Devalued Banksy

Apparently the Bethnal Green working mans club is not very happy with this new addition to Banksys Flower piece because it devalues the property where as before the working mans club had added value because it sported an original Banksy. I think this is hugely interesting because Graffiti is not supposed to be about commercial value but expression and somehow this new addition is more expressive and challenging than Banksys work although could not of existed without Banksys first layer. The work is now a conversation between two artists I would like to here Banksys response.
Oh and what about Race Walk Ross Kemp? Can I go?

  • This is the point of street art and what separates it from graffiti and fine art! Interaction!

  • Interesting how one of Banksy's themes is defacing fine art. Now his graffiti is considered fine art, and its being defaced.

  • Yes as a result of this interaction we are no longer left with one of Banksys dumb one liners. Instead we have a dialogue going on concerning the value of street art and the cross over between street art, fine art, celebrity and authorship. Finally Banksy has something really worth discussing.
    Thank you Ross Kemp x

  • If they were that bothered, they should have put a protective screen on it which would have taken it into fine art. Or why not hack of that bit of the wall off and put it inside so nobody can see it!

The difference in calibre of skill and skill amusing. The almost disrespect of messy anonymous scrawl on a pricey Banksy, reiterates the point of Graffiti itself.

Interesting... lets go draw a moustache on the Mona Lisa and see what happens.

  • Whew! Thank goodness for change!
Someone could've driven right up that building!

  • I'm glad it has been de-valued - I somehow suspect generating revenue for the Bethnal Green working men's club was not Banksy's point at all.

    (and racewalk Ross Kemp..?)

  • Politics in art. This is that article about the silly american artist who used pictures of obama's daughters. If you want to get noticed then stand up to the biggest kid on the block. Petty shortcut. Who wants to be an asterisk? an afterthought?

  • Has anyone worked out what the 'Racewalk' part means? I'm getting nothing of significance from Google.

  • I believe it is a competetive sport that involves walking as fast as possible in a very straight upright position.

  • Just to clear things up- we don't care about the supposed value of the Banksy- we have never mentioned anything about it!
We see the side of our privately owned building as a canvas for local artists.
Obviously the 'race walk' addition isn't great- but it's pretty funny how much people are talking about it!
Don't take it too seriously and keep your eyes on that wall!

  • Hey BGWMC!
I am afraid someone did mention something about it and for that reason we have a debate. It is very very very serious mans club, I can't get any sleep over it, I mean I haven't slept for months.
