  • "This marks the third animal-human hybrid embryo licence to be issued by Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority and the first since the Commons voted in favour of this controversial research last month."

Uhhh, what are the other two! YUK.

"But it's important to say that we're at the very early stages of this research and it will take a considerable amount of time. There is still a great deal to learn about these techniques and much of our early work will involve understanding how we can make the hybrid cloning process as efficient as possible."

    WHY? WHY? WHY?

  • It starts ....

but my theory is its already started they just tellin us they started when they oready done it and suceeded

points to be considered what will a vegetarian who faces death think when he is told that he can have organ replacement from a pig or die

  • I think its terrible to do that to an innocent animal. No animal deserves to become a frankenstein "thing" and suffer only to be cut up and explored. There is no reason to do this. Disect child molesters and serial killers instead of using our tax dollars to keep them in over crowded prisons. Im so sick of hearing the endless bizzare ways to waste money and make animals suffer under the guise of science. Besides..if you can clone an animal and make a hybrid, you surly can clone the human "parts" you need to study.

  • Ignorant scare mongerers like who ever made that photo are holding us as a species back.

  • One other thing....how would laws apply being it is legally human? I mean..wouldnt that be considered murder to kill it. Im so disturbed by how much it looks human and the babies..look like babies. One is even grabbing at its foot. People are going to be outraged when they realise that they are creating Frankenbabies and kiling them. Humanity scares me lately. Its like after the Bush Administration...fewer people have souls.

  • Our species is in the process of making ourselves extinct because we refuse to accept limits upon our population and are degrading our resources, so what part of making us live longer is going to help us? We get one life each time around, and when its time to go, its time to go. That's life baby, enjoy it while you got it and don't be greedy. This kind of science is destructive and tampers with that which we do not fully understand. I have to say this is a horrible idea.

  • that image is just nasty.

  • One....Um no...I am a vegetarian, I dont eat dead animals. I think someone had to okay it to be conducted...thats where Bush would come in. And two, if you can put people into space, split atoms, isolate genes etc, the technology is there to find other ways to save human lives rather than assuming that every living than as well as resource belongs to us to do as we wish. I dont believe in using up all out resources and I definately do not believe in mutilating and creating hybrid human pigs. I think all life is precious and all beings have the right to live.

  • After reading the whole article, these quotes essentially give an idea of what they will do with these new powers.

"The key thing we are doing is trying to create stem cells WITHOUT ANY ANIMAL DNA IN THEM"

"We will take skin cells from [human] patients ... and put them into pig eggs AFTER THEIR CHROMOSOMES (i.e. DNA) HAVE BEEN REMOVED."

Scared yet? I'm not ... All, and I mean all, that defines us is our DNA; when a pig cell has pig DNA removed from it, it is no longer uniquely a pig cell.

The resulting embryos must also be terminated after, I believe, around 14 days, long before they develop into anything resembling a human. Importantly they do not have the ability to feel pain, think, or move. They are, probably by all of our definitions, not human.

  • Because science is MAGIC!

  • This is good. Hopefully there will be some kind of breakthrough and some diseases can be cured or even treated better.

  • Eeeeew. thats not right.

  • I think the image says most of it,,,scary.

And users here say the rest, just not right, on sooo many levels.

  • No government or religon has ever been able to hold back science for any real length of time. Copernicus, Galileo and Newton were not bad guys. (well not all of them anyway).

If we are sacred of science we need to crawl back into the cave and start worshiping whatever superstision we can conjure.

The truth shall set us free.

  • "START worshiping whatever superstision we can conjure." ?

    Ahem...

  • The thought of a human-pig hybrid is kinda creepy. And the picture really doesn't help.

  • where did this image come from? it really dumbs down the science. it should be marked so folks don't think it's real.

  • Embryos people! EMBRYOS! They're not going to make an adult hybrid.

Wow! Umm what happens when we create a human animal that has enough inteligence to know that it is being kept for scientific research? Is sci fi becoming reality?

  • Half the people with 'opinions' on this issue don't even know what an embryo is.

  • the slaves are not reproducing fast enough, so this research hopes that somehow it will change that and produce a half dozen humans

  • Every single Sci-fi Show has had this moral issue brought up. One of my favorite is from the TV Series Enterprise where Trip needed a new heart (I think) and they used an alien that could clone and become just like him. The aging process was different and in a matter of days he was as old as the original Trip. They were going to knock him out and harvest the heart but for the beginning to the moment that they were to do it they fell in love with him.

All the while the original was unconscious and being kept alive.

The clone was taught so many things and he looked like Trip but was not just like him in personality. So instead of just taking his heart they gave him a choice to help or not to help. Of course he ended up helping, but that was one of the saddest episodes I have ever seen.

It is never within anyone's rights to take someone else's life to have it harvested to save you.

Who here would eat a human pig hybrid sausage?

    Don't think it's not possible.

  • This is wrong on so many levels. Just because we have the ability to do something does not make it right.

    What has science done?

  • The picture in this article is of a sculpture by Patricia Piccinini. Her art explores the possible results of genetic manipulation and the human experience with it.

If you ever get the chance to see her work live, you should.

  • Can we agree that the people who oppose this research now don't get to benefit from the findings later? I just think it would be the ultimate poetic justice.

More seriously, though, this is very promising research. Using the pig embryos as a kind of shell into which we can insert disease prone DNA and examine it? Clever, and it avoids many of the uncertainties of traditional animal research because we are directly studying human DNA. Maybe readers should, you know, read the article before posting moronic comments that prove they failed to do so.

  • It looks like we're two-thirds of the way toward achieving manbearpig. That's terrifying.
    Adumbration
  • I agree. This is just getting out little by little, but they've long begun to clone human and animals together. They constantly stress how the pig and human are so similar; moreso than primates. This is sick because man has lost his moral compass in place of greed and making money.
The picture is like a horror film.

if it gives me a heart in 50 years when i need it, so be it.

  • This is a hard topic. Not allowing Science to try and test to improve our Life is radical and extremists. The other hand is that if these embryos are allowed to "live" more than 10-days, then we have stupidity issues. Aside from the fact of playing "God" is not natural or nice.
There should be a BIG watchdog on this.

  • Could anyone remove this Offensive Story from the Home Page? So as this Picture.

  • It seems like the same ill-informed widely generalized demonization of scientific exploits, which Mary Shelly capitalized on, is still present in our society. Never mind that nobody is attempting to raise a human pig hybrid . Never mind that our country affords no protection to the life of an embryo. Let’s protest this research because our heart, whether healthy or diseased, goes out to that plastic model of no ones ambition.

  • this is exactly why the world is gonna end soon gods fed up cause we keep messing with nature
  • This is crazy! People are so stupid its sick. Why the hell would we need to make hybrids like this to study anything??? People die, get over it already!!!

We mess with the nature of things in the name of human advancement.... We need to wake up and smell what they are cooking up in their little labs...
