  • It's about time...I wonder why I haven't heard about this on FOX news?

  • ·CONGRATULATIONS & HAPPY LONG OVERDUE INDEPENDANCE DAY!
    ·
    · If you think you’re having a bad day or life didn’t turn out quite like you’d hoped, take a drive through the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation appropriately abutting Badlands Nat’l Park & just south of our country’s iconic Mount Rushmore, nestled in the majestic Black Hills of South Dakota. But don’t expect to find that same proud head-held-high sense of patriotism here. And rightly so, amidst a bleak landscape, nondescript buildings where life is rough, basic services scarce & a seemingly forgotten group of people are lucky to celebrate their 50th birthday. I doubt the U.S. gov’t could have found a more suitable wasteland to isolate an amalgamation of defeated First Nation tribes as they laid claim to all of the surrounding lands & their potential riches.

The Lakotahs got a bad rap in the 1970’s, ironically, at Wounded Knee where the U.S. Cavalry slaughtered hundreds of their ancestors in 1890. After a short standoff to bring national attention to their plight, this unfortunately led to several deaths & injuries of law enforcement officers as well as several Lakotahs over the next several years. Nothing much has changed except for some more bullet holes in the sign designating the Wounded Knee battlefield area-eerie reminders of the continuing injustices haunting these people. It’s about time these people got more than just a casino to placate them while only a few actually enjoy the windfall of vast wealth originally intended for all tribe members.

Let’s hope Russell Means has reawakened the sleeping giant of Crazy Horse & that his word will be heard even louder & efforts more successful than in the past. It’s time to close this horrendous circle of injustice that perpetuates the suffering our history thankfully can’t seem to sweep under the rug.

Are you kidding about FOX news-then people might think a Revolution is possible considering the current tyrannical conditions under which we are all forced to live now.

  • It's too bad that this nation isn't righteous enough so that the Lakota would be proud to be a part of it...too much abuse... too many ruined lives...

Where is the integrity..? ... with truth and honor, they have gone by the wayside...or maybe, for the Native Americans, they have never gotten the respect they deserve...

  • Alright, way to see this going up in the news! You've got the support of the Californian Independence movement!
Seems like a lot of nations are declaring independence from the usa, good thing too.
    Dmitri_Molotov
  • The delegation went to Washington, D.C. last year in mid-December 2007 and declared the abrogation of the treaties due to the U.S. Government's failure to live up to its treaty obligations at the U.S. Justice Department.

    It's been 7 1/2 months since then.

  • Good for them! The problem is getting their land from the feds. Stupid federal government...

Now all we need is californian independence.
    FallenMorgan
  • I dont think its ever going to really happen..
    .
    whats with this Cali. independence?

    Where 'pac at now :)
    Prijedor
  • California needs independence if we're going to survive the fall of America. We've always been socially ahead of the rest of the country, and we're the most agriculturally productive and populous of all the states. When we gain our independence, we will be the 7th largest economy in the world. Contact me for more information, but for right now all we can do is wait for the opportune moment.

  • Awesome!
    cerealforeal
  • CAlifornia could never sustain itself. Texas on the other hand would litterally be the Dubia of the western Hemisphere.

NOCAL AND SOCAL dont get all upset about my comment im just stating that you guys are farther in debt to the fed than most of the other states and they would never let you go. While texas is chillin with our Oil that once we were free from the environmentalist wackos we could finally drill tthe shit out of it! What are you top exports, i think its hacky sacks and hemp sandals right?
    clayjj05
  • Again, we're the most agriculturally productive state.
We contribute 13% of the US GDP, and have a GDP of 1.7 Trillion USD.
Almonds, wine, gold, oranges, oil, and on the subject of hemp the legendary Mendocino marijuana are just a few of the many exports of California. Not to mention the entertainment (LA) and computer science (Silicon Valley) industries. We are economically larger than Australia.
Clayj, I would fully support you if you were to attempt to get Texas its independence back. You were annexed just like California, under the same treaty in fact, and like California you were always a different country at heart. Both of our states are constantly misunderstood by the federal government, and both could be even more productive as independent countries.
    Dmitri_Molotov
  • Ill give you that dmitri we could trade agriculture and milk for energy untill you guys figured out something better than Oil. Dontt count on us giving up oil though. We are second in GDP with 1.1 Trillion but have a far smaller spending habit than you guys.

    GOD BLESS TEXAS
    GOD BLESS BIG OIL
    clayjj05
  • Boy i wish California would get there independence.
    jeromecon
  • As a Lakota, I would like to point out how ridiculous it is that our nation would find it necessary to seek independence in the first place. Whatever happened to sovereignty? And by the way, the IRS is apparently trying to tax winnings at competition pow wow dances. The big government vampire continues...

  • Wonder why the story of the Republic of Lakotah didn't make it to Fox or CNN? Wonder why it probably won't get to Current TV either.

This story was up to #3 on Current's news page yesterday and has dropped to #14 this morning.

Like Russ Means told me, "Americans don't want to know about Indians. We're the evidence."

  • Thanks, Hawmawg, for your words about no need for independence because Indian Nations have sovereignty.

"Sovereignty is not granted, it is inherent."

  • People who watch Current.TV won't hear about the Republic of Lakotah and the history of the U.S. government's breaking of treaties with the Lakotah.

This story fell from #3 yesterday to #22 this afternoon.

  • It's time for justice. Now the big challenge. Can the United States Government be counted on to do the right thing and help this happen or does it have to go to International Courts?
    Stradius
  • Do Native American's pay income tax? or any other taxes ? I have been told that they do not, is this true? Are Indian Casino's required to pay tax? My last question. Why do so many of the nice homes on the reservation's, in Canada, have all of the windows broken out?
    MoonLoon
  • Most reservation towns I've seen seem to be a little "down in the dumps" by mainstream middle-class USA standards.

I'm no sociologist but my take on it is this: The Native American cultures are suffering social problems and cultural upheaval just like the rest of the world but they're also "kept" in their reservations which is a little like imprisonment. Even though they have way more rights and privileges and free money than typical citizens of the USA they are still the descendants of a bullied people and that's gotta have an effect.

The Lakotah that I've met in my region (not near the reservation) have been typically drunken wanderers with no purpose and seem to be lost souls and typically they are sad in general, I've met a few chatty fellows. These people need their cultural identity and homelands back.

We should be pleased that they are taking legal measures to make it so rather than going "rogue" like the Palestine extremists. If the Palestinians made use of the United Nations as an advocate of International Law they might get a LOT farther than the last 30 years of bloodshed.

  • nothing like telling "uncle" sam to fuck off (the worthless mfer) good for them!
    echoz
  • GOOD. The US slaughtered them and then abandoned the survivors. Disgusting.
