A simple change to the design of the gallon milk jug, adopted by Wal-Mart and Costco, seems made for the times. The jugs are cheaper to ship and better for the environment, the milk is fresher when it arrives in stores, and it costs less.

I've gone back to glass bottles from the local dairy. Why do we need to ship in milk from across the country, anyway?
-
Always nice to see problems solved through good design.

1. American milk...ugghhhhh its nearly as bad as spanish milk.
2. Why would you buy milk buy the gallon, surely 2 litres at a time is enough? I'd hate to be drinking the end of one of those.-

If it were just wal-mart it would be evil. But since yankee cost-co is involved it is okay.
You yankee's slay me.
God bless big oil that makes those jugs
God bless america -
Looks like that woman is about to pour some milk into an invisible glass.
Either way, I stick to rice milk. -

We are the only species of animal that drinks milk beyond infancy, and from another animal. When an baby animal is misplaced or orphaned or forced it will drink from another animal, but we do it all the time; we're freaks.

well.
my family and i drink about a jug and a half of milk a week.
so i think this is very useful.
milk is good for you. it also tastes good. there are alot of people who do not like milk, but alot do.
so it is good for them to make pretty much everything about it better,
but im going to miss the old jug :'(
lol. -
Mainstream Dairy is rape, and milk is just a marketing ploy.

This is good for those people who still drink milk. I'll have a big glass of soy milk thank you.

Milk is disgusting.
Ugh, why anyone would squeeze the tits of a cow and drink what comes out - is beyond me.-

If you don't drink milk- fine, but seriously how many more negative comments can we build up just because of milk?
You are all scaring the cows....-

Seriously--I thought this was about a redesign of a MILK JUG and not the merits or evils of drinking milk. If anyone actually read the article, they would know that this makes it much more efficient to sell the milk.
Would I be MUCH happier if this milk was rGBH free, totally organic and all of that? OF COURSE! But this is a greener, more efficient way to bottle and sell milk and I for one am all for it. -
I just got two gallons like these from Sam's Club. Really freaked me out when I saw them, but I immediately understood the rationale. Two complaints. They need to make those seals at the top easier too remove. I've seen this problem solved by making half of the seal pull up so that you can get a better grip. Also, the milk doesn't pour well. It spills down the side of the jug and pouring it over cereal is challenging. Add this one to fluorescent bulbs and low water use toilets to the environmentally sound ideas that need a little tweaking.

Very interesting. Kinda looks like you are buying milk in a gas container.
-
Why do people still drink milk... and stop shopping at Wal-Mart for the love of god! I swear...
Stop drinking milk and it wont matter what kind of carton it comes in, you don't need it, you never did and all you are doing is supporting an industry that profits from pain and death. The same goes for Wal-Mart...-

But if you ARE going to drink milk,
1) buy it in the paper carton!
Take the plastic out of your life!
2) And make sure the milk does not have
bovine growth hormone in it,
because it raises the level of pus in the milk.
ewwwwww.-

I concur with braaaain. This isn't about the product, it's about the package. We need to encourage more efficient packaging of all products. Also jawnybnsc had a relevent comment. We aren't going to be able to change everything overnight but we have to keep making the baby steps until we get to the point where we need to be. Every step we take toward taking the strain off of our over taxed natural resources does nothing but help. This will probably date me but I can still remember when the litterbug campaign started. It seemed like such a small thing at the time but I cannot imagine where we would be today without it. Not only for the enviromental impact but the level of awareness it raised.

Milk Carton 2.0: Don't believe the hype ... This lame iteration isn't even recyclable.
C'mon people! Any solution that involves more plastic than before isn't a solution at all. -
A gallon of milk??
I'm miffed at how any family can get through a gallon of milk when they used to get through the glass-bottle-a-day delivered by the nice whistling milk man.
then again, I have a lactose intolerance.. -
A square would be better, packing efficiency.

havent drank milk myself in over a decade (strict veg.) but considering, is a step forward. -
Bunch of idealistic idiots. A family of five, with good diet of milk and cereal and cooking, goes through a gallon a milk in mere three days. Get off your unsustainable high horse and yuppie ways. If you choose to have glass bottled milk, or home made soy delivered, make a market for it becomes a business.
And it is not any harder to pour.-

this is god because it uses less plastic, but we dont need milk to live, since we were children weve been told we need it to grow and be strong. humans are the onl king that drink another animals milk, and milk is from a sweat gland. i say no to milk in general and there would be less waist that way
-
well wal mart has already manage to take over all of america, why not milk containers?
