The Organic Trade Association (OTA) today filed a legal complaint against Ohio's Department of Agriculture, challenging as unconstitutional an "emergency" rule seeking to prevent labeling that tells a consumer whether the cows were treated with rBST, the synthetic growth hormone manufactured and sold by Monsanto under the brand Posilac(R). The lawsuit represents a determined effort not only to protect the consumer's rights to receive truthful information about how organic milk and dairy products are produced, but also to protect the rights of organic dairy farmers and processors to communicate truthfully with consumers.
"The Organic Trade Association firmly believes that consumers have a right to know, and want to know, about the products they purchase, and organic farmers and processors have a right to communicate with their consumers regarding federally regulated organic production practices," stated Caren Wilcox, executive director for the OTA. Attorney Randall J. Sunshine, a partner at Liner Yankelevitz Sunshine & Regenstreif LLP, is representing the OTA in this matter.
The federally mandated USDA National Organic Standards prohibit the use of hormones to promote growth or increase production, genetically engineered organisms (GMOS), antibiotics and toxic, persistent pesticides and have a rigorous system for inspection, certification and verification which protects consumers from false claims. In issuing its rule prohibiting organic products from being labeled "produced with milk from cows that have not been treated with synthetic growth hormones", the State of Ohio, however, has essentially chosen not to recognize the federal Organic Foods Production Act (OFPA).
In a time of unprecedented food and fuel costs, and following a year in which over 3000 of the nation's dairy farms shut their doors, the State of Ohio has stepped in to further exacerbate small dairy farmers' problems. For those farmers who have chosen to not use rBST on their cows, and who were finding new and growing markets by marketing their milk as no-rBST or organic, Ohio has passed an "emergency" rule which will hurt the farmers' ability to convey to consumers how they produce their milk.
Monsanto was the driving force behind getting FDA approval for rBST and then turned its substantial resources towards lobbying the Ohio Department of Agriculture for this new "emergency" rule.
~~~~~~~~~~
Monsanto is even stronger than the Federal government. They can put their lobbying weight behind a government agency to get a rule changed that clearly puts the consumer's right to disclosure and their health at risk. This isn't only unconstitutional, this is criminal. However, all Monsanto cares about is profit.
This is redicuous. My state government represents Monsanto and does not represent me.
Organic Consumers Association: More recent news about Posilac and Monsanto's bullying of state legislatures.
From the site:
Monsanto has been lobbying state legislatures and departments of agriculture around the country to harass dairies that won't use Posilac. Monsanto wants to take away dairies' right to tell consumers they're rBGH-free. Please go to the following OCA state action centers to learn more and take action:
Missouri
Kansas
Ohio
Pennsylvania
I am so sick of Monsanto. They are a menace to society.
They keep forcing people to indirectly consume their poisons and not let people know they are consuming them. They are really evil. -
It is absolutely outrageous to me how any one company can have so much influence over state govts. and media with the power to sue farmers who refuse to use it! This hormone is now sold in 49 states and labeling is not required. Evil is right.
This is so transparent.
Obviously not labeling the products we consume , is clear evidence that Monsanto is up to no good.
I read anywhere from 75% up to 85% of consumers in USA want to have their food labeled with information such as this. Yet, who gets their way? Monsanto.
What is wrong with this picture? -
They are so huge and involved in controlling our milk, our food, and our water for starters. Can they even be stopped? The best we can hope for for now is to get truth out to as many people as possible of their machinations and deceptions and hope they find a way to get in touch with their state legislatures to stop this if they can... and then boycott their products. Hitting them in their wallet is what we will have to do.
I agree JanforGore, I have been thinking about trying to start something like that.
If we don't act soon, all of our food is going to be so contaminated that it will be all but impossible to boycott.
Hitting them in their wallet is crucial. -
Monsanto is one of the biggest scum-sucking parasites ingratiating its way further into everyone’s daily life whether you are aware of it or not. Their logo should be the CEO with horns, a pointy tail & carrying a pitchfork on order to prod you into becoming a consumer of their products.
