Skunk smokers 18 times more likely to develop psychosis

That 'sticky-icky' you might have been smoking could make you eighteen times more likely to develop psychosis, compared to those who only smoke hashish.

Dr. Marta Di Forti of Kings College London conducted the research into skunk use and found rather alarming results. 80% of people who had experienced psychosis - delusions and paranoia - had smoked some hi-grade, compared to 76% of people who had no mental health problem who had smoked hash.

  • I don't know;
I just read something the other day that stated that what causes the paranoia (I believe it was the THC) is counteracted by what causes the euphoria and relaxation.

  • I don't think it's possible to find a truly objective study on cannabis. Each study seems to contradict a different study done before.

  • Given that skunk usage in the UK has increased fivefold in the last six years, there's a lot of people potentially affected.

  • salaam,
What are the signs of schizophrenia and what was mentioned was three matters,
    1. hears voices of angels of GOD
2 desires death of others lacking in a right
    3 sees visions
So Bush has the first two signs for openly he claimed God spoke directly to him and how was that in recognition to a voice in his own head for evil does come in whispers evil into the mind,
Then two he killing many innocent lives and thinks nothing of it and seeks to kill more,
as three I know not what he claims to see in visional matter.
Doctors limited for the licenses become an issue,
that obedience to the demand of the system ,
    they require formost,
for if they oppose the system the licenses get rejected.
Federal requires it and steriod abuse only for the injured blue collar workers for no jail term for thsoe doctors only sports doctors get jail for abuse of it.
For injured blue collar workers abuse is there way in useage of it in matters to return back to work even at a wheel chair or stretcher they did proclaim.
Then at smokeable matter when the doctor did know negative was the meeting in response ,
then when at not knowing positive was the meeting so prejudice exsist with the knowing for at the end of teh positive meeting was keep up the good work effort,
so I agreed for prejudice was the account,
for they blame where not blame worthy,
and where blame worthy they blame not,
for with any matter the result is what counts,
for even wheat bread maybe fine for some life,
while it has an ill effect upon some life.
so if it gives a negative result then advice as even with the approved drugs when given prozact was told not to ever take it again for the results was negative in its useage even though it be at approval in FDA matters to useage .
Then the incerts in packaged approved matter as warnings exsist with each packaged matter,
so only FDA can issue harm or loss with no jail time,
so how do they get to TRUTH in matter?
Investment to keep some matter in black market value for money laundry of no taxes ?
For the approved meets tax issues while the non approved meets none they simple take the whole amount when they find it in accounts so above taxing what a gain they rather take the whole amount it pays higher than the tax issue.
    Clever they are in deeds,
For they even robbed the workers for years in the retirement accounts of wealth they called stock,
while stock was the matter produced,
as wages owed not at stock in matter to TRUTH.
Robbery is there way in life.

  • More Reefer Madness for the masses to consume. centuries of safe use only to discover it's dangerous to a modern world.... I'm Not buying it. Paranoia is a state of mind. With gas prices going up I'm getting paranoid that I won't be able to make it to work.... anyone care? does gasoline consumption cause psychosis? these old tactics are getting older and still don't work. As if paranoia was a legitimate and good enough excuse to arrest sick people , jail farmers and steal their assets, harrass the general public and loot the tax pool. Guess I'll light up now.... look ma no paranoia.

  • nowadays everybody smokes weed.
i think the starting point to combat psychoisis with cannabis, would be to de-criminalise it, so people (i know a lot of people) would not be worried (paranoid).about talking to FRANK.(the cops) or being stopped by them.

weed is everywhere. teachers smoke it. docters too.
the law is wrong. we need to educate the younger generation.

before they put tobacco in there joint's.

  • I'm always skeptical of claims that something makes you 10 or 20 times more likely to get something.

If your chances of getting a psychosis are 0.002% and by smoking a load of skunk your chances are now 0.036% it's hardly a significant increase.

They are obviously hypothetical numbers but it just goes to show that stats can be manipulated to sound more compelling.

  • I'll have some psychosis, please.

But, seriously, in order to really be permanently psychologically affected by marijuana, one usually has to be a huge user. I'm talking like several joint a day. Most people have the common sense to not smoke that much.

  • I'd like to think the psychosis is attributable to the fact that these plants are considered illegal, and that the social stigma against them drives people to be sometimes paranoid about their habits.

