Rape conviction rate is plummeting, the sex industry is booming, women's bodies are picked over in the media, abortion rights are under serious threat and top business leaders say they don't want to employ women. It all adds up to one thing ... an all-out assault on feminism. But why?
.. i wish Julie Birchall could chime in on this one.

Meanwhile, on this very site we have people who promote the most sexist portrayal of any given story, fueling the backlash. One example: http://current.com/items/89047995_women_with_long_finge...
And didn't you know? Even women agree with sexist stereotypes! It must be because they're true! http://current.com/items/89018102_all_female_law_firm_d...
Sexism still exists, there is NO QUESTION about it. The backlash against feminism is alive and well, and it is an ugly, ugly thing. One of the saddest results of this is that feminists are portrayed in such a negative light that most women will preface complaints about misogyny with "I'm not a feminist or anything, but..." Why would you be afraid to be a feminist? Everyone, and especially every woman, should be a feminist.-

Completely agree fountaingoats. This is really sad to see how quickly this dropped below the throngs of articles on which fruit is like viagra, how to have better sex, and which celeb is skinnier or hotter.
Sexism is alive and well. Many women still make 80 cents on the dollar, face glass ceilings, and are seen as incompetent if they are aggressive in their career path. I face a lot of sexism and backlash of misogynists in the athletic realm. I am the only female in an all men's soccer league and every weekend I suit up to face another couple hours of harassment. Things like name calling, sexual advances, and physical abuse are pretty regular on and off the field. I didn't start playing there because I'm trying to be a feminist, but wasn't finding a big enough athletic challenge in the women's and coed leagues. However, after facing so many of these guys who get their rocks off trying to intimidate and push me around just because I'm a female, I enjoy it even more when they realize I can and will beat them. Although, no matter how sweet the victory it is sad when I look over and see their little daughters watching on the side lines. I can only hope that they will be given the same encouragement and opportunities that many of my role models gave me.
It's tough though, I wont lie, there are days that I don't want to deal with it anymore and think about switching back to the other leagues or boxing up my cleats entirely. But, I have the support of the 17 other guys on the team, and they are the ones who help pick me up off the ground when the hits get a lil too hard or the words hurt just a lil too much. They're the ones that give me hope that there are men out there standing up with us in the fight.-

The whole idea of a backlash downplays feminism's consistent struggles in the past. I mean, it is not as if we ever actually lived in a 'feminist' society in which all women were treated fairly and equally! Quite the contrary, women have always been discriminated against, so I don't think things are necessarily getting worse, even though they should and could certainly get better much faster!

This was an excellent article, very shocking and very revealing.
Why has the rape rate climbed so high and conviction rates fallen so low in the U.K. over the past 15 years? Or over here in the U.S. for that matter? Really worrying stuff. -
One thing that slows down equal rights is the women that stand back unwilling to shovel shit with the rest of the guys in the barnyard. You have to do your share to get equal piece of the pie. Everyone pays for her.

I concur. Sexism still exists. Personally, I do not think that I have as much of an issue with sexism as other people, though I could be fooling myself. But it boils down to basic stuff. I open doors for people, not just women. If someone gets very mad at me and hits me out of rage, I don't really care if it is a man or a woman, I will hit them back hard with a closed fist.
Equality of the sexes is a wonderful concept, but more men and women need to realize that equality of the sexes means that men and women have the responsibilities and risks, as well as the rights.-

There should be no double standard, ever. The information difference in one chromosome is no excuse to look down on another person, or to handle them in some primitive 'seperate but equal' fashion.

Still a long way to go. Double standards are everywhere. Women still make less, and men are looked at like pedophiles when out with their children, as if fathers aren't supposed to be fathers anymore. We just need to keep hanging on to this movement and fighting for the right to be equal...even though, apparently, we already are.

Sexism and racism will always exist. It just changes in shape and form. Double standards are sitll everywhere. I think its because women are willing to sit on the backburner and many of us have trouble agreeing on a single issue. Then again, the whole nudity/sex industry thing can be debated. Is it exploitation or is it a celebration of the body?
