Next President Should Stand Tall For Civil Liberties

FromThe Blog of the American Constitution Society:

Geoffrey R. Stone, professor of law at the University of Chicago and member of the American Constitution Society Board of Directors, writes in a column for today’s New York Times op-ed page that the next occupant of the White House should address the erosion of civil liberties in America. Stone argues that the nation’s standing as a protector of civil liberties has been “tarnished” by a series of events, including, the suspension of habeas corpus and torture of detainees. One way Stone says the next president could reverse course:

Presidents have a wide range of official advisers. There is a secretary of defense, a secretary of labor, a national security adviser, to name just a few. The next president should create a new executive branch position: a civil liberties adviser. Within the highest councils of every administration there should be a respected public official whose charge it is to defend our civil liberties against all comers.

And, in my opinion:

Department/Secretary of Transparency

Department/Secretary of Peace

Department/Secretary of Poverty

Department/Secretary of Fair Wages

And, please add to this list your idea of what is needed...

  • We need a volunteer president made of a small group of intelligent people......they answer directly to the people.....kind of like it was suppose to be...also no more Congress......a small group called Progress......try voting for it to happen.....let me know how that goes......America does not need a token face for luncheons and grand dining....oh yeah.....one leaves every six months....and is replaced in a rotating forum......if I was not just a spirit I would Love to be part of it.....I could only be a virtual president.......Golden Ruler...Will...........
  • Let's see now. Depending on who wins, the first thing to do would be downsizing Homeland Security.
Next? A full restructuring of the Justice Department at every level.
Then? Well...that'll eat up at least 4 years while the economy continues to unravel.

  • How about dumping the DEA and Homeland Security to make some room for a well-deserved department. Of Peace.

  • Who ever thought we'd have to "ask" for restoration of our civil liberties?

  • great ideas all!

  • Right now the ONLY presidential candidate who has any chance of caring one whit about civil liberties... the ONLY one who is an actual and practicing card-carrying member of the ACLU... is former Congressman (and ex-Republican) Bob Barr of the Libertarian Party. I don't see Obamamania or McStatusQuo coming even close, and in fact there probably could be a debate as to which one of those two would be the LEAST likely to care about civil liberties.

Oh, but that's right, Bob Barr has been declared the "spoiler vote" by the party bosses and the MSM... the same groups that have long declared civil liberties an annoyance.

  • I find that most Libertarian points of view think the rest of the world will think and act exactly in line with how they think. The Libertarian vision tends to forget that all those many different people with all those many different opinions will kinda mess up their Utopian vision. Law is good and useful but we need to hold the keepers of the laws we agree on accountable.

  • Good point, twodee, and, "we need to hold the keepers of the laws we agree on accountable" is very good, ...but first, we have to get the representatives that we elect to actually work toward implementing the laws 'we the people' agree on. We, essentially, are experiencing the old, 'taxation without representation' once again, only now with a different george and with the compliment of a real dick...

These department ideas are excellent. The only one I'd like to add is...

The Department of Revision of Energy - Alternative Means...or DREAM for short...

and maybe the Department of Fearlessness...
