Former Colombian presidential candidate Ingrid Betancourt and three American hostages have been released by FARC rebels.
According to Colombian authorities, all the rescued hostages are in reasonably good health.

Can i ask why this is considered breaking news and the jerusalem, mongolian riots, and several other stories up here aren't? How many people even knew this was going on? How many people know who these people are? Certainly people wouldn't be cheated if people decided not to push this to the top and it's not exactly time sensitive.

I guess you beat me by a few minutes posting this.
But this is great news, although suspicious timing with Sen. John McCain visiting the country. It should be noted that Betancourt was kidnapped while campaigning against corruption and war in her country, and the American mercenaries were captured while assisting in the deployment of chemical weapons against the people of Columbia. I'm glad they're all safe, regardless. -
This is a very big story that has been going on for many years. Check out this Current pod about fighting the FARC.

watch this comment being used hereI never pray anymore since the prayers are never answered, but I have always kept Ingrid present in my mind and kept my hope for her alive. This is finally a positive piece of news in trying times. I say it deserves mass publication.
There seems to be conflicting reports as to whether the hostages were released, swapped, or liberated by force. Maybe by the time this makes it on air we will have the answer.-

For those who know Spanish, here's the link to the press conference by the Defense Minister in Colombia.
This is great news for my country and the world, there's hope that maybe we're finally destroying the FARC rebels and all hostages will be free. -
A little more background from the NYT:
"The FARC captured Ms. Betancourt while she was campaigning in Colombia’s interior in 2002. The three Americans, Marc Gonsalves, Keith Stansell and Thomas Howes, were taken captive in 2003 after their surveillance plane went down on an antinarcotics mission for the United States Defense Department."
Anyone know the company these contractors worked for? Could be EAST, Inc. Does DynCorp do surveillance or just toxic aerial fumigation?-

Amazing! I honestly didn't think she was going to make it. Her tell-all book is going to be great.

i find it oddly convenient that these hostages were 'liberated' just when John McCain visited there. After being held all these years, what really prompted their release.I really don't know much about the politics of Columbia except that the cartels there are so rich and powerful as a direct result of our prohibition on drugs. That is American money driving that craziness down there like it or not.
-
in the latin CNN they said that american intellingence helped in the rescue, providing information abuot the location of the FARC forces.
That can be the link to John McCain, i'm only saying. -
Good stuff. I hear she's planning to stay and get back in politics.
Now let's not hope McCain uses this news to his favor in one or another way. -
Great news.
Ingrid Betancourt is a great human being.
When I heard the news on the radio in my car, I thanked and praised God for Ingrid Betancourt's release.
Betancourt was so brave to run for President of Columbia in her fight to stop corruption and war in her country. I remember how heartbreaking it was that she had to send her young children out of Columbia when she ran for the presidency. Her and her family's sacrifice for public service is extraordinary.
Hope she will continue her important work and soon will be President of Columbia and right the wrongs previous administrations have done and control the negative effects the U.S. government has wreaked on her country. -
they liberate 15, while more than 800 others are still kidnapped... and we wonder how genocides happen.
Dont mess with sick people, especially when they have a crap load of people under their power.
