armed conflict, necessary preparations must be made for the burial of soldiers of aggressor nations," said Maj. Gen. Mirfaisal Baqerzadeh, an Iranian officer in charge of identifying soldiers missing in action.

  • Oh no! I bet the U.S. has covert operators in a lot of other countries too.

  • I hope this happens after July 20, so I'll already be in Europe before the draft starts.

  • Great ! now we have do deal with another war, i hope that this war never happens and if so Russia and China will might back up Iran further escalating the conflict.
This conflict might lead to World War 3 and we'll get the blame for starting it...AHHH GREAT !!
  • World War III? We'll just have to find a way to blame Germany!

How the hell do you know if there's an escalation of covert ops? They're covert!

Though I don't agree with going to war with Iran at any level, of course, there's covert ops going on all over the Middle East.
  • blame Canada! blame Canada!

  • Why is Seymour Hersh writing publicly about covert operations??!?!?!

  • Oh fuck. What's the age range for the draft? Eighteen to something else. I hope it includes 29 and a certain somebody I know of gets drafted, if this shit happens.

  • what the hell!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • We cannot let this happen, if we do we are looking at 6$ a galon for gas.
Maybe this is why Saudis increased their oil production...

  • It's all bullshit. No one is going to start world war three and there will be no draft. Everyone knows Bush and Cheney are deranged and I don't think even the American public is dumb enough to let these war mongers be forced into attacking iran because of pressure from the Jews who are deathly affraid of Iran having a nuke and being on a level playing field. I really don't think this will happen. Russia will not stand idelly by and let this happen the UN will not sanction this and China may finally raise the dragon. America does not have the Army to support this and can't even supply troops for Afghanstan let alone Iraq and I know if America tried to reinstate the draft for such a evil and greedy war they would meet alot of resistence. Viet nam was a good example of trying to send people to illegal wars. Bush and Cheney must be thrown out of office. These men are very evil and would try anything to remain in power including starting another war. The people of America better wake up and congress better wake up before these madmen do something very dumb. These two idiots must be stopped. Maybe we should let them go and then maybe we would have a revolution right here in America. America is pretty fed up with these two idiots and thier cronies. Somehow they must be removed from power.

  • Would someone please explain to Georgie that using a nuclear bomb on people is quite a lot different from shoving a firecracker up a frogs butt and setting it off. Why the Hell didn't his mother get him counseling for his sadism? Was it because she was drunk?

  • Iran wants nukes , and it should . if i were in charge of Iran i'd want to obliterate Israel ASAP.

  • We already have a complicated situation with Iraq, thanks to Bush. I honestly don't think we can handle another war in that region. It's like he's trying to stir up the beehive as much as he can before he gets out of office. It would be a terrible move for our country and I don't know how our troops would ever be able to come home.

  • Damn that grave digging is a nice piece of psychological warfare! I must congratulate whoever thought of it. Everything about it says, "Hey, we respect you, but we're not afraid to kill 320,000 of your forces".
    Dmitri_Molotov
  • i like how we say that they are the crazy ones yet we are gonna be the ones to start dropping bombs!

    just a thought.
    RoBot_rOcKer
  • really , the US is being "considerate" in an old fashioned way ( i.e . "chivalry" ) by not just going ahead and nuking Iran .

  • I seriously wonder whether the current administration would dare to start another war. On the other hand, they have little to lose.

A war with Iran would be a nice gift to McCain if he would become president. It would also be a nice way of getting Obama into a whole lot of trouble before he even begins, if he were to become president.

  • I don't understand CNN, and many other outlets.

Do they think that Iranians don't read CNN.com?
You don't think they may take these articles seriously?
I swear, its like nobody even bothers anymore.

Why would you announce to the world, that the U.S. is running covert missions in Iran?

I can't even think straight, these people!. wtf

  • Think about that money...

Disturbing statistic, as of 2006 (the last time I saw this stat updated) the US was spending approx $390 billion dollars on military around the world. Our closest competitor was Russia at approx. $60 billion around the world.

    Can you say modern Imperialism????

  • So the U.S. isn't entering from Iraq, but Afghanistan, the OTHER country bordering Iran that we've invaded in the past 10 years... anyone else see the trend that maybe, just maybe this is some kind of Middle eastern takeover ploy? I mean hell, theyve got lots of oil and via media manipulation, it's easy to make them look like the bad guys. We still fear what we don't know. This scares the shit out of me. How can the U.S. get away with this? Hypocritical justification... let's go in a spy on their weapons programs while we continue to build up ours. Pathetic. REALITY CHECK PLEASE
    elisealcyone
  • p.s. - Where's this $400 million coming from?

This is what allows this shit to continue and worsen. Americans kept in the dark about every move made. I thought this was a democracy. Hello... I DO NOT APPROVE. I'd like my vote now, Mr. President. It's time to make this the war we, as a people, prevented.

I'm so pissed. Tell me you are too.
    elisealcyone
  • Well, put one plus one together and it equals two. The Bush Administration has been planning this for a long time....
    DennisJohnson
  • Man...we need to get Bush and Cheney back to the looney bin.
    DennisJohnson
  • unfortunately, my friends, democrats said take the money and run to iran. I doubt bush leaving will change this at all. as with most problems, this one needs to be examined from many angles, and simply blaming one person or a few is exactly what they want you to do. Don't get me wrong, I don't think gwb could run a hot dog stand, I'm just saying there's a lot more to it than that.

I can't stand the thought of yet another war with yet another country for reasons I don't understand (though I HIGHLY doubt they are reasons I would approve of in the first place).... our motives are so horrible and selfish and yet we look like the savior sacrificing ourselves on the cross of insanity thanks to good old media manipulation and sheeple susceptibility. wow, im ranting. respond.

  • I have no reason to doubt the accuracy of the Hersh article. I do have doubts that either of the candidates or any of our "elected" representatives will bother to tell the American people that they will be expected to pay for yet another loser war.

Where do these politicians think they will get the money from our bankrupt country?

We have lost every war since and including Korea.

You would think that the politicians would get it by now.

I wonder how much we have spent to maintain an army in S. Korea for the past fifty years?
