$50 billion proposed to fight AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria

President George W. Bush urged Congress on Wednesday to approve funds to fight AIDS in Africa and other countries, and said the issue was high on his agenda for a Group of Eight summit in Japan next week.

Members of the U.S. Senate sought last week to pass legislation to more than triple funds to fight AIDS, but some Republicans vowed to block it because of its cost.

The House of Representatives has approved its version of the measure which proposes $50 billion in U.S. funds over five years to fight AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria.

More than 25 million people have died of AIDS since it was first recognized more than a quarter century ago. About 33 million people are infected with HIV, mostly in sub-Saharan Africa where it is spread primarily through heterosexual sex.

the real solution to solving the crisis facing many countries in africa is to trade with them fairly. AIDS is solvable as long as we educate women and don't rape them as we are enslaving them to harvest chocolate for our candy

suffolk i think maybe you are a little uneducated yourself as to what it is that makes aids sucha problem there. It doesnt have anything to do with US raping their women. It has alot to do with the fact that A. their husbands go a long way off for work, sleep with prostitutes and then bring it home to their wives, B. Many of the goverments there REFUSE to accept AIDS exists, or that it is a sexual thing and instead claim that doctors are infecting the children. Then comes the uneducated thing. Very little has to do with us.

Clay...hes still adumbass, his work with Africa is pretty much the ONLY thing he got right. Even the most hardcore of bush haters will give him Africa. It's just sad he can't solve any problems here while hes at it.

well silencenomore, you forgot one thing which is religion, which has done huge amounts of damage in it's denial of the use of contraceptives. i mean really, its astounding how much christianity has harmed africa.

I would be more willing to give him africa IF he had given some helicopters to help darfur. what'd they need, 24? yea, he's throwing paper at a problem and it ain't working. props for misguided effort though (i guess)

Funny thing is, the seven other countries going to the G8 conference are concentrating on the Environment this time around, while our President uses AIDS in Africa to make us look the other way...

Im tired of people thinking that just because people give money to africa, and africa aids funds means that thats going to solve the problem. you probably know that its not easy to solve it, but do you really UNDERSTAND who hard it is?? money DOES NOT solve problems!!. People solve problems, dedication solves problems, and education solves problems. If there was a plan written up to exactly where this money will be spent, why it will be spent their, and what are its potential benefits spent there versus in any other place then giving money and putting the plan into action with the help of missionaries, and volunteers, etc. might actually help to begin to stop the spread of aids.
