Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has told a newspaper his country is unlikely to make peace with Israel while President George W. Bush remains in office.
However, in an interview published on the website of Le Figaro daily on Monday, Assad said he was betting that the next U.S. leader would get more involved in the peace process.
Assad said Syria and Israel were looking for common ground to start face-to-face negotiations, adding that it was vital to find the right country to mediate such talks.
"Frankly, we do not think that the current American administration is capable of making peace. It doesn't have either the will or the vision and it only has a few months left," he said.

Its cool that there is at least a chance that Israel and Syria could actually get along, but Israel and its neighbors have never gotten along too well. Hopefully this won't fall apart and these countries will be able to improve their relationship with help from the next U.S administration.

If that isn't the truth, I don't know what is. This is serious shit boys and girls. Syrians talking to Israelis?!!? Can't wait until a human not bogged down by cold war ideology and surrounded by strike-first-ask-questions-later cronies gets into the Oval Office. I think al-Assad is ready for some Change.
-
It seems like a peace agreement between Israel and Syria is to isolate Iran. But if at least one country can come to an agreement with Israel the better it will be for American citizens.
-
I think the rest of the world is starting realize that they too have a say in the USA's international ambitions. The United Nations needs to become more a vehicle for this stuff than the USA anyway.

When are you liberal loons ever going to learn!
The USA and other democratic nations get along just fine... its only countries that have "totalitarian regimes" in place that we cant trust! All you have to do is look back at the clinton/gore era to see that china and pakistan acquired nukes.
And now you want another liberal President... to let islamic extremists totalitarian regimes and jihadist acquire nukes so they can terrorise the whole world! And the UN is not going to save you.
Peace only comes with strength as Ronald Reagan so elegantly put it! he bankrupted russia and tore down the wall in germany.-

That is so factually inaccurate I threw up in my mouth a little bit. To start with, only blindly ideological conservatives credit the arms race as the ultimate destroyer of Communism. Are you kidding? Have you read any post-Cold War literature? Communism killed Communism. Not pointless rhetoric and war. Was Grenada a success?? Was the Iran-Contra affair a success?? How about every CIA-funded coup in Latin America??
Now, what do nuclear weapons have to do with this at all?? I mean, Syria possibly received some information from AQ Kahn in the 90s and some centrifuges from North Korea. But Israel blew that shit up, without our help. Why would we not support steps toward talking instead of cold relations, or war? Syria doesn't even recognize Israel as Israel. So why is this bad?? I know you're answer will involve some serious talking points (terrorist, jihad, totalitarian, scary, bad men), but maybe you should not act so scared. For all the tough talk warmongers offer, they sure are scared of people who aren't like them and who say anything remotely antithetical to their world view.
Actually, I don't even know what you are saying. You are just calling people names and acting as if your belligerent words are doing something. All it does is set the discussion and the issue back. Just like the warmongers and hawks do all over this country, you have not offered any insight into the geopolitical forces at work here. Just pretend like its always Us vs Them, because that has worked so stupendously in the past. -
I would like to see anyone or country at peace no matter who it is. As for Syria and israel I really don't see any peace in the mideast as long as israel is there being back by America period. If America backs off and Israel gets rid of its Nukes and breaks ties with America government and corporations it has a chance for peace. America and Israel are becomming the terroists countries of the world and the world is growing tired of war and terror. These countries must be enlightened and quit war mongering in the name of peace to make money and generate bombs and guns to aid their greed.

Syria and Israel shouldn't be that big a deal... I saw the Syrian Ambassador speak. All they want is the territory Israel took from them. He also thought the whole "Israeli Airstrike" thing was pretty hilarious because the "target" was an abandoned warehouse in the middle of the desert with no defense (at all). Also, Syria is 20% Christian; they're not really all that hostile at all. Hell, it wasn't even considered a terrorist state until they turned Bush down on the 2nd Iraq Coalition (they were in the first).
Now why would they not want a war in Iraq? Maybe it's because Syria is a poor country and can't afford 2 million war refugees from their next-door neighbor. But our country doesn't like to address silly things like "refugees," so we pretend they don't exist.-

Well, I wasn't necessarily saying Israel does or does not have a case for staying there, only that giving it back would end hostilities between the two. At least on Syria's end.

