As a former veteran, I kinda wonder how much of it has to do with the economy.. I know during peace time my CO tried to humiliate me into re-upping, it wasn't uncommon then to be told "you can't cut it on the outside", and other self image killing things to make you believe that you couldn't ever make it as a civilian. I hope they all did it for the right reasons.
