To me this is what the Fourth of July is all about. Remembering the men who sacrificed all they had to take the journey to a more perfect union... a free union. We don't truly have that today, and the main reason why is because we as a people have to really want it. I question now if we really do, and that is sad. These words of wisdom and warning from men who though flawed were brilliant and who knew something themselves about slavery of the mind and soul are words to be reflected on. As John Adams said, "Liberty once lost, is lost forever." We as a people are allowing liberty to slip away as we distract ourselves and lose our focus on these words. How I wish we had men of such courage and brilliance as these to once again point us in the right direction. However, their words can be the inspiration we need to now do that. The question is: will we?

  • Now let's see how many politicians come out tomorrow including the "candidates" to give their phony speeches about freedom and Democracy. This as they continue to support Bush 's policies by voting for his FISA bills, and continue to bow down to corporate power over the people. Personally, they all make me ill with their photo op pretend patriotism.

  • Jan this is hot stuff. Revolutionary thought in this empire of lies we live in. Thanks so much for reminding us about the true meaning of the 4th of July and what a precious gift of freedom we have from our forefathers.

    Damn the shadows that are eating away our freedom, the corporate shadows who are building their empire of lies; their house of cards. May it all tumble to the ground and pronto.

  • I know that they didn't have to worry about sound bites, spin control, and opinion polls. But let's admit it ,that this is prophetically spooky. Over two hundred and fifty years later their words are still relevent. I'll speculate that we are not hearing words from our modern era politicians that will ring as true in another another two hundred and fifty years. Thank you Jan. for putting us back on point.

  • Jubal: I am a Revolutionary...always have been, always will be. Kind of wish I had lived back then even though it was a harder life. I would have been a great friend to Abigail Adams. She was truly one of America's greatest citizens as well. It wasn't just the men who shaped this country. ;-).

  • Jan: How right you are. Women did have a strong persuasion with their husbands, even though they personally didn't have the political power they do today.

    I was inspired by Laura Linney in her portrayal of Adam's wife, she portrayed a woman worth learning from.

    I have always loved strong women, I admire them. My grandmother was a very strong woman giving birth to ten children and raising several grandchildren. She died at 101. She was the most loving and kind and strong person I ever knew. Second would have to be my aunt who is no 82. She started a war in Ecuador with her poetry and essays that were read over the radio down there back in the late 80's. She was a revolutionary woman when women were not allowed to even go to University in her country. She wrote several books and hundreds of poems.

    Another very strong woman was my mother, although she got lost somewhere a while back, but I hope she finds herself once again.

    But back to you, you Jan are such a prolific woman, I admire you too. You feel like family to me.

  • jubal: Thanks so much. I find you to be someone of infinite wisdom and appreciate your friendship here very much. I come from a long line of strong women as well. My grandmother birthed thirteen children watching half of them die at young ages, two tragically, and my mom fought cancer for much of her adult life and never gave into it until it ravaged her entire body and she couldn't fight it any longer. She was a woman of such strength and grace who taught me so much about inner strength even though I lost her at a young age. My best regards to your mother, may she find her way back. And yes, Laura Linney was inspirational as Abigail Adams. I'm hoping HBO will show John Adams again this weekend.

    My, my~....blinking....looking.....thinking.....wondering....

    could it be? are we? did we? should we? are we? cows? sheep? being herded up?

    Reading, learning, awakening, what is freedom worth if not to cherish our ancestors who designed our system of justice with such care and understanding. With that said, it is our duty to continue here at current.com to inform as many as are willing to wake up that freedom is not just another word, and that freedom to buy [stuff] is not our credo.


    Freedom is more that a/c, tv, rvs, dvds, cds.

    Thank you JanforGor for putting this up so we can remember where our freedom comes from. I salute the Brave, Intelligent, prudent men and women who stood up for what they knew in their hearts was truth.(those that came before me, and you here today)

    Jan, thank you so much for this post. Your point is well taken. I, for one, choose to remain hopeful that we Americans will awaken before it is too late... that we will remember how sacred liberty truly is.

    I would also like to remind anyone who has the means and is interested that the REVOLUTION MARCH in D.C. is right around the corner. July 12th. Naomi Wolfe, G. Edward Griffin, Ron Paul and many others will be present to give speeches on liberty.

    I feel like I have nothing left to loose if I have no planetary home worth living on to look forward to. Freedom is a responsibility that must be taken seriously and exercised regularly or we will loose it.
