Once the province of the poor and uninsured, medical tourism is gaining attention of industry giants such as CIGNA, Aetna and Blue Cross/Blue Shield, who say they either have begun or are considering pilot programs that provide limited coverage for foreign care.

Horrible idea. I've lived as a yoga/meditation student in India for years, and it is absolutely filthy, corrupt, unregulated, and thieving, as a whole. I would never, ever, ever, voluntarily go under the knife there- don't even trust them to give me new needles.
India is a culture always looking for short-cuts. And in this environment you want to get sliced open? The American embassy in Delhi sends their employees to Singapore for even the most basic medical needs.
Much better choices include Singapore, Thailand, and Korea.
Yet, all of these have a huge environmental impact from the air miles. Why don't we work on reform domestically, rather than shipping ourselves to the other side of the globe. Let's stop finding ways around the problem, and face it directly.
And, let's change the whole medical school process, so that we get more emotionally intelligent and compassionate doctors with less hunger for the dollar. It is disgusting how our health is part of free market capitalism. Socialism is the only answer to our health care crisis.-
