Tokyo (Japan) –A new generation of high capacity optical discs could be on the way as Pioneer claims to have developed read-only disc media with 16 layers and a total capacity of 400 GB. The company believes that the technology could “greatly reduce the number of discs to be used and therefore contribute to the conservation of resources.”

The technology provides 25 GB of room on each layer, bringing the capacity of one 16-layer disc to 400 GB. While the 25 GB per-layer capacity is equivalent to what Blu-ray provides, Pioneer did not say which technology its new discs are based upon and did not even mention whether blue laser or red laser technologies were employed. However, Pioneer stated that the 16-layer discs would be “compatible” with current BD discs.

In a press release, Pioneer simply stated that “this development has bolstered Pioneer's confidence in the feasibility of a large-capacity optical disc, which is expected to become necessary in the near future.” For now, the company has only succeeded in creating a 16-layer read-only optical disc, but the company believes that it can transfer the technology to recordable discs as well.

Now all I can think about is how I could fill up a 400GB CD.

Oh I know, with a crap load of songs I download and never listen to!

  • Someone needs to apply the same technology to LaserDiscs... 1TB frisbees.
  • well done, pioneer. giving sony a run for its money!
  • hmmm....I don't see this going anywhere ...Any of you remember when mini discs were set to revolutionize the music industry....

I prefer my portable GB player...Forget about CD'S

  • It's so amazing how far CDs have come! I remember when they barely held anything at all, before the "CD burning" age.

  • Wow, I wonder how long they'll last and I can just imagine how painful it would be to have one of these get scratched.

  • I'm so happy that so many people like my stories.

  • I wish that this technology was around in the 90's when CD's were useful.

  • wooh, 'bye bye ipod'.. thats a bit strong! part of what makes the ipod win at life is its easy to use interface... going back to the 90's crappy cd players would be one huge step down lol

  • Haha, too bad my brain can hold like at least 200 terabytes. You'd need a couple of CD's to reach my operating capacity.
  • I hate cd's and I think they were the worst invention ever.

Who the hell would design something you have to handle so often, but your not supposed to touch?!

They are so vulnerable and delicate and they always end up getting scratched.

I thought minidiscs, umd's or even floppy's were a step in the right direction, with that hard protective case built in.

Are people still buying cd's anyway?

  • So long Blue-Ray, your reign was short.

  • Holy Data Storage Batman!!
    unclepete
  • 400GB! That's just more data to lose when I leave my CD in direct sunlight. I'll stick to flash memory.
    bishopobispo
  • I wonder how long that would take to burn...I'll stick with my external hard drive for data and my Ipod for mp3 quality music.

  • Great. Now we can consolidate our porn collection to one disk!
    Neghie
  • This will be brilliant for backup! I don't think it will take hold with music, though. You would have to flip through so many tracks before you got to the song you wanted!
  • Its just a weak attempt for the CD to stay current the CD went out with Steve Urkel
    TexasPatriot67
  • nice
    osiris326
  • Those would be so nice for backups. You could backup instead of selectively backing up files you could just backup the whole damned drive.
  • This makes Blu-Ray look like nothing.

    Technology can be extremely amazing!

  • This'll come in handy the next time I need to back up all the computers in my house on one disc.
    ultravphunter
  • so the ipod replaced the cd, but now the cd is going to come back and knock the ipod back down a notch? that's weird. eh. they'll probably have 10,000 gig iphones before long. technology is awesome.

  • AAAARRRGHHHH!!!! CAN WE PLEEAASSE JUST STICK TO ONE TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENT AT A TIME!!! JUST LIKE MY CELL, THE MOMENT I GET USED TO ALL ITS LITTLE FRIGGING FEATURES......BAM!....OUT COMES ANOTHER ONE NOT EVEN 3 MONTHS LATER TO MAKE MINE OBSULETE! AT LEAST GIVE ME TIME TO THROW THE FRIGGING BOX THAT IT CAME IN AWAY! GEEZE!
    tmaster
  • now all they have to do is shrink it to fit in your pocket - flash drive anyone?
    oly90808
  • OMG THIS IS AMAZING THIS REALLY WILL SAVE A LOT OF ROOM ALL OVER THE WORLD
    CroatianPimp
  • It's a "read-only disc" - it is my perhaps faulty understanding that a read-only disc is for reading only, i.e. one cannot write to it, one cannot burn anything to it.

  • Still Super Sweet!

  • If it can't store a hoverboard, I'm not interested.
    joebrilliant
  • i don't think greater capacity isn't going to cut down on number is discs used dramatically... we'll just find more stuff to store and burn.
