RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil - A Brazilian student lost in the Amazon rain forest for six weeks was found by his father, only to die in his arms a short time later, rescue officials said on Tuesday.
Jonathan dos Santos Alves, 18, had been lost in the forest since mid-May, when he became separated from two friends he was hunting with in an area 72 miles north of the city of Manaus.
Fire and rescue department chief Antonio Dias dos Santos told Reuters he had been missing for 42 days.

that is terrible...many blessings and prayers to the friends and family.

That is tragically cruel, his father must have been going out of his mind for 6 weeks, then to have the short relief of seeing his son before he died, must almost be worse than not having seen him at all.
-
That's a b***ch slap by life. Sad.

I give his son a lot of respect though: surviving 6 weeks alone in the Amazon is no mean feat, and It must have been such a comfort to him to see his dad at the end of his ordeal.
-
He must not have been eating and was probably insanely exhausted.
Though the kid passed, I reckon it was some sort of comfort to the father to be able to see his son alive one last time. -
So sad. I'm glad the family did find him so they don't have to wonder.

If he was going to die, I think it was nicer for him and for his father and family that he died in his dad's arms rather than alone in the jungle. My heart goes out to his family.
-
I can't imagine finding a loved one dead.
-
The what if's are probably going to plague the family. I hope the find solace on the fact that he didn't pass away alone.
-
this is so tragic, i can only imagine the desperation of being lost in the forest for 42 days, the only good news is that the family found him and he didn't have to die alone, but instead in his father's arms.

So whats better: finding your dead son or found your son but only to die in your arms?
-
this is so sad--i wonder why he didnt drink the river water and find some plants or animals to eat....
-
Wow if this isnt a tear jerker I dont know what is. Like Neghie said though, at least he had his father by his side...I hope his family finds some small comfort in that.
-
It is a rain forest he was in. He could have drank from the rain that collected on the leaves.
-
I'm amazed he was able to survive the nights in the rainforest, with all of the dangerous animals such as snakes out there with the home advantage.
He was a very brave young man. -
42 days . jesus . a tough kid .
-
BLESS THAT BOY AND HIS FAMILY.