If you haven’t seen the documentary “The Future of Food” (or even "The Corporation") yet, I strongly urge you to do so. If I didn’t know that their goal of global food manipulation, distribution & what seems ultimately, complete control is perfectly legal, I would have thought this excellent science fiction. This is one badass company so powerful that they have Washington D.C. in their pocket.
Try to shop with as much awareness as possible about who ultimately gets your money, because it’s truly the only immediate defense we have until the right people are in the right positions to stop this evil empire. Be afraid…be very afraid.-
I found this book titled:
Got (genetically engineered) milk?
The Monsanto rBGH/BST Milk Wars Handbook
by
Dr. Samuel Epstein
I like the title, we could use some photos of cows with that horrible mastitis that they get when they are contaminated with the rBGH.
Inside the book it states and I quote:
* rBGH makes cows sick. Monsanto has been forced to admit to about 20 veterinary health risks on its Posilac label including mastitis and udder inflammation.
* rBGH milk is contaminated by pus from mastitis induced by rBGH, and antibiotics used to treat the mastitis.
* rBGH milk is contaminated by the GE hormone which can be absorbed through the gut and induce immunological effects.
* rBGH milk is chemically and nutritionally very different from natural milk.
* rBGH milk is supercharged with high levels of a natural growth factor (IGF-1), excess levels of which have been incriminated as major causes of breast, colon, and prostate cancers.
* rBGH factory farms pose a major threat to the viability of small dairy farms. Thus, rBGH
enriches Monsanto while posing risks but no benefits to the entire U.S. population.
me personally? I can't drink milk anymore, the images that were created from my research of these poor cows with the mastitis was just too much for me. I admit I miss milk, but I grew up drinking raw milk. That is considered illegal today. -
Something needs to be done!! This is crazy!!! These people need to go and save their souls, I hope GOD does not have any mercy on people that run this company and layers/politicans that are protecting them when they pass away, because they will not get any punishment while they are here on this Earth.
Manipulating government organizations to hide the serious health risks their product does to consumers so they can continue selling- it should be classified as a crime against humanity. Monsanto is organized crime with all the money in the world and no real threat of being held accountable for their actions.
-
I am horrified by this. I grew up with a father who loved to garden and a local dairy. The things that are added to food today is shocking. But, I need to be more watchful. I'm not kidding; I have the shivers thinking about my lack of understanding of the monumental affect that Monsanto has on our government. What the hell is wrong with this company? Where is their humanity?
-
If this happens, I doubt that its going to be anymore than the cigarette labels, hidden, tiny and soft.
queenofit: Yes, he is the same author of the book in the photo. I recommend reading about this as well. To think the FDA approved this in the US in 1993 and we are still injesting it without the knowledge as to whether our milk has it or not. Imagine how hard they must have lobbied to get the FDA to approve this. The FDA is then also complicit in the affects of it.
I and my family haven't been drinking milk for a while now. I think it may be difiicult but more people would have to really begin to just boycott until full disclosure is given. And yes, I believe there is a picture of a cow with mastitis in the you tube video I posted here. That and I think watching how cows are slaughtered for beef would cure anyone of wanting that nice juicy steak on their barbecue. Just imagine all of the years we have been lied to not only by government but by corporations supposedly there to provide a product to us we think is "pure" all for the sake of the dollar bill.
To think of all the children in this country who drink milk and actually the price of it now and how much people are going through just to be able to afford to buy it to give their children thinking it is the one nutritious food they are getting unknowing of what went into it is surely diabolical on the part of Monsanto. This is a company into pesticides as well that have done damage to our environment (as well as Agent Orange) and seeds that have caused farmers in India to go into such debt that they have committed suicide. And now they are buying up water. Where is the safety net for consumers? This makes me wonder if we really ever had one when it is so easy to buy and bully off.-
cibalin: They don't seem to have any humanity. Knowing what this hormone does to cows and may do to humans and still wanting it undisclosed to be sold to give to children frightens and angers me. With so many children going hungry in this country, now we can't even trust what we may be giving them?
