Pentagon fights EPA on pollution cleanup

The Defense Department, the nation's biggest polluter, is resisting orders from the Environmental Protection Agency to clean up Fort Meade and two other military bases where the EPA says dumped chemicals pose "imminent and substantial" dangers to public health and the environment.

The Pentagon has also declined to sign agreements required by law that cover 12 other military sites on the Superfund list of the most polluted places in the country. The contracts would spell out a remediation plan, set schedules, and allow the EPA to oversee the work and assess penalties if milestones are missed.

The actions are part of a standoff between the Pentagon and environmental regulators that has been building during the Bush administration, leaving the EPA in a legal limbo as it addresses growing concerns about contaminants on military bases that are seeping into drinking water aquifers and soil.

  • This is pathetic. What is wrong with us that we would allow a government to have this much power?

  • The government is the biggest problem.

  • at this point in the US the government is actively telling its own people "I don't care what you want, I'm doing it anyways".

    Yay democracy.

  • No doubt, there is a staggering amount of corruption in our government. This administration has definitely made it worse, but it's been growing there for far too long. They certainly don't represent what I want. Do they represent you?

  • Clean up! How simple. Our government sucks.

  • This is no suprise...

Perhaps part of the problem is that the people in charge of our government were little rich kids that had maids and such to clean up after them and they have no idea its possible to clean up after themselves.

I'm starting to think the US's days are numbered. The people are only going to put up with this crap so much more before something happens... Not to mention the rest of the world...

  • It's a lack of leadership.

Right now the Bush leadership is just shrugging their shoulders and saying, "Whatever. I don't give a shit."

It's only human nature to take the path of less resistance and government agencies are no different. I have no doubt the Pentagon and the others could be cleaner and more efficent....but they're lazy. People will do exactly as much as they have to and as little as they can get away with. It's universal throughout the private sector and government. If the leaders don't care, then the underlings don't care either.

Kinda of like the Walter Reed scandal. No one in the Bush Admin. seemed particularly upset about that nor do they seem to be overly concerned with the health of veterans in general! When the TV cameras were rolling, yeah, they pretended to care and made vows to fix the problems, but then went back to doing nothing.

    The leaders set the tone.

If the President and Vice President and key members of Congress made it a priority to manufacture our military equipment in a safe, environmentally sound and efficent manner than, by God, it would be done.

Right now no one anywhere in the key leadership positions really seems to give a shit about anything....aside from wearing a flight suit for photo-ops, shooting friends in the face while duck hunting, ect.

    Will Obama be different?

It would be impossible for any human being to do a worse job, act stupider and show less leadership than George W. Bush. So under those conditions, yes, Obama will be a HUGE improvement.

  • Hmm... Right now, the Pentagon reminds me of a rebellious child refusing the demands of its parent to clean his room.

  • They're killing our country and claiming there's nothing they can do about it; they don't care. This government needs to change. It's out of control.

  • Hey, in all honesty, even if we are angry about this, what can we do? It would be cool to do something about this, but the only thing that comes to mind is flooding their inbox with angry emails. What can be done? Any thoughts people?
