American obesity: now in map form

Image...
Interesting map here that shows state-level obesity rates. The leanest state in the Union is Colorado. The fattest? Mississippi.

A bunch of southern states are in the top ranks of obesity, leading me to believe that a diet based around barbecue, fried chicken, and biscuits and gravy is not the road to svelteness (though it does sound delicious).

And Mississippi takes the cake! I guess everything really isn't bigger in Texas.

Southern food is not healthy and this map shows it. But it sure tastes good.

Another thing to consider, healthy food coasts more than good food. Those are some 'poorer' states that are fatter. Next time you're in a store compare the price of little debbies to carrots or apples.

Alaska beat Texas... Blubber has more utility up north, but it's still a bit surprising.

It would be great to cross reference this with IQ and votes by state in the 2004 election. I bet the result would be very interesting.

Well fed? or can we call it an epidemic yet?

There is more to this comparison than meets the eye! Go to the mall and observe the fattest people walking around. Do you not want to say, "What is your problem"? Fried foods, fast foods, are not good for you! Lard is not a food supplement! Big Mac's, fries, and a chili cheese dog, while sitting own your fat ass, watching Jerry Springer, would make Jack LaLanne cringe!

We know southern food is heavy on the fat but could there be another reason the mountain states are so svelte? Is it skiing? Or walking uphill?

Inquiring minds might ask? Mississippi has the lowest I.Q. and fattest people in the U.S. Barack Obama also, won there in a landslide. H'mmm could there be a correlation? If you are fat and stupid vote Democrat? The statistics don't lie.

    Moonloon,

Clearly the people of ol' Miss are coming out of their stupor from supporting Bush and the Republicans all those years.

Great, now I can avoid moving to places with pedophiles and obese people. I understand the pedophile map, but why obesity? Leave em be people.

  •

im kinda happy i live in one of the leanest states. still surprising 21.1% are obese!

  •

Wasn't Ole Miss a Huckabee state ? Like Ark, and TN. And yes there is correlation to poverty levels and IQ with obesity. WV anyone?

As the late great Willie Morris said, Mississippi isn't a state, it's a club.

What I find freaking hilarious is that the fattest states are in the South.

Evil corporations, filling our foods with hydrogenated oil and trans fat, polluting our bodies with grease. It's not so much about the indavidual, because many don't know about this. My mother knew nothing about hydrogenated oil until I opened her eyes to it.

Get off your asses people. Its not ALWAYS genetic. sorry to be insensitive, but we shouldn't need to worry about a map showing how fat we are.

    I've been to Wisconsin...
I think these numbers are a little on the "thin" side.
There's no way Delaware is fatter than Milwaukee.