  • Smoke enough swag you will get paranoid. This seems like nothing compared to the feelings of rage one might experience while under the influence of alcohol. It can make you fearless and act without remorse( until the hangover ). "Shit, what did I do last night?"
I'll take a loss of short term memory and munchies, Please!

  • Is the paranoia the temporary kind or does it mean long-lasting effects?

  • psychosis isn't the right term, it's a loaded word that could imply many things to different people. Obviously in this respect it has a negative connotation. When hearing of these studies, you have to ask, who is providing these results? Who funded the study? And what is their agenda? Often when research is done, especially on a subject that is controversial, they are just looking to build support for a conclusion they have already arrived at. There is no such thing as a truly unbiased study, even double-blinds, there are too many miniscule factors that are easily overlooked, usually in accordance to the agenda of the researcher or funding source. Not to mention the fact that often the interpretation of the data is included in place of the actual data. In the case of included data, you can't even be sure that other influential data wasn't omitted. soooooo, bleh.

  • The proliferation of skunk is the result of prohibition, at least here in Moscow. it is so much less profitable and more dangerous to deal with regular grass, or even hash (that is more compact and secure then grass) that the whole ganja thing is going the wrong way, making even Independent, a Brittish was-before champion of legalization, has dropped their support due to similar studies (editor in chief has also changed).

As the skunk replaces grass, it changes the ways of this addiction to almost a hard-drug-style patterns with teenagers indeed missing the whole subtle surge of creativity and getting the dumbing-down high. It is such a great loss indeed. But why not make the right conclusion to this story and see how things are really connected?

There is indeed less grass available as a result of official politics of prohibition - but so much more skunk - and problems.

  • It's reefer madness! What came first, the weed smoking or the psychosis? Maybe psychotic people are more likely to self medicate? I certainly am!

  • no addiction ))) - when you have it, you smoke it, when you don't - you look for it ) that's it.

  • Well shouldn't it be obvious altering your way of normally thinking damages you brain in the long run? This goes for all mind-altering stuff you can find.

Or as this article says it:

"No drugs that alter brain chemistry are totally safe. Just as some who drink heavily become alcoholic, so a minority of those who smoke cannabis daily go psychotic. Society has to balance the enjoyment that the majority get from cannabis with the harm it causes to a vulnerable few. "

  • that stanky shit will make you wig. but what if psychosis was just a fancy name describing a way people understand interactions between people. they see how artificial and shallow relationships are between people. they see how simple interactions are and cant handle dealing with this new point of view. all relationships are dominant/submissive and sexual. in all conversations and interactions. you ask how i might know well i did cid in a Holiday Inn. not really but its was funny when i wrote it.

  • I'd rather be driven to psychosis by skunk weed, than the war and corruption all around! Give me my weed BITCH!

  • These findings might be a bit exaggerated, but weed does do different things to different people, I've seen it float some peoples' boats and completely sink others'. The fact remains that pot can hurt your mental health, if you smoke it, smoke it cautiously.

  • Seeing as America (California specifically) is one of the leading, if not the leading producer of high quality medical grade cannabis, why doesn't the number 1 cash crop in that state also cause the highest psychological scare? Simply because it is propaganda. New leaders in new countries change drug laws and use false information to convince the otherwise gullable public to believe it. It has happened in America since the 1930's and the ending of prohibition of alcohol.

Now we spend almost over $60 Billion a year in federal tax money (meaning you- the tax paying U.S. citizen pays for) and private funding to fight a failure of a drug war. We spend more money, time, and law enforcement hours than other countries to be the leading nation in illicit/illegal drug use. Again, based off of the public's gullability and lack of initiative to take a stand for what for we pay our government to do. I know that I don't pay taxes to live in a police state- do you?

  • THC, skunk or not, can only trigger an underlying mental condition. If one is not already psychotic but hasn't had any psychotic episode, THC can trigger one. Skunk has a high percentage of THC compared to ordinary pot, but people simply use less in a spliff and get more spliffs per quantity of pot than they would with ordinary pot.

  • Solution - legalise it and put nice warnings on the packets - works for tobacco. Users need to get the information and discuss it openly and not put your heads in the sand.

  • My psychiatrist highly recomends mj. It is a natural antidepressant. When my tolerance gets to the level I prefer I don't feel "stoned" just a mood boost and an increase in physical endurance. I hav PTSD with rage disorder which is very well treated with mj. I don't smoke enough to interferer with cognitive processes just enough to calm me down (along with 5 pshychiatric meds).
  • Don't bogart that psychosis my friend, pass it over to me...
