Meanwhile a prominent Palestinian journalist has been hospitalized after being strip-searched and assaulted by Israeli officials at a border crossing between Jordan and the West Bank. The journalist, Mohammed Omer, was on his way back to Gaza after visiting London where he won the prestigious Martha Gellhorn Prize for journalism. Omer is the Gaza correspondent for the Inter Press Service and has been a guest on Democracy Now. According to Omer, Shin Bet officials interrogated him, pointed an M16 gun at his face then forcibly removed all of his clothing. Then officials pinned him to the floor and searched every cavity of his body. He began vomiting and fainted. He was then dragged on the floor with his head banging on the ground. He woke up in a Palestinian hospital.

There is really nothing much to say about this. It's just Fucked Up.
-
If this can happen to a prominent journalist, then God know's how your average Palestinian must feel... may God help us all in being just.
-
And they wonder why people are so angry with the nation of Israel.
-
I just wish security officials would run back round checks before taking any decisive actions like those that would later be seen as barbaric and violent.

Israel is a very violent and evil nation. Evil begets evil anyone would think that after all the Jews have been through they would have the wisdom and the enlightenment to treat people with respect and dignity instead of being a constant treat to world peace and spreading violence. The wolrd will get sick and tired (I have been for years}of hearing about Israels violence and sooner or later Israel will be brought to justice for it's crimes against innocent people. I hope the same will happen to Bush and his crew.

I appreciate your passion i guess, but there is another side to this thing. I swear.

I don't understand why Israel would do this to a prominent journalist. Journalists are the in between during conflicts and true journalists try to tell both sides of the story. I hope this man can remain objective after something like this, but I wouldn't blame him if he couldn't.
-
because the majority of the news industry is bought by murdoch, because the success of fox pandering to the right through lies severely decreased the ratings of the other news networks forcing them to edit what they air so as to keep an audience. this would be seen too much as anti-israeli hatred by leftwing media. it's kinda like a foul in the box in the eurocup, if it doesn't draw blood, it's not going to be called.

sounds like a standard trip through US airport security to me...

wow! thats some really one sided reporting. where are the int'l independent news references on this story? this isn't news. its ANTI-ISRAEL propaganda.
You want to compare Israel to the way things are done in America? If Mexico were Gaza, and Mexico had terrorist snipers hiding in civilian homes killing American soldiers on their own soil (reminds me of the former UK conflict in Northern Ireland) trying to reclaim American soil as Mexican, there would be overwhelming pressure from the US people to just nuke Mexico.
This isn't a simple problem. But from the look of many of these comments, many are from 'simple people'.
I wish you well. Next time please stick to reporting the news. -
Here's the Reuters story on the alleged beating of the Palestinian journalist.
"They wanted to humiliate me. I collapsed in tears ... I had to throw up twice and I fainted twice," Omer said. "They asked silly questions about everything I had done during my trip to London and Europe and they made fun of me." -
How horrible! Thanks JimmyP for the post and Thanks Matt for the other news agency story to quell the people that think this is a one sided story. Moreover, What are some people doing posting on Current if they rely so much on Murdoch, FOX and the rest.
The need a real life.
Definitely some lobby action going on here. Their voices are slowly becoming less relevant as the truths come out. The Israeli government, imo is one of the most evil, blood thirsty, selfish and greedy governments in the history of man and the truth is coming out finally because of the Internet and because of the bravery of journalists and media like Current.
Ride on! Keep the TRUTH coming everyone!-

The only thing I can say to the journalist is to endure and remember. You are there for a very good reason and the information you bring to us is so important.
-
The global shift that must happen needs to reach everywhere. There should be no way anyone would dare touch these people. Or anyone for that matter. There should be put into place some kind of safe guard a person can get especilaly if their press, or working on something important. A letter from someone saying "Do not touch this person, or there will be penalty".
Beyond that.. all we can do is pray that all the bad people get an internal soul make over in the next few years. love and light

Sometimes we need to be tactful and careful to anything that we do because there are plenty of fake reporters that uses fake identities and did not say the truth of who they are....
I agree to what those Israeli did to that reporter because he is hard headed.... many terrorist act as if they are reporters and left the bombs using their high tech gadgets to sabotage a company nor even to kill those innocent people.
I am not new to this kind of problems, as of now there are many problems that i encountered being a Producer, they did not gave me peace.... i am just telling the truth nothing but the whole truth about my country even this place.... Politicians sent fake reporters to sabotage many border lines. -
Israel denied on Tuesday allegations by a Palestinian journalist that he was abused and injured by Israeli security personnel while on his way home to the Gaza Strip after receiving a journalism award in Britain.
The official said Omer received "fair treatment and no irregular action was taken towards him" during the search.
"At the end of the search, he lost his balance and fell, for some reason unknown to us. A team of medics, an ambulance and a paramedic were summoned and he was transferred for treatment to Jericho," the official said. -
This is hurtful to me. I happen to be a Jew and I am not evil and I didn't hurt anyone. I would not hurt a fly. This situation is very sad but we have not heard both sides. It might be the Israelis it might be the Palestinians or it might be both..maybe they both had bad days and are on each other.
Please don't blame me and my sensitive and peaceful family who happen to be born with Jewish heritage with everything single thing that is done or allegedly done in the name of the government of Israel.
It is the same as the ignorance of people in Europe and they hate teenagers who are traveling for wearing shirts with USA on them. We are hated for that also..that's so ignorant don't you see? These teenagers from the USA do not bomb Iraq...they're kids!-