My point is you people are just plain stupid or ignorant and dont even know it, thats whats ashame! you just dont know any better, probably because of your indoctrination education by marxist left-wing liberals. I dont really care, your exercising your right to be stupid. Ideology is a disease!
Heres the true facts on this subject, whether you choose to believe it or not!
syria "was" the biggest illegal black market in the world, pre 9/11, dealing in everything from guns, weapons, missiles, deadly chemicals, uranium, plutonium, drugs, and even espionage, supplying all these things to: hamas, hezbollah, taliban, al qaeda, and other state sponsored terrorist,etc.etc.( source: the U.N.) not because Bush said so!
America and Israel are NOT the bad guys! And you will NEVER disarm the USA or Israel! Because we have learned through out history (Peace through Strength) is how we have survived for 232 years.
I know you Ideologs wont believe me but, you can quit drinking the kool-aid and fact check it yourself!
Therefore if you hate AMERICA get the hell out! you will fit right in over in france. America and Capitalizism is the wave of the future, look at china!
I can only led you to the water, but if all you drink is kool-aid, I cant help you! Dont respect me respect the TRUTH!

Uh huh. I'm stupid.
I will admit that I didn't know Syria was the biggest black market in the world, if it's true, but you don't seem to understand what that is? State-sponsored terrorism and a black market are polar opposites. That's what makes the market black, see? Cause it's against the law?
Also, Al Qaeda got weapons from the Syrian black market you say? Let me tell you who else they got them from- The fucking United State of America. You know who sold them? You moron republicans. I imagine you thought Iraq was righteous and necessary as well. Guess where those "WMD's" came from booboo? I'll tell you- Donald Rumsfeld, your dimwit Bush's Secretary of Defence. Look up Iran-Contra, learn a little about the history of Afghanistan, and then maybe you'll be able to make a comment that'll get you a little respect. But that's a big maybe. Until then shut up because nobody wants to read your poorly punctuated propaganda.-

But dude, Booboo, if ideology is a disease then why are you so blinded by it?? Where's your focus. Yes, Syria is a de-facto arms dealer and supporter of non-state organizations that use militant wings to undermine the peace process of the entire Palestinian region (both in Israel and in Lebanon). Yes, the Syrian regime has been tolerant of and at times voicing approval of Wahhabist taught fundamentalism that has proliferated throughout the Middle East (and the ideological rationale behind the terrorist attacks of 9/11). But those two facts do not connect the dots to out pointless rhetoric and ineffective sanctions that we have heaved in the direction of Syria. The US needs a new approach.
We entrench the al-Assad dynasty even though the autocratic state only portrays a decently secular society to be in lock step. The nation as a whole represents the majority of the strain that runs through the Sunni Arab Middle East. They do not condone Al-Queda per say, but they lend a sympathetic ear. The heavy handed government is our governments ally in the fight against extremism, even if they don't want to admit it. But we have to engage them. Talk to them. Start relations with Syria and Israel. The road map to peace is through Damascus. Everyone knows that.
And stop saying we hate America. If you keep telling people to dissent to get out, then you are the one who hates America. You know America is founded on speaking our minds and not following blindly. I'm not telling you to leave nor do I think you unpatriotic. I am sure you are patriotic booboo. I would never dare say anything like that to a person I don't even know. Why do you think that it's OK to tell me to get out of the country I love because I view the relations we have with the Middle East differently than you. I mean, if you are so macho and want to fight anyone who may have been left high and dry by the world order, colonialism, war (take your pick), why not start with our allies Saudi Arabia and Pakistan? The populations of those countries really do wish us harm. But not because of our "freedoms" (and that's in quotes not because those populations have freedoms, they basically don't, it's in quotes because it is what Bush said).
Peace through Strength. ????
Peace through War. ????
