Doctor fined for severing man's penis

Romanian surgeon Dr Naum Ciomu was ordered to pay $795,000/£400,000 in compensation to a patient whose penis he severed during an operation.

The surgical accident occured in July 2004 during an operation on the patient's testicles. Instead of making an incision to the testicle, Ciomu severed the penis instead. The now 38-year-old victim's penis was reconstructed using a piece of muscle from his arm, but its function is aesthetic only.

In addition to the monetary fine, Ciomu was handed a one-year suspended prison sentence by the Bucharest Magistrates Court on Friday.