It's the government of Israel not "the Jews."
The government of Israel deny everything, just like the murder of Rachel Corrie, just like AIPAC employees spying in the Pentagon, just like the USS Liberty. Their violence, arrogance and deceitful nature is pretty sickening considering the fact that we give them billions per year and Americans parrot the bs line "it's the only democracy in the middle east." -
The words are very important., maasanova,.they can easily cut millions of people in one swipe or they can heal and promote peace.
Another point further is that not everything the Israeli Government does is wrong...same as in the USA. Can't blame NYC Police and Fire Department for the work of Bush..they are good hard working people and heroes for the most part...but that's another day
..gotta go run and do my chores.. it's a beautiful day..
.but same point on a different scale..the difference between everything is black and white or shades of gray.
1. Fox "News" and CNN are black and white thinking.
2. Overreacting to Fox News and CNN on Current posts by saying all Jews, Israel and its government are 100% the blame for everything..are black and white thinking.
3. Coming to maturity by realizing that there are other sides to everything..are shades of gray thinking. This is where peaceful resolutions can be born.
I think this is where we should all be but we have a long journey when I read some of the posts here by "Progressives." who don't get it yet. They seem to affiliate all Jews and Israeli government with Bush and Fox News...not so-

wow. the mainstream US media would never ever report this. atleast not fairly they wouldn't. if you dare to go on American television and even hint that Israel has ever done anything wrong you get chastised as if you just said Hitler was great or something. You can really see who controls television and money in this country.

The occupartion has to stop. We must put as much resources, effort, and money into rebuilding Palestine ans we are into rebuilding Iraq. Israel can not be trusted to handle this issue. There is too much hatred on both sides.
-
this is an awful story. but yes, there is probably another side to it. having said that: i searched the Jerusalem Post, but i couldn't see any coverage of it.
i find it unfortunate that discussions about this issue turn so quickly into hotheaded rhetoric. -
watch this comment being used hereI hope that this man is doing okay . and i hope it does not deter him from doing more of his work.. and everyone is right, there are two sides to every story But nothing justifies the beating of any man for doing his job
-
I think it's a pity that theres so much distrust between neighbors. Especially when both are sons of Abrhm. and both claim to be the chosen people of God. I mean look at the big picture if your God says to raise that much hell, it's a wonder that the world hasn't went atheist. I'm christian I know we have played our role in the global colonization. But guess what the majority of us learned from those mistakes. But you over there won't be satisfied until you blow each other up. So sad your in my prayers.

it seems like any slight critism of the Israeli government is deemed anti-semetic. What was done to the Palestinian journalist is WRONG... and should not be justified or used to generalize and promote further hatred.
If the incident went the other way around- Palestian officials beat Israeli journalist at border crossing- the story would be all over the media and Palestine would be held accountable ever so harshly... -
This is nothing new. We here more about it because it was a journalist, but sometimes Israeli soldiers take great pride in demeaning the Palestinian people. The residents of Gaza are being punished as a whole for the acts of the few. Limited fuel, medicine, and basic supplies are now the norm. Security is one thing, but this is just HATE!

Is it just me or are the majority of comments from Anti-Israel propaganda pushers?! It reminds me of being in London and Paris where there are huge Arab populations and its 'cool' to be anti-semetic and anti-Israel.
Anyone would think that Gaza has had no options for the last 40 something years. They say a little bit of knowledge is dangerous. The Palestinian cause is not a romantic one, although the struggle is presented this way (that's why the terrorist bombers are revered in Gaza) and I suspect that's why many of you are who are not Palestinian are drawn to it. The Palestinian people could have had their own country recognized many years ago. Instead their leaders have embezzled state funds and not helped their own people. It's a money making machine. Peace does not bring in funds like war and terrorism do. I don't think this is just my take but many Palestinians don't want their own country. They want do destroy Israel first and then have their own country.
Re. the Israeli soldiers. How many of you have been through US immigrations border control? That is tough and individuals have very few rights at the border (no mans land) until they cross through to US soil. Until you clear this area US officers can ask you any number of (humiliating) questions if they choose, strip search you and detain you indefinitely. So why is everyone so surprised that this reporter was stopped and questioned?-

Obviously this is a horrible thing that has happened, but considering the amount of suicide bombings that Palestinians execute within the country, it is justified to an extent. If I was a Palestinian reporter in times like these I would keep my ass as far away from the border patrol as possible. That being said, the dragging him as his head is scraping the ground was unnecessary, they should have let him go freely after strip searching him.
