On the same day the nation elected its first Black presidential candidate, a branch of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, a civil war historical group, raised what they say is the world's largest confederate flag along a major interstate in Tampa, Florida. The flag caused an uproar from some members of the community, who see it as a racist symbol.

  • "94% of people in the South did not own anyone. 94%. And saying this flag just simply represents slavery is not accurate."

  • I FIND THIS VERY,HIGHLY OFFENSIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!
why would you rase a flag like that and say that it doesn't symbolize slavery and hillbilly-ism???!!!???
all those people who did that should be punished just like that guy on the front home page that said he'd be glad to attack the USA!!!!!!
why can't they just let that go???
  • Interesting story...

  • Congratulations to the Tampa Sons of Confederate Veterans! I love the Confederate flag and am very proud of my heritage. Let us not forget the heroic men who fought and died to protect the southern homeland from invasion. I'm from Tennessee and previously had a VERY negative view of Tampa. I thought it was just another secular Yankee stronghold that is similar to Detroit, Newark, etc. Thanks to the Sons of Confederate Veterans - My family is planning to take our next vacation in Tampa this year.We will be stopping by the Confederate park before making our way to the beach. God Bless the South!

  • The confederate flag in question was not the Confederate Flag of the Confederacy Government but a battle standard that was used by the KKK later. In recent years the sons of the confederacy have tried to get the KKK to stop using it.

The problem is that there is too much ignorance particularly coming from northern liberal types who know only a cereal box version of the Civil War.

However on the other hand, the Sons of the Confederacy have got to work hard to ease the tensions of African Americans whose history was strongly impacted before and after the Civil War.

Anway, good pod! Nice interviews and showing different viewpoints without preachign one side or the other - a rarity these days in the media. What we need is unobjective coverage and discourse - not the belligerent attitudes like bixbycanyonbridge.

  • SamuraiDave,

    Good accurate points.

The members of the Sons of Confederate Veterans and the United Daughters of the Confederacy work very hard to promote education & understanding of American history, especially the history of the South. It is our "charge" or mission statement to do so.

The largest obstacle to understanding is the pop media is more interested in creating & reporting "conflict" rather than news. Add to this the many groups, who for profit & self perpetuation aggressively promote conflict, division and a distorted view of both history & society rather than harmony & understanding.

Sad, but welcome to the new millenium!

As for Ms. Williams, who stated she will pay to memorialize all black Confederates presented to her, I will be presenting her documentation with the names of THOUSANDS of Black Confederate Soldiers (mostly derived from state vet's pension records) Lets see if she honors her statement to recognise these vets with a plaque on the Confederate Soldiers monument ($100 per name).

Like an everyday politician (or race baiter) I bet she finds a way to wiggle away from her ignorance and/or commitment.
