Despite spending millions on trying to clean up the pollution, five weeks out and the air quality in the capital is still 5 times worse than what is considered safe.

That level of pollution has horrible effects when taking exercise. Just jogging for a short time every day left me with a bad cough by the end of the week when I was there last summer.. there's even something known now across china as the 'beijing cough'...

I heard british athletes were training in specially developed tanks that mimicked the horrible air quality in Beijing. Am in Shanghai now, and although i'd imagine the air quality here is just as bad, there are days when the sun pops through and you can imagine your lungs actually breathing clean oxygen.
