Back in 2003, an "uncut" version of Fritz Lang's Metropolis was released on DVD. According to recent news coming out of Argentina, 24 more minutes have been discovered, meaning that the quest for a definitive cut may finally be realized in the near future.

Like Orsen Welles' The Magnificent Ambersons and Touch of Evil, Metropolis underwent heavy editing in the hands of Hollywood studio moguls. Paramount Pictures attempted to simplify Lang's labyrinthine narrative by chopping a rumored half hour out of the film. This footage was presumed to be lost, but this recent discovery could result in the original cut restored for audiences to enjoy.

Hollywood Elsewhere's Jeffrey Welles notes that even with the 2003 restoration effort, he never felt that narrative ever really suffered or felt to be lacking in any significant way. What do you think?

Metropolis is, in my opinion, the best film ever made.

Wow, this give me hope for an Ambersons cut. The film elaborated on the themes of the book in an eloquent fashion. The book was a pulitzer winner, and also had an overly winding storyline. Wells made the film so that it looked like a faded photograph that got progressively more dull as the film wore on. The idea was to express the loss of an era to mere memory or nostalgia. It was brilliant, I'd love to see it as intended.
