  • Some crazy stuff is about to go down!

  • If the next magnetic "flip the switch" is about to occur, shouldn't we be building more space shuttles?
I'll pitch in a few bucks.
Kinda takes the sting out of all else. Don't it?

  • If it's quick, we'll be okay. If it's more than a few days, hello roasting to death!

  • I always found this magnetic movement of Earth magic! If this planet slow down on its rotation, don't forget to say goodbye to the one next to you!

  • Complete field reversals take around 5000 years to complete, so in short, we wouldn't be fine, being exposed to massive amounts of radiation. Also, we would probably experience multiple locations of aurorae (northern lights) around the world; not just at the poles!

The current south-north magnetic orientation of the Earth's northern and southern hemispheres respectively is changing, with large patches of oppositely magnetised regions appearing over many hundreds of years.

Aside from complete field reversals, which occur on average every 200 000 years, field 'excursions' occur around 10 times more frequently, where the field diminishes briefly, but does not reverse: It may be that we are in one of these excursions, although we are well overdue for a full reversal: it has been 700 000 years since the last one!

In any case, if the decrease in the strength of Earth's field continues at its present rate, the field will start to reverse in about 2000 years, so we're fine anyway: sorry to dissapoint Hollwood...

  • i believe the naturally occurring Grand Magnetic Pole Switch started 150 years ago, when north and south reverses, and should be a thousand year transition.

eventually, toilet bowls will flush counter-clockwise in the northern hemisphere and clockwise in the south.

"A reversal could knock out power grids, hurt astronauts and satellites, widen atmospheric ozone holes, send polar auroras flashing to the equator and confuse birds, fish and migratory animals that rely on the steadiness of the magnetic field as a navigation aid. But experts said the repercussions would fall short of catastrophic, despite a few proclamations of doom and sketchy evidence of past links between field reversals and species extinctions."

  • it' time to prepare for the end.

  • Also, pressrecord, I assume you're joking about the toilet bowl thing: that definetly would not happen.

  • It's called the Pole Shift Hypothesis. It's hopefully nothing to worry about. "They" believe it will end in 2012....yes 2012, if you're a conspiracy nut, like me, you'll know what I'm talking about. The thing is that the North and South Poles have moved in the past and yet nothing has happened.

But a Pole Reversal could have catastrophic effects on the Earth's environment. Global warmer? Natural Disasters? Are they connected?

  • pressrecord, love that graphic. I read the entire article and I am wondering if the warming of the poles is a result of the change or what? It's very interesting.

  • the piece said that it could take thousands of years to change but I thought they were still not sure if it would be over a long time or almost instant.
    Owwmykneecap
  • In that moment of reversal, we lose all gravity and...and...um...

  • Okay, two things...

    (1) How does man and the whole Industrial Society get the blame for this, because any kind of scientific doom-and-gloom story that comes out HAS to find some way of blaming every one of mankind's advances of the past 150-plus years.

    (2) You mean to tell me that the plot to the movie "The Core" isn't just some wild speculation but an actual possibility? If that's the case I'm not going to be waiting around for two space shuttle astronauts, three bickering scientists, and the world's ugliest cybernerd to save the day!

  • This story is very interesting and confusing at the same time!
    shroomfairy
  • Hey, DJMatt2, it actually IS a result of global warming. Melting of ice causes a net shift of mass from the poles to the equator. This slows down the rotation of the earth's crust ever so slightly. The liquid iron core's inertia keeps it moving at the original rate, but shear between the mantle and core rotating at different rates causes turbulence. This turbulence disrupts the geodynamo, resulting in a long period of low magnetic field strength overall and chaotic field patterns with mini north and south poles occurring all over the globe. Eventually the geodynamo reestablishes itself. There is a 50% chance that it will end up north and 50% south. In the meantime we can expect to lose our van Allen radiation belts. Aurorae might be a normal thing anywhere on the planet.

  • The depletion of oil may be playing a role here, too.
    Just sayin'.

  • 2012 pole shift?
Could this be the early signs?
Many different things lead to that year being the end.
I dont fully believe but i dont discredit the ancients, bible( armageddon ), and scientists, who all agree that a significant change will happen in the earth.

Either way live it up until that day. Enjoy Life!!
Dont get all caught up in saving the world. Just Enjoy your time here instead of stressing on things you want to but cant change! ( G.W )

  • The best way to prepare for 2012 is to prepare your mind by seeking consciousness, prepare your body by living healthy, and prepare your spirit by forgiving and letting go of fear.