JanforGore,
I just ran across this Congressional testimony in which
Robert Cohen author of: MILK A-Z
(201-871-5871)
Executive Director (notmilkman@notmilk.com)
Dairy Education Board
testified before Congress in 1999, read what he states to congress regarding labeling back then:
ROBERT COHEN TURNS AND ADDRESSES FDA PANEL MEMBERS.
"I'm going to give you some information today, guys.
The greatest controversy in FDA history was the approval process for
Monsanto's genetically engineered bovine growth hormone. We shouldn't
be here today! We should not be in this room and I shouldn't be here
because, in 1994, Congress HAD A BILL that was going to require
mandatory labeling of all foods that were influenced by genetic
engineering. I got my Congresswoman to co-sponsor that bill - 181
congresspeople co-sponsored that bill, and you know what? I learned how
Congress works that year because in 6 months they stalled the bill - 12
members of the Dairy Livestock & Poultry Committee - they stalled the
bill until the 1994 session of Congress expired and the bill died.
I was so upset, I investigated these 12 men and found that collectively
they took $711,000 in PAC money from companies with dairy interests, and
four of the members of the committee took money directly from Monsanto.
Now we've got a lot of political intrigue and some real science here.
We've got science fiction, we've got a combination of John Grisham and
we've got a combination of Stephen King."
I know that we have a hard, hard, almost impossible fight, but this is milk, the product that is sold to families to provide nourishment. At almost 5.00 a gallon in most places today. Stop Buying This Poisoned Food! -
queenofit: Wow, but I am surely not surprised by reading that. This is the crux of many of the problems we face in this country: Politicians caring more about their own standing and wallets than the people. That is why information like this is so important to get out to others.
Millions against Monsanto.
With updated news.
"Oakhurst Dairy has been owned and operated by the same Maine family since 1921, and Monsanto recently attempted to put them out of business. Oakhurst, like many other dairy producers in the U.S., has been responding to consumer demand to provide milk free of rBGH, a synthetic hormone banned (for health reasons) in every industrialized country other than the U.S. Monsanto, the number one producer of the rBGH synthetic steroid, sued Oakhurst, claiming they should not have the right to inform their customers that their dairy products do not contain the Monsanto chemical. Given the intense pressure from the transnational corporation, Oakhurst was forced to settle out of court, leaving many other dairies vulnerable to similar attacks from Monsanto."-
Is there any government entity more useless than the FDA?
-
Why this post has now fallen from 10 to 76708 in the last few minutes with no change in responses or in percentages the same as others there is a mystery to me. So anyone interested in this topic who cannot find it look towards the back where I have a feeling it had a little help getting shoved off the frontpage for some reason.
This is alarming JanforGore, I have been waiting for this to be added to our tv news, and just went to look for it?
What Is Going On???? -
I don't know. But I was looking at milk at the grocery store and found one brand, Tuscan, that stated on the front label there were no growth hormones in it. Just in case anyone reads this and wanted to know of any brands they could purchase that seem somewhat safe. I'm not letting up on this.
"I'm not letting up on this."
Me either, I agree.
I was also at the gro store today, looking at the ice cream.
(I said yesterday that I don't drink milk anymore, but I admit to a little ice cream and also other dairy products.)
10 lbs of milk to make 1lb of cheese....
Anyway, I did not find any regular milk not rBST...grrrrr
Walmart is selling their own brand of GV organic milk it was 3.66 1/2 gallon, that is pretty steep.
Ben and Jerry's has rBST free ice cream (3.00 pt). That was all I could find, but it has corn syrup and that could be GMO'd? I am going to find out. -
I'm checking all labels.... doesn't leave much that is edible we can trust. And when you consider all of the other products we make from milk, it is actually mindboggling... and they know that. .