  • The fluxuations of the magnetic field that we are currently seeing are much lower than what it has done in the past.

The 10% decline since a few decades ago doesn't mean reversal is imminent, however because the field is increasing and decreasing all the time, and contrary to popular belief, the magnetic field doesn't completely vanish.

Think about it, early human beings (homo erectus) survived many reversals, so for us to panic over it is unnecessary. They obviously didn't go extinct because of the shifts because we wouldn't be here if that was the case.

  • How do we know that the earth hasn't always been this way? why should it stop on our account?

  • Um, is this going to be one of those things were babies will mutate? If so, can I have superpowers? If so, should I use them for good, or for awesome?

  • We're all gonna die!!!!
  • seriously......................as if global warming wasn't enough!
  • Somewhere there is a guy sitting on a warehouse full of compasses that were mis-manufactured in that N and S were reversed. He is seeing a glimmer of an idea...

  • i've heard about this! it happens every few million years and its overdue apparently. i don't think anything bad will happen. maybe your iphone might stop working for a few hours...

  • the toilet bowl thing is true

  • The pole shift was prophesied in American Indian prophecies.

The earth is a living organism. Like our bodies, the earth needs its oil and minerals to function. There are consequences to our actions. Each decision we make can be a choice to bring us back into right relation with the earth and all the beings with whom we share our home.

  • SPF 5000! No worries here! Nothing can be done. Maybe we burn, maybe we don't. I'm one pale motha! So I burn either way. I sometimes call it bubble skin. Space junk could fall from the sky, birds and bees nav systems might be off, Bermuda Triangle could take over the seas. Who knows? Head far north or far south and take in natures show. This happened long before we were here and will continue to happen long after we are gone.

  • I'm feeling those magnetic fluctuations...so there are forces we can't control! Nature has to go all dominant on us.

  • The toilet bowl thing is false. The direction of rotation of water going down a drain would only change if the direction of earth's rotation reversed.

  • Over time, the more I've learned about 12/21/2012 Winter Solstice, doomsday or singularity, the more attention I have paid to this compelling theory, especially the Mayan calendar. If you start looking at all of the scientific studies & natural disasters around world individually, there seems to be quite a bit happening all at once. In addition to the rising frequency of these disasters, the intensity has also increased, adversely affecting more & more people on a daily basis at a greater overall expense. Now consider the bureaucracy, time & available resources necessary to handle all of the claims for needed assistance. Often times quick response is required for the health & care of people suddenly taken out of their environment & at the mercy of the elements. Providing food, water, shelter & medical care is the key to the well being of the victims in the immediate aftermath. Recovering, rebuilding & getting your crap together takes time & money.

We’ve suffered through 2 major floods (within 12 months of each other) in the last 3 years while I’ve been recovering from chronic Lyme disease. I’ve seen a drastic change in my area’s environment & quality of life with more & more regular people becoming victims & their lives changed dramatically, sometimes overnight & without warning, through various circumstances like health, the economy or our environment. I can assure you that the gov’t can barely be counted on for basic needs after paying into the system my whole life. Even with flood insurance we got screwed. We were basically told to get in line behind the claims of 4 Florida hurricanes & the Katrina victims before we’d be likely to get the assistance we so desperately needed at the time. Our country & the rest of the world are not in a position to adequately deal with these situations collectively. Citing just one recent catastrophe-more like a series of events-are the floods in the Midwest-beyond comprehension except for the people now mired in a nightmare.

We’re heading for a time where it’s more prudent for individuals to prepare for potential emergencies from nat’l disasters or whatever. Just a heightened sense of awareness will put you more on your toes for an unexpected occurrence or emergency, especially in this economy. We haven't been around long enough to know whether to push the panic button yet or not on climate change. But it’s undeniable that we’re heading in the wrong direction with energy or lifestyle choices we’ve made as the devastating effects are becoming more obvious. Thankfully, we’re amidst a global wake-up call letting everyone know that they can make all types of positive changes in their routines to address potential climate change issues. This is very empowering knowing that any contribution will help determine future conditions for mankind’s survival on Earth. The scientific & medical communities will ultimately hold the answers as to what may eventually happen to the Earth (which will be fine no matter what happens) & its inhabitants (who may not). It’s too simplistic to say it’s just the Earth being the Earth.

    Paranoid & proud of it!

  • We need to rebuild green.

Ideal if together we could come up with a simple plan for green housing that is energy self-sufficient and has water catchment and grey water systems for rebuilding in disaster areas including blighted urban and rural communities.
